Windows 10, Yay or Nay?

@Father Guido
I know what you are saying, and I have been thinking of picking up a used PC and putting Linux on it with a RAID setup, and dedicate it solely to network backups... for all of us...

Currently, I only keep one of the 2 TB drives online all the time.... I have several drives that are smaller and dedicated solely to keeping images of difference computers, and then they are powered down and taken offline.

so far, the only HDDs that have failed on me, have been in laptops.... 4 of those have happened to me.. One of them was the result of a fall to the floor.

I have had some old 5-1/4" drives start to give errors, after that they get replaced before they crash.

.

All our files from 4 Google accounts and 1 Dropbox are synced by CloudHQ to a master 1TB Google. Drive, That syncs to both home PCs on SSD drives for local storage. All changes are immediately synced everywhere. So we always have multiple real-time backups in multiple locations, all automatically.

My sympathies about your Internet connection, Google Fiber reàlly helps.

I can appreciate the continuity of what you have there Crash, as I often would like to access something from my Linux laptop.... I use the File Manager to go snooping onto my desktop PC (thru the network) to get the file if I need it bad enough...

usually though, the Linux box is only useful to me as a browser.... there just aren't any equivalent apps that will let me use my Windows applications and sync them up....

ie, Quicken to keep my checkbook.... 'gnucash' is a piece of trash IMO, as it will not automatically download from my bank, and it will not keep my Categories like I have them now... it wants to put every damn new item into a "special account" F' that.... I uninstalled it immediately.

MS Word, I have it set up to autocorrect for all of my dyslexic finger typing, I like the way it formats.....
I don't like the free alternate editors, I have tried them all, and I go back to MS Word every time.

MS has got a lock on the 'office world' and everyone knows it.... their stuff just works better than the rest.

Well, we covered Linux, GnuCash, etc before. What works excellent for me doesn't for you and that's OK.

This time was about how I don't consider backups secure and complete unless there's at least 3 copies in separate locations. That's how I do it, automatically, no effort, works with Windows or Linux. Extreme reliability near zero maintenance.,

You can still update your win7 for security patches. Just set "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them”. Review/research each and every one before taking it. This (in combination with the GWX Control panel) should stop the invasion.
My intentions exactly, Lmao

Had to uninstall GWX Control Panel, which was supposed to keep Win10 from replacing Win7/8. It hasn't been updated since January and our old pal KB3035583 just popped up... GWX didn't even see it.

Funny, last July I was thrilled to get Win10. Now I'm determined to get rid of it, but resistance is (almost) futile.
I just logged into my main pc Win7 partition and 3035583 was waiting for me to download & install. Didn't have GWX running, so I dunno if it would have caught it, so I just killed the b*ch. They want EVERYONE on Win10, even if the copy isn't *Genuine*. They just won't give up!

I just looked at that myself, and I also found it again for the 3rd time now, even with GWX running...
they are getting around it...

but at least, when we run GWX, it finds it and throws it in the bin.

GWX found the "Upgrade to Win10" switch turned back ON again.... grrrrr!!!!

fixed it again, and now it is rebooting, to clear it all out.

I did the register patch, so maybe ( fingers twisted ) it won't come back?

I left GWX up, at least it shows you in the Control Panel if the Win10 components exist.
and when I clicked on delete, it said they went away.

but, when I brought up Windows update, 3035583 is still hanging in there, although the check box is blank so it didn't install....

at least the Registry patch is installed.... and I have Check updates, but do not download set.

This last little bit, I am thinking that MS is going to try and delete so that even in Win7 we don't have an option to stop Win10....

that means, that tonight, when I go to bed, a new Image Clone is going onto my backup server.

After one of my Win10 installs in a separate partition, when I went back to Win7, every trace of GWX had disaappeared... Mr. Bill is up to something.

You Need To Stop KB 3035583 From Installing Again

Updates that have been hidden can appear again if a new version of the same update is released. That’s the case with KB 3035583; not only has it received an update (thus unhiding it), it’s status as an ‘Optional’ update has been changed to ‘Important’. If, after hiding this update on your system you decided to let Windows automatically install Important updates from Microsoft, it is likely the update has been installed on your system (again).

...it's like binary herpes!

When I checked yesterday it still showed up as "Optional".

Mine was too, I just didn't say so. I looked again after telling GWX Control Panel to get rid of it, but it was still in the optional box afterwards. so I left it there, unchecked of course.

here is an article describing KB3035583

here is an older one talking about and led to the link above.

There are other "Optional" updates that are described as being related to "update compatibility" and similar nonsense. I hide those too, no point in letting those install either.

to MS, everything is 'recommended' and has no relation to how useful it might be.

I hate that one blanket statement they make, it is never changed, and it gives zero info as to what that patch is for.

This might sound like foolishness, but instead of fighting a futile, endless battle to stay on Win7, If you want long term stabilty and support why not install CentOS? There's direct Linux replacements for most things any must-have Win software should easily run under Wine or in a VM.

You a free, enterprise OS with supporf through 2023 and security patches through 2026. And you can choose what and when you get upgraded.

Crash,

I installed Wine, and then I tried to install Quicken and also MS Office, and both of them just stopped.
never finished up the install, so that is where it quit for me....

My laptop w/Linux is just a browser, works great, and that is good enough.... anything important is done on my desktop Win7

I like the way it will shut down in 5 seconds flat. bootup is something like 45 seconds.
firefox looks/works just like it does every where else...
