Windows 10, Yay or Nay?

Turns out the witch is NOT dead...

Microsoft has a new way of trying to get Windows 10 onto your computer, whether you want it or not.

Users of Windows 7 and 8.1 have become familiar with -- jaded by, even -- the insistent, seemingly daily popups urging them to "Get Windows 10." Those messages have started taking a more aggressive turn.

Instead of simply giving you the option to install its latest operating system (or not), Microsoft now automatically schedules a date and time to update your PC to Windows 10. If you don't want the software update or if you want to change the installation date, you have to take deliberate action: manually click a link in the message, then choose to reschedule it or cancel it altogether.

Well that sucks.
Another good reason to keep automatic updates turned off and do them manually (and check them first).
What happens if you have an HTPC running Win7 Media Center, and wake up one day to find out that MS has been nice enough to "upgrade" it to 10 which no longer offers MC even as a paid option?

yeah, I have my win7 look at updates, but not download them.

I also have Never10 running...
and GWXcontrol panel running....

so far, all is well..... WinFart10 is not for me...

My view of Windows10 on my new Asus ROG: [emoji88] I hate it I hate it I hate it. Thankfully tho, Asus has an audio & a video program to supplement the both new & lamely deprecated Windows OS. It's functional but I hate it.. Lmfao! Ate my hotspot data up until I went thru a crapload of "Google, find & fix". Thank goodness for dualboot. [emoji41] Beating the stuff down with Linux Mint Cinnamon instead & loving it!

thanks for those links, I always add to my knowledge base, and that is useful.

so far, I just have my old Gateway desktop PC on Win7+Never 10

and my little thin film asus laptop on Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.3 and so far, it makes for a pretty good browser. I don't do anything else with it, just boot it up and open Firefox and that's it folks!!!

I'm jealous of that ROG-ASUS as that is what I used to have, before my crappy son-in-law busted it for me.

Yep, started disabling the live tiles yesterday. Haha. If I could only find Win7 drivers for this thing..

I'm sure that the drivers can be found. Not necessarily from the manufacturer, but they can be found. Should you need some pointers, just holler and I'll post my methods. Usually the vendor who makes the hardware has the latest/greatest anyway.

Definitely.. All info is appreciated. Ty-!

This came with 10.. I wanna DOWNGRADE to 7 but can't find drivers for this laptop under 8.1..

Drivers will probably not be an issue as much as being able to set your bios to boot in legacy (CSM) mode. Win8 and above rely on UEFI boot in that your license gets embedded into that boot environment. To install Windows 7, you need to dig around in the bios settings to figure out how to boot in csm mode (aka mbr). It's almost surely there, but you'll need to dig around to enable it (disable UEFI). Note that if you change it, your current Win 10 won't boot. THIS WILL BE THE BIGGEST (and most confusing) hurdle. With that in mind, grab a copy of Macrium Reflect Free to image your current setup to an external storage.

Note all of your current bios settings, write them ALL down and/or take pictures with your phone so you know what you have to reverse if needed.

Set up to boot in legacy mode and install Windows 7. When you get to "unknown hardware" in device manager after the install, you can dig for the hardware (vendor id strings) and search for drivers with that information.

I'll expound later with more details, but I just wanted to emphasize the differences between the boot processes. You will need legacy mode for Win7 (and most Linux distros for that matter). Until I can elaborate, dig through your bios options/settings and record them.

Google around a bit to help grasp what my tired arse is trying to communicate  We can make it work unless the manufacturer crippled the bios. I believe that they are obligated to provide this option in accordance with the UEFI rules for implementation.

I'll be back as soon as time permits. Good night all...

I was under the impression that Windows 7 was UEFI compatible...
You are correct (my bad). As long as it's the x64 version (x86 isn't supported) it will install on UEFI. Only necessary if your boot drive HAS to be partitioned as GPT vs MBR (>3TB). There are some minor benefits to using UEFI, but for the most part using MBR will be easier to install Win7 on devices that weren't shipped with (or supported by) it.

There's a setting in my UEFI that'll allow older BIOS boot as well
Great, as this will make dual booting easier. Running late for work and will get back to you...

I get 30 days to try it on. Update was free with new laptop. Took 3 hours to install. No problems yet. And I can see the windows-old file just in case.

You better rename the extension on that Windows Old directory to prevent Win10 from just suddenly deciding to delete it.... you can always rename it back like it was if you want to go back to Win7

There's a little job for someone this morning.

Did you spot the Windows 10 update notification icon? And Never 10 is the tool to fix it. This PC just cannot run 10, no way! So we have to drop the house on the Wicked Witch of Microsoft.
