Windows 10, Yay or Nay?

I have one in my kitbag.. its just a pain to remember to install the drivers when I pick up a different laptop

Yep fortunately I'm always using my own personal laptop so once it's installed it's good.
Iv'e got all kinds of cables and adapters that I have to carry around for the wide assortment of stuff I work with, of course thanks to Murphy I often find myself without the particular one I need-

ha ha ha, I do know that one....

I recently took a little 10 day vacation to Lake Texhoma, and just grabbed up my ditty bag and went.

uh, where is that extra USB charger? I need to recharge my BT at the same time that I recharge the cellphone :(
so, I looked for a simple spare USB to mini-usb cable... uh, no... that is gone also.

I hate it when I rob my ditty bag for something and say "gotta get this back in there" asap.

The power supply I keep in the laptop bag has a USB port for charging the phone so that's always covered.
I also keep an OEM Sammy charger and a (retractable) micro-USB cable in my pocket, just in case.

To restore the most glaring omission from Windows Ten:

Windows 7 games for Windows 10

I've only tried Minesweeper, but it works just like the original.

I still miss my Windows 95 Hover!

And where's my beloved Space Cadet pinball game?

@Father Guido .. Why should we disable Cortana, by chance? I'm very ignorant of Win10's sneaky chit at the moment..

I suppose that in one word it's "tracking" your every move. They've already disabled every hack to use anything other than Windows owned search options in it. Telemetry is already baked into the OS (since Win8) and is bad enough. I also killed off One Drive for similar reasons. Not to mention OD, breaks my favorite file manager Explorer ++. Works fine now that it's gone. :D

I'm still contemplating whether to upgrade my windows 7 to windows 10. Trying to figure out if its really a "yay" or a "nay"? Its because I'm been hearing for some failures of the upgrades. According to a computer technician who repaired my daughter's laptop, it would really depend if your laptop or computer is compatible with it. Others believe that it is more applicable to a touchscreen laptops. I'm not sure about that, but I'll rather stick to my windows 7 as for the moment.

Good idea.. Really. I would have as well but I needed a better PC and the specs I was trying for didn't coexist with Win7 and I detest the BS Win8+ threw at everyone so I opted to try Win10. Really not impressed with this forced shift of OS's or Microsoft's lack of any real improvement beyond a heavier lock on the system. If the Software was so great, they wouldn't have to force down everyone's throat like the POTUS did with ObamaCare. In fact, I wouldn't be offended if MS left the US and focused their time successfully forcing the software to work with other software before coming back to aggravate us. It's virtually useless to Android development anyways and it's looking like Android Development is gonna make up to 75% of daily PC use within the next few years. The OS has become so redundant, it now apparently uses some Linux scripts for better reliability..??

OD.. Like a Google drive/cloud??

Yes, but integrated into the OS with 5gb (was initially 15) of free storage. I did make an account with the purchase of a portable drive that gave me 200gb free for 2 years, but I used phony info and removed the pos as soon as I got it activated. I can access it from a browser and use it to share things with others that I wouldn't otherwise <g>.

Ding dong, the witch is dead...

Microsoft is removing its nagging Windows 10 upgrade notifications soon

Microsoft's Windows 10 upgrade prompts will become a thing of the past soon. The software giant is planning to remove its Get Windows 10 app from Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 PCs after July 29th. Microsoft confirmed yesterday that the company is planning to end its free Windows 10 upgrade offer on July 29th, and in a statement to WinBeta it has revealed the annoying upgrade notification will be disabled after July 29th:

"Details are still being finalized, but on July 29th the Get Windows 10 app that facilitates the easy upgrade to Windows 10 will be disabled and eventually removed from PCs worldwide. Just as it took time to ramp up and roll out the Get Windows 10 app, it will take time to ramp it down."

For Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users who have resisted the move to Windows 10 it means the upgrade prompts will disappear. Third-party apps have allowed many to disable the notifications, and system administrators can kill the process for business machines. A giant Windows 10 upgrade prompt appeared during a weather forecast last week, providing some unusual comedy.

Well, all that says is, the fun and games part is over....

if you end up with Win10 and don't want it, tough, you are screwed after July 29th.

unless, you format and reload Win7 from an image, or install DVDs.

I have W7HP on one partition and 10H on another. I use W7 about 99.99% of the time, 10 is just out of curiosity. Wonder how MS will handle this setup...

Get Windows 10 for Free After July 29th, with a Little Prep Now

When you upgrade to Windows 10 from a PC running a genuine and activated Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 operating system, your PC receives a “digital entitlement.” Basically, Microsoft notes on its servers that your particular PC’s hardware is eligible for Windows 10 going forward.

Once your PC is eligible, it’s always eligible–you can reinstall Windows 10 from scratch and it’ll automatically activate, without you even entering a product key. You can even install a different operating system–like Windows 7 or Linux–and reinstall Windows 10 later, fully activated and genuine.

LOL, one of my friends was fighting with his laptop this weekend: he was trying to get 3D to work on it, but the drivers would not work.

So he found a set of drivers that would get the job done, but then things would go to hell.

He killed internet access, and got the 3D to work, but then as soon as he plugged back in, Windows 10 would 'update' the drivers and break it.

That ASUS laptop had come with Win10 (of course) and no product key or installation software.. So I had to pay $120 for Win10 installation USB/product Key. As @jefboyardee mentioned before, I didn't need to use the new product key since the PC recognized whatever to instill to correct key. So to dualboot Win10 & Linux I had to install Linux 1st, then install Widows 10, reboot back to Linux & update grub.. Done!! [emoji41] This thing is bangin'! Now I just wish I understood why the drivers are so weird.. Like, some won't install without others being installed first (but no idea which is which). Asus also give out a .rar file (fortunately just one file) for a driver but Windows10 doesn't seem to natively support unpacking rar's.. Wtf?! [emoji12]

Edit: BTW, PdaNet+ will not install.. Win10 makes it error out and immediately remove it. Tried a few more times and got a full installation but once again Win10 put the Lock down and immediately uninstalled. Any ideas? [emoji28]

$120 for Windows 10, wow! Can you get your money back?
RIGHT?!.. They should pay ME for forcing me to use the garbage!! Can't find a CD ROM installation anymore, it's all USB 3.0! Only using the Windows for rare occasions. Would have done Win7 but apparently the drivers disappeared from the Mfgr site after MS went all forceful on everyone. At least supply a reinstallation DVD/USB with the new keyless PC's..

Pretty busy of late, but shoot me a PM. I am doing my best to become totally Linux, but there are certain situations where you need winders. Many workarounds abound ...

Hippo is also handy for updating existing installed software.

And for keeping drivers current:

SlimDrivers - Free
Crowd-sourcing to spider and aggregate millions of devices.

SlimDrivers not only detects when a driver needs updating, but also identifies the proper executable for your system and initiates the driver install automatically. - Note: Individual Driver updates are free. The Plus version called DriverUpdate allows for "Download All" and advanced automation functionality.
