Root Wireless Tether in Infrastructure Mode

I was having a conflict somewhere because the beta version kept crashing . I said what the heck and did a complete wipe , reinstalled just this app (wifi_tether_v3_1-beta2.apk - android-wifi-tether - WiFi Tether for Root Users 3.1-beta2 *** BETA *** - Wireless Tether for Root Users - Google Project Hosting ) as my WiFi and NO MORE PROBLEMS ! As matter of fact , I noticed that my web pages were loading faster on my PC so I did a speed test and I got 5 readings above 0.85 Mbps with the highest being 0.96 Mbps . This was with the stock proxy settings too . :D Come on Sprint , we know the speed is there sooooo why don't ya let us have it ??????? :p

Are u saying i need to freeze or uninstall the default wifi app? Cuz mine is force closing when i try to start it.:(

you can use mac addy filtering with this, saves finding a way to make encryption work.
if the mac addy is not on file the connection gets rejected so no one else can use it.

I'm not worried about other people using the connection so much as I am allowing my data to be viewed from external sources.

I've been playing with getting infrastructure mode working on my prevail since I saw this thread. Nothing but woes as I've mentioned previously on the thread. But yesterday I got it working. So I figured I'd tell my story in the hopes that it'd help someone.

I tried the beta1 and the beta2. Neither of them worked. I'd get one of them to work as ad-hoc but not in infrasurcture mode. So after playing with it for a few days I gave up and kept on using Wireless Tether for Root Users from the market. Well after finding my chinese tablet doesn't like ad-hoc I started messing with things for another round.

This time I thought I'd follow wetbiker7's advice and keep both versions of tether installed on my phone. I had the one from market and the beta2 one.

The infrastructure mode still didn't work. :( On thinking things over again I enabled encryption (wpa2) and set a password and things started working. My laptop can see and connect to the network and so can my tablet.

I haven't uninstalled the market version of tether but that's something I'll try later when I have time again.

I installed this version :

wifi_tether_v3_1-beta2.apk - android-wifi-tether - WiFi Tether for Root Users 3.1-beta2 *** BETA *** - Wireless Tether for Root Users - Google Project Hosting

make sure you change the device profile to :
Samsung Galaxy Indulge

set-up method :
Softap for Samsung (master)

Only problem I'm having is it only works once . When I shut it off and turn it back on , it will only broadcast an ad-hoc . I restart the phone and it works again . To remedy this , I use Barnacle when I don't need a true WiFi signal . :D

Edit : changed to Galaxy Indulge . Thx optimus !

Thanks optimus ! I have it set on Galaxy Indulge (lol) , I just typed the wrong model . Sorry about that people . Man ! it's hell getting old . :D

I still am only able to run it once , then have to reboot the phone to run it again . Wonder why ? Is anyone else having this issue ????

EDIT : might try going back with Beta 1

I too am having this problem. All I can tell right now is that beta2 is locking up the Prevails wifi.

Are you able to disable your Prevails wifi connection AFTER using beta2? I am not and am forced to reboot in order to use my personal wifi or to tether again.

I can disable it but it takes a minute . The only problem is ..... when I turn it back on , it will only act as an ad-hoc . I have to reboot in order to get true wifi .

Hi again.

I have gotten WiFi to work and I have ironed out some bugs, even if I have no plans to tether now I want it ready for when needed.

It seems like usb tethering could be a good alternative:

1. battery life
2. increased security

After much searching I have not seen any postings about usb tethering, am I missing a thread?

I purchased Klink for my hard tethering before I rooted my phone . It works great sep 4 slower speeds . Dunno why , it just does . You would think a hard tether would produce faster speeds .

PDAnet is a free USB tether that works great. They do charge $15 to include the ability to view secured https: sites. Good app.

Hmm does USB Tether work when the PC doesn't have a wireless card? If it does then I can use this for working on pcs that don't have a working wireless that card or when I am working on a desktop and need internet and the people don't have it. Just one more thing to add to my arsenal of tools for working on pcs.

Yes , Klink will work . I've used it on my desktop . :D

EDIT: You need to install it on the desktop . You can do this via your phone .

I used the beta2 version to connect my laptop to the internet successfully in infrastructure mode.

But that gave me some problems. First. I'd be unable to connect to the network a second time. My laptop would see the network but just couldn't connect to it anymore. Second. My phone would be able to see my office network but would be unable to connect to it. For some reason it'd try connecting and then get disconnected and try again. Just kept looping.

The way the problems were solved is while wireless tether was running (meaning I wouldn't tap again to turn it off) I'd go into my settings and turn on my wifi connection. This would make wifi tether throw an error message. Something along the lines of "What the hell. Your phone takes back control over the ...." Making it force shut down.

But after that my phone would connect to wireless networks. And my laptop would connect to my phone's infrastructure mode wireless network for tethering the second time without the need for me to reboot my phone.

Hope this helps someone. Good luck.

Thanks wetbiker7 and wyelkins.

I will give both products a test and see how it goes.

That 3.99 price is awful nice .... but testing both is always best.

The trial version of Klink will only let you view non secured sites . If you do purchase it , you will be able to visit secured sites and such . Just make sure that you read the instructions and follow them to a T . I've been using my wireless tether but it's nice to know I've got the option if my wireless goes out or I'm on a PC w/o a wireless card . So far , Klink is the cheapest I've found . Post back and let us know what you think . :)

EDIT: If it's $3.99 then it's gone up . If I'm not mistaken , I purchased it for $3.27 .

yea mine is doing that as well

[Shortened as to not use up so much space...]

You'll want to keep your phone awake during use or else you will lose the connection (I haven't figured out anyway to get past this) so you'll want to find a "stay awake" app such as "Stay Awake Widget"

Happy Infrastructure mode tethering :D

First off I would like to say thank you for pointing out, what so far seems to be, a great app. From what little testing I have done, it certainly works fairly well. (I couldn't test for long as I have things which need to be on my home network.)

Moving on...
It is my understanding that Android usually goes to "sleep" on screen-off. As I'm not 100% if my phone really did go to sleep, or if I have something keeping it awake while the screen is off (I have at the very least not installed anything to do so.), this may or may not help. Along with this, I'm obviously not aware if you already know of this setting.
While exploring a few days ago, I came across an Advanced Wi-Fi Settings menu which is not so obviously placed. While in Wi-Fi Settings, pressing the Menu Key brings up two buttons: "Scan" and "Advanced". In the Advanced Settings menu there is the "Wi-Fi sleep policy" which is used to determine when, if ever, to switch back to 3G from Wi-Fi on sleep. The default option is "When screen turns off" which I suspect could be why you need the Stay-Awake app.
I only had a short time to test before needing to get back on my home network; therefore I only tested it while the Sleep Policy was set to Never, and did not lose connection on screen off, or anytime during the 6-10 minutes the screen was off.
I hope this helps, and you no longer require an app to keep the phone awake to use the tethering.

Are you able to disable your Prevails wifi connection AFTER using beta2? I am not and am forced to reboot in order to use my personal wifi or to tether again.

I currently have tried Version 3.1 Beta 2 and Beta 3(Released a few hours ago) and ran into the same problem, occurring in both Beta 2 and Beta 3. However, unless it was a lot of flukes, disabling "WiFi-driver reload" fixes this issue. (Side Note to back up this as a fix: It is noted on the Project's page that this feature only became default behavior as of Beta 2, which is when this problem started.)

Happy tethering!

That is a few good ideas I have my wifi sleep policy set on never, have for as long as I have had android, and I never rand into that problem either that could be the reason.

Interesting note about the beta 2, and 3. I have just keep to the beta1 with that information maybe I will upgrade it and test it.

You sir, are amazing, sir.... And I love you.

*Edit*
Just read the post more thoroughly and found the info on having to reboot to be able to re-enable. I was just turning on my WiFi to force the tether to break, which remedied the problem, will try disabling "Wi-Fi driver reload" as the post states :P
