Root Worse battery life with underclock

volpe1988

Newbie
Hey all,

I have noticed that when underclocking on Rainy Day 1.0 ROM and ChopSuey 9.2.7 Kernel that my battery life is worse.

Can somebody explain the options such as the 'scaling' options?

I'm running it at 422Mhz with the screen on scaling on demand and 245Mhz with the screen off scaling powersaver

It's been one hour and the battery is at 74%...

Any suggestions?

Maybe switch to interactive X if that doesn't fix it?

Theres no way your battery life should be worse with it set at 422, thats really low.

really? i usually underclock to 245. but yes try interactive x governor. it has a screen off profile already that should help. give it a few more days then move on to the next kernel. always give it a few days for the kernel to settle in before deciding to move on to the next kernel. every kernel will react differently on different phones.

Roger that ill let it settle. And see how it goes as well as run some benchmarks on stock speed and underclocked in terns of battery longevity.

on a side note, can i install a new kernel over my current rom or do i need to reinstall everything?

yes you can. the new kernel will just replace the old kernel so flash away. just make sure that you are flashing the correct kernel for your rom.

and forgive me of my manners but:
welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And make sure you wipe cache and dalvik cache prior to flashing a new kernel.

And on the 422 underclocking, when Rxpert said it was low, he said that because he has 422 as his max, which IMHO is pretty low for a max setting.

Thanks for clearing that up mizz, that is indeed what I meant.

Also, was that 1 hour of not doing anytting or 1 hour of playing a game?

Thank you ocnbrze for the welcome! and when you say switch to interactive x I assume you are talking about the scaling setting?

As an FYI I'm using Antutu CPU Master. I tried set CPU but it didnt seem to work well for me.

Also, was that 1 hour of not doing anytting or 1 hour of playing a game?

That was one hour of light texting and very light internet browsing via 3g. Normally (pre-root/Flash) I would unplug my phone around 8AM and use it for heavy texting, some gaming, and moderate internet and it would be at around 30% by 2pm. After my root and flash, three days ago, I managed about roughly the same. Now using CPU Master I'll unplug it and it will be at 30 percent by noon with the same use, which is the complete opposite of what I expected.

Forgot to ask, what am I looking for to make sure I can use a kernel with a ROM, I checked the Rainy Day 1.0 forum on the XDA forum, but there doesn't appear to be any information on that.

I haven't used that rom, but it shows up on our Roms and Kernels sticky as a sense rom.

So a sense kernel would seem to be indicated. They are listed as Gingerbread kernels.

The freedom kernels are popular, but then there is the Golden Money and ChopSuey ones, as well.

I've never heard of CPU master.

What do you mean SetCPU wasn't working for you? Can you expand a bit on that?

Have you read the guide on SetCPU?

I just got done reading the guide as a matter of fact!

I just realized I was using v 1.5 of set cpu, which could explain my difficulties  Just got v 2.2.4. The older version wouldn't allow me to set my freq higher then 544Mhz.

2.2.4 seems to be working (widget shows me as overclocked when charging, which is what it is set to do.) I'll have to wait until I'm done charging to see how the battery lasts, but I will post an update.

Also my phone doesn't seem to respond well to overclocking past 1.152ghz, set cpu widget shows the last cpu before setting freq to max, and the phone seems overall sluggish. At 1.152ghz all seems well and snappy.

Every phone has its limits.

I overclock to 1113 MHz as my max and 125 as my min. Other than that I would set a screen off profile to around 422 max 128 min.

You should be good to go after that. Just make sure to play around with it a bit and make sure the phones working well before hitting set on boot.

Overclocking too high can send you into a bootloop, underclocking too low will cause the phone to be really slow.

My setup is as follows:

Min: 245, Max: 1152

Screen off profile, min: 245 max: 245

Does the kernel you're running have a conservative governor?

As far as I know it does. The profiles I set have worked.

This has definitely extended my battery life, I went from 10am with a full charge to 8pm to 15%. Normally by 2pm its at 30% so I plug it in. This is with my normal use and it's even overclocked some of the time. The screen off setting is the biggest player I think.

Screen off is usually the only one I have and if I have a kernel with smartass or interactivex governor, I don't need to do that. I just have to set up the max and min settings and let it go.

Glad you made some progress!

Performance varies from person to person, but at 10 hours you should have more than 20% of your battery life left. I've been on 12+ hours with 75% battery left before (not a usual occurrence, but just to show you the potential)

Get rid of all the extra profiles and try either aggressive or more freedom kernels

Also, as far as remaining on topic of the thread....

I achieved AMAZING battery life with this today.

I was showing 13 hours on battery during normal use (GPS, WIFI radios on, bad signal in basement classrooms) and was still showing 75% battery life. I ran a battery calibration yesterday.

Current setup:

MikG2.57
Aggressive Freedom Kernel
Stock battery
Old superuser
V6 supercharger
Newest radio
PRI 1.77
PRL version 60681
SetCPU set to 1113max 125 Min with screen off profile set to 422 max and in call profile set to 729 max.

I wish I could have rode it out and see where it ended up, but the girlfriend played a lot of angry birds and now the battery is at 51% at 16 hours :(

If we extrapolate the 75% at 13 hours though thats 52 hours at 0%

12+ hours sounds amazing. I flashed the aggressive freedom kernel this morning so ill let that sit for a few days and see where it leaves me. I also got rid of some of the profiles.. guess i went a little crazy :D

as of now my profiles are:
Main- 128mhz-1228mhz
Battery<50%-128mhz-844mhz
Battery<20%-128mhz-422mhz
Screen off-128mhz-245mhz

And thank you to everyone that has been helping me!!!!

With the freedom line try out the smartass scaling if you haven't already changed it

I would recommend using the interactiveX governor, imo;) Then there won't be any need for screen on/screen off profiles. Let the governor do the work

I used this 'smartass' for a little while and my phone just seemed kindof laggy and I got a couple of force closes. One was with the phone part and it kept coming back in an endless loop to the point where I had to pull the battery. I'm using ondemand right now and everything seems to be working pretty well. Not the greatest battery life, still can't make it through a whole day, but I can get pretty close.

I'm hoping that I just have to let the kernel get used to the phone? (I still don't get why it has to settle )

how much are you underclocking your phone? you might want to adjust your setting for underclocking. i can got to 128 but for some that just creates lag as the phone wakes up.

128mhz. mine lags a little when it wakes up too but it goes away quickly as the processor speeds up.. What's the point of underclocking if I cant drop it way low and get max batterty

You CAN drop it way low and get max battery.

......BUT your going to have to deal with the consequences of having a cap on your speed. Think of it as having your car max out at 40 MPH. Your MPG would be great, but on the highway you just wouldn't cut it

yeah for some you will get lag at that setting. try 245 and you should still have pretty good battery life.
