Would DHD owners still recommend?

I found my problem with phone, read it on xda website. If you go to Settings/Applications/Development and turn on USB Debug, the phone is very smooth now. Loads picture gallerys within blink of an eye and browsing websites / texting are all silky smooth :) Has transformed my HD Desire.

Cheers

Read from a thread around here that this USB thing is a Froyo issue. Google should come out with a perm fix soon.

Have mine a little over a week now. I haven't had any of the problems others have had. No lag, no cover gap issues, great speaker. Hands down for me the best phone ever. Coming from a Nexus One it is a huge upgrade. Quality is the best. I get a full day and a half out of the battery with some good use. I would recommend it to anyone. I love it! Can you tell?

I would still recommend this phone to those who can charge it while at work.
I have been a HTC Hero user for the last 17 months. This is a nice step up with a larger screen.
Also seen that it may be possible to get a better battery from Mugen. Which will be a big plus if so.
Not had any lagging issues as said by some. I love the way you can just turn it over to run it on speaker, for a call.
It seems that things are bound to go wrong with all new phones. As it is cheaper to get the public to test them and fix later, rather that pay for a whole bunch of testers.

After a week and a bit I would still recommend this, though it's my first smartphone so I don't really have a benchmark. There are a couple of things I find problematic but I think it's stuff I'll get used to. For instance, to begin I kept pressing the edges of the screen because of the way I was holding it - as the screen is only a couple of millimetres from the casing edge - but over time I naturally changed the way I hold the phone and I've pretty much stopped doing this now. When I say "naturally" I mean it's not something I had to consciously do, so I wouldn't count "getting used to it" in this sense the same as "putting up with it".

One thing that does bother me is the speaker being so quiet. I don't spend any time using my phone for music (I have an iPod for that) but I did try to show a mate of mine a youtube video the other day (this one if anyone's interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78OXhiN7-ms) and we could barely hear it. There was about 10 people sitting about chatting after work, so it wasn't particularly loud. Another mate leant over and made a comment about that being "another reason not to buy Android", in exactly the same way I do when I'm taking the piss out of Macboys and their iPhones, and I felt a little bit ashamed of myself :(

On that note, does anyone know who to talk to about getting apps made? I have an idea for a workaround for this issue, but I'm not a programmist so I can't really do it myself.

Hello all!
I got my DHD yesterday and I absolutely love it!
It runs everything silky smooth and as for the battery life I have to wait a week or so before jumping to conclusions...
My only gripe until now is the same as Styxx's. The ringer volume seems to be so low when I have an incoming call or listening to music...
Have already tried the "resetting to zero and then turning the volume back up again" but to no avail..
Other than that the phone is just SICK! :)

Same here :D I really enjoy it...

I had mine for like a month now.. and even tho is a great device and the screen is absolutly gorgeous i cant recommend it.. the battery is a deal breaker, whats the point of having one helluva phone if it is going to last you 3-5 hours of use ? ( note how i said ''use'' it can be on idle much more than that but if you use it around 3-5 hours i ll die on you)

Sorry boy but dont get this phone, look for another one with better battery life

See, I just fail to beleive that this phone can run for a day and a half without a charge through normal use. What are you doing to prevent yourself from having to charge it every 6 hours like I have to?

I have had my desire HD now for about a week. Went to the gym today and listened to two hours of music over bluetooth headphones. 50% of battery gone. I have to charge this phone regularly as I pop in and out of the car otherwise I will have to put my second battery in to get through an 8 hour day. Screen on 35% brightness.
After saying that this phone is a dream. It is so much better than my windows htc touch hd. It has to be a top contender for the best phone on the market at this time.
I have found third party apps for almost everything I thought I might miss out on, on android. Except for memory map, which may get ported anyway soon.

Well now that depends on your definition of "normal use". If you're making a long car journey every day and using it as a satnav, then yeah, the battery is going to die. Spending 2 hours on Angry Birds also isn't going to help. If you totally live on facebook or absolutely must be connected to your email at all times, then again you'll probably have issues, but then if facebook and email are really that important, maybe you should buy a computer instead. I've been using mine for calls and texts, calendar, and the occasional email when I'm not near a PC but know I have something specific to check on. To be fair, the only long conversation I've had so far I had when it was on charge anyway. I guess if you're really spending that much time on the phone, maybe you should look at something more low-tech. I don't think any smartphone is going to last all day if you're always in calls.

It all depends on what you have running, and how often you have things to sync. Screen brightness also is a big factor. I have mine set up for everything to sync every hour, and brightness at 70%. I use it daily with texts, emails, youtube, web browsing, music, and any other thing you can think of. When idle my CPU is at around 4.6%. From a full charge I can go a full day easy. If I cut my youtube viewing I can go almost two days before "needing" to charge. My battery should be conditioned by now since I have had my phone for just over two weeks, so I don't know if it will get any better. Oh, and I just want to say I didn't do anything out of the ordinary. I mean this phone is meant to be used as a smart "super" phone, so unlike a lot of people here say they disabled this, and disabled that, just to get better battery life, that is poop. Why buy this phone just to use it without all the functions on? I have mine set up with everything ON as it should be. Color me happy!

How come there is such a difference in battery performance with different people who use the same settings?
I've read other reviews here by people who didn't disable anything and the battery lasted for half a day.

I'm confused.

I'd say moderate use (of everything), & you won't get more than a day out of it, tops.

It's about the same as my iphone 3g was, so i've become accustomed to charging each night, & most definitely get a car charger.

But i can only talk for myself, as you've probably gathered by the big difference of opinion, really does depend what you're doing & how much, everybody's personal circumstances are different; i barely need cellular data, so i have that off most the time. I find this increases my battery life significantly.

Satnav/gps kills it, 3g kills it, they're the 2 biggest battery zappers in my opinion.

The good thing is, a battery is only

HTC Desire HD is awesome. I think its the best smartphone I've ever had. With its 4.3" screen, it has ushered me into the world of Android, and not once have I even considered picking up my old, abused IPhone 3GS. May not be fair comparison, but that's what I got. Desire HD runs every bit as smooth as the Iphone (although USB debug fix may be needed).

For me the thing I like the most is the 4.3" screen, while not as good as the retina or super AMOLED, the vast screen space makes browsing, typing, gaming, Youtube and doing all the other various activities much better experiences. As well in my man hands, 4.3" for me is the perfect size, and fits my pockets. I look at an IPhone 4 and while it looks great, sorry but after using the 4.3" screen there is no way I will go back to a 3.7". Just my humble opinoin. Plus I think the phone is gorgeous.

While many people may claim fail on the battery life, it is something I can live with and it doesn't deter me from recommending this phone. I got lousy battery life with my 3GS, and I don't see much of a marked difference for better or worse with my Desire HD. Its all in how you use it. I've reached up to 27 hours between charges with a mixture of browsing on 3G/Wi-fi (manually turn on off), voice calls, 15 minute Angry Birds sessions, sync for Facebook/HTC Sense/Exchange/Google. When all else fails, at least I have the option to put in another battery.

Yeah I'd recommend this phone; it's an absolute beast. I've had a few smartphones from Sony Ericsson to LG (anyone remember the SE p900?) to the Nokia E71 and the DHD beats them all into a cocked hat.

There hasn't been a single thing to disappoint me about this phone (apart from the annoyingly sensitive gyroscope/tilt sensor), in fact it's been excellent. It'll last all day and night with Green Power Premium active, which means I can use it as a phone and a netbook.

I've not put the DHD down since I got it.

If you're umming and ahhing over getting this, hesitate no more, you won't regret it.

Dan

I definitely recommend. I came from iPhone 3G and the Pros of this phone far outweigh the cons.

The size is perfect, but in my opinion the iPhone is too small. I also honestly don't see why people say this weighs too much, my girlfriend seems to think it does though.

I had doubts after hearing a lot of other peoples experiences coming from iOS, but Android is fantastic, I love it. Don't miss any iPhone apps that the Android doesn't have at all; that was my main worry.

The only downside to Android I find is it can be buggy, but I think thats HTC Sense and not Android.

Battery lasts all day, I charge it every night and I've never ran out of battery with moderate usage. Get used to charging it every night, I don't see why anyone would want/need it to last longer... in fact it would be interesting to know why people do feel they need 2 days+ worth out of a smartphone.

Everything I was worried about with getting this phone turned out to be an over reaction, it's an absolutely fantastic phone and I will never go back to iOS.

In all honesty, I can think of a couple of situations where this would be bad. The main one for me would be music festivals. However, I personally will be getting my C903 unlocked next time I go to one and putting my new SIM in that, as I don't really want to risk breaking or losing my DHD (or getting it stolen for that matter). And let's be fair, if you're using your smartphone for anything other than calls, texts and camera at a festival, you're not doing it right.

Gotta agree with most of the positives and minor negatives about the phone.

Owned mine for at least a week before I dare mention anything in this thread lol

there isnt much to add really, but yes there isnt the hi-res of the retina displays of the IPhone or sammy SAMOLEDs but the screen size certainly makes it worth it. I cant believe i managed to live with my 3.2" on my hero for so long! p.s. angry birds on the big screen is soooo amazing! :D

weight isnt an issue, lived with monsters such as the old Varios/TyTn's in the past and this just feels much sturdier and lighter.

camera is a great improvement esp with the double LED, omg i cant reiterate this more, being able to take snaps at night is a god-send (rememeber i had the HTC Hero lol). still, the camera isnt the greatest esp if the object is kinda moving...but an improvement non the less. cant thin kif its just the CMOS sensor or the cam software on the phone....

i dont miss the hard buttons. i used to think i'd miss the feel of the hard keys on my Hero but you know what? i dont anymore. fact.

earpiece to listen to calls is a lil quiet, whish i could increase the volume around 33-50% to help with loud places i.e. nightclubs.

i kinda like the SRS mode when listening via earphones, gives bassy songs a lil umpth thats needed - dead prez tune sonds fab :)

still get the random vibrate thingy, but think this is getting fixed in the next update - i think.

oh be sure to follow the showing your DHD off thread to customise your home screens, ive done alot to mine now and its now looking sleek and SWEEEEET!

DO NOT!!!! i mean DO NOT!!!! get the navigation premium thing from the car panel....it doesnt even search via post codes (UK)...i mean what modern SAT nav doesnt search via post codes?? stick to another evil, and go with co-pilot.

havent noticed wi-fi drains as much battery as much as it did on my hero actually...but using HSDPA alot really kills the battery, GPS seems to take a medium ammount of juice considering.

oh texting and typing on the DHD is such a relief...Hero was too cramped, with all this room, and i havent encountered any lag so far. i dont think i could ever go back (unless i had a hard keyboard - them i might think about dropping to a 3.7"-4.0").

basically, love my DHD :)

@ChOnG2k4: did you tried not using the Task Killer ? The symptoms you describe are like if you killed the app/service you actually need, and that results in delay because android must reload the app again and again and again, because your task killer keeps killing it.

Do not use task killer on Andriod 2.2. Froyo is design to keep this is memory, so by killing apps will just drain more and more memory.

How to increase your battery life:
  • Temp Root or Perm Root using VISIONary (i'm currently temp rooted with run on boot)
  • Install SetCPU and add 2 profiles:
    1. Screen Off - 245mhz max and min
    2. Battery < 20% - 245 min 768 max
  • Set Screen brightness to 20-25% - plenty bright enough for me
  • Don't use live wall papers and keep widgets to a minimum if any at all
  • Limit your syncing programs as much as possible
  • When using GPS, plug into a car charger.

VERY IMPORTANT: you have to train your battery to be better from day one. That means out of the box dont charge it. Let it run down and turn off. Do a full charge and let it run down and turn off again. Do the full charge and run down at least 5 times and you will get a healthy battery. Try not to charge your battery from halfway if possible. Batteries have life memory and half charging can affect the performance/life. You can reset battery life in the recovery mode menu (hold down menu while turning on, i think you need to install a recovery program to do recovery mode) but make sure the battery is absolutely full before doing so.

I also installed Battery Monitor (the one with the blue circle and lighting), it predicts how long your battery will last depending on previous usage, takes an hour or 2 to analyse first time. I generally get a day and a half to 2 days depending on usage. I Facebook alot and check my emails regularly all using wifi which is really low power consumption. If i play games for half an hour like angry birds or human anatomy then my battery will be a day and a half, if not playing games, it will be more like 48 hours.

I have advanced task killer on mine purely to kill the extra apps that i've installed at half hour intervals. It works fine and does not cause any problems.

Speed/lagging: turn on USB debugging as linked in above posts, this can also increase battery life with alot of people.

Processor: The DHD uses the MSM8255 whereas the Desire has the QSD8250. They may have the same clockspeed but the similarities change there. As written above the abilities of the new chip are far superior to the Desire. Also the technology is 25% smaller (45nm instead of 60nm) meaning the smallest part of the mainboard, the transistors, are 15nm smaller meaning less energy lost in the form of heat produced, meaning greater battery life. This is why the battery is small, along with keeping the phone as slim as possible.

I hope i've answered/summed up any queries posted. Sorry if i've stepped on anyone's toes in doing so.
