Would you disconnect the tech if you could?

If I don't have to work, then definitely, I can go zero tech.

But the biggest rpoblem I would have is, I dont own any watches anymore.

Haha :p I think there was a member here that was selling his watches collection in the classified forum.

Luckily I don't use tech as part of my job. So I use my tech purely for personal communication and recreation .I would never leave home without it.

I'm going to Costa Rica in early March (for anniversary) and I have no intention of taking any electronics with me besides a pre-paid phone so I can be in contact with the relatives that are watching my daughter.

Dude, I live in upstate ny. You will be lucky to have cell service in Cooperstown... Lol

Seriously, though, I went on vacation to Panama last January and brought only my iPod touch to connect to wifi when I had the off chance... It was nice being mostly off the grid so to speak. I used a pay phone to call home a couple times...

Ohhhhh yeah. Me and a buddy took a road trip upstate to Cooperstown last Summer to check out the Baseball HoF. I'm on Sprint and he's on Verizon, and neither of us had any solid signal while we were there. Likewise, we both used pay phones if we had to make any calls.

Lol! Really? I thought that at the very least VZW had service there....

People don't realize what a tiny town it really is, and that it's very sheltered.

I realized it when I looked up airfare. Closest airport is Albany which charges an arm and a leg. Or I could fly into Buffalo where they charge like two arms. I really want to go, but airfare is a killer. That's before you get molested by TSA and treated like a terrorist.

Fly to JFK. It's probably a 3 hr drive up and you'll save a TON of money. I always fly out of the city, and I live 40 minutes from Albany. You won't even lose much time as Albany is about an hour and 40 minutes from Cooperstown.

He had one or two bars depending on where we were. Most occasions he had nothing. Either way, the Baseball HoF was AWESOME!

The drive isn't 3 hours. It took us nearly 4 and a half to get there from where I live and JFK is 10-15 mins from my house lol.

Quick search shows that JFK saves me $150 on airfare. I know things cost more in NYC though so I'm not sure if I'd save money once I factor in a rental car, lodging, etc.... It does save me on airfare though. It's $500 to fly to Albany or Buffalo and $350 at JFK. After running all the numbers I'm debating whether I can justify spending $350 on airfare though. Still pretty steep price to pay to be sexually harassed/assaulted and bullied for a couple of hours. I'm a baseball nut, but I'm also a cheapskate and I hate the TSA with a passion. So I'm torn.

Check Newburgh airport. It's a little known international airport halfway between NY and Albany. Maybe you would get lucky? I know there are cheap flights there.

@Hitman... Didn't realize Cooperstown was that far from the city. I can make it from Albany in around 3 hrs to JFK. What way did you drive up?

We took the 87 all the way up north then headed west on the 23 by Catskill.

Well, i should buy one, then go advise him to keep them, not sell them!

Yeah, being to connected in work sucks.
It follows you every where, and you can't get away from it.

I have very few friends, so if it weren't for work, I wouldn't need my tech gear at all and would miss absolutely nothing.

When we moved I spent 10 months without an internet connection. No service from any provider in the area and zero 3g/4g service in the area. It was pretty horrible. While I don't mind spending a day or two off line doing it for months and months is no fun at all. Especially when it is not by choice.

Thanks for the tip. Flights there are $400 so it's less than Albany and more than NYC. Might be worth it to not have to hassle with the city though. At those airfare prices I'll probably put off the trip for a while. I need to get under $300 for me to even consider it. The cheapskate in me screams for mercy when I see those prices.

I'm trying to plan my vacation this year and am still debating about where to go. Where ever I end up going, I was considering leaving all the tech behind. No smart phone, no tablet, no laptop, nothing. Get a dumb phone. Put my service on there and go. But then part of me thinks being disconnected for several days would drive me nutty. I don't think I could do it. Could you turn off all the tech for a few days? Would you want to?
Depends on where I'm going and what I'm doing.

I hear ya. Just trying to help. Airfare has gotten ridiculous.

By choice, no I would not.

I could give up my laptops my iPad and one of my phones, but I wouldn't leave my other phone behind. Even if I didn't use it for keeping in contact or getting on the web, I would still want it to buy tickets, check my bank account, take pictures, etc.

Now if the unthinkable happened and "the grid" went down, I could adjust and be ok. I just wouldn't do it voluntarily.

No way dude!

if i was going to a city, i'd want my smartphone for the gps, and possibly checking local events online - if i was going camping or some such, i'd go for a dumbphone for the extra battery life (and likely keep it turned off until an emergency anyway) and disposability (is that a word?) in case i lost/broke it

Makes you wonder how we used to survive without a phone.

Doesn't take long though to not miss something though.

You don't need a smartphone to be prepared for an emergency, a plain old flip phone will work too. Angry Birds and iMDB won't be much help!

Depends on the nature of the emergency. If I wanted to call the police, yes a dumb phone can do that just as well.

But are you denying a smart phone could be more use than a dumb phone in other emergency situations?

Even if I wanted / needed a taxi to get me out of a spot, My Smart phone does this much better. Wait? I need to navigate, Smart phone... You see where I am coming from?

Angry birds and IMDB would not be much help, agreed but there are other things that could be...

Facetious.

I appreciate the help. The cheapskate in me screams for mercy when I look at airfares though.

I just paid a little over 2 grand for my vacation in March. lol

I don't think I've ever paid that much for a vacation and I've got the money to do so. I'm just to cheap. I will likely end up just staying in town and my company will email me/call me with problems that I'll end up fixing even though I'm technically on vacation.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Don't do that :( You EARNED your vacation!!!! Use it!!!

I've been told that many, many times before. I'm a pretty hardcore workaholic. Work can be as unhealthy to me as alcohol can be to an alcoholic. When I left my last job I had over a month and a half of vacation saved up and had at least 6 months or so of sick time. With email and everything I can work when I'm not in the office so I often do.
