Xperia X10 vs Desire

The Desire has had pretty much universally positive praise from everyone who's reviewed it. It's rated consistently as one of the best ones out at the moment.

All I know is I've just got mine today, and it's fantastic.

I was in the same position as u, found the X10 first, loved the spec and write ups.., then getting increasingly irritated by the fact that its release was put back two weeks for every two weeks in time we moved.., started looking elsewhere.
.
Ditto for me too. Now I hear that X10 does not support Flash or DIVX!! Is there any substance to these rumours? If so, is this because of the version of android running on the X10 (i.e. is this a function of the OS)? Thanks in advance.

I know the MediaScape app on the X10 doesn't handle DivX, so that's likely where that comment is coming from. Otherwise both DivX support and Flash support are purely software issues, and I can't see any reason why the hardware would be incapable. Adobe themselves stated Flash will run on all Snapdragon-powered phones IIRC.

Snapdragon and Android 2.1 I believe. But since SE have said they'll update the OS, that shouldn't be a problem forever.

Divx support is spotty at best with handsets. The N1 and a number of other high end handsets do not support it out of the box. Saltorio had it right, Adobe has stated that snapdragon powered phones should all see updates for flash. The flash in the desire is somewhat hit or miss based on reviews. Sometimes it doesnt work, sometimes it works flawlessly, sometimes you get an animated ad but the content doesnt work, etc. A work in progress I think.

You should also be aware that while some websites have been critical of the X10 in reviews, they nearly to the last one had pre release software. On the other hand actual end users in scandinavia (first to get it) and elsewhere of the actual release firmware are very positive about the handset and its performance and capabilities. There are some nits being picked but I see this on the Desire forums as well.

If it were me I would carefully consider how well I like sense and let that be the deciding factor. Sense could be a long ways away or it may never be ported over (witness the droid) and if you like it then the Desire is probably going to be a better bet. The Desire will also likely see more support on xda.

On the other hand if Sense is not important to you the X10 should certainly be on your short list. Folks who actually put the X10 side by side with the N1 and Desire report that the X10 screen holds up very well and many prefer it. You get a little extra real estate there and it should get better (less visible banding, more saturated colors) with the update when it moves to 16 mil. Then you have Media/timescape which may or may not be of interest. End users are all over the map on those two. Beyond that you have 1.6 which has been massaged meaningfully (bluetooth stack for example) but I would still want that update to 2.X which will come when? The other question is the lack of multi touch. Its possible someone may come up with a killer app that requries multi, outside of that over time multi touch will become the standard and more and more apps will leverage it. I myself am doubtful this will come to pass in the X10s lifetime which lets face it is maybe 2 years at best like any other phone. There are simply too many phones out there now without it for developers to not at least make their apps functional without it in the near future. Anyhow good hunting.

Okay, I'm currently rockin an HTC Hero that's having a problem with it's radio receiver. My network provider have booked me in for a repair and have promised me an exchange if it fails.(trust me, it'll fail. They've already replaced it once.)

They have at present, an HTC Desire and an Xperia X10 (the latter she mentioned to me, the former I spotted on the network site.) I'm not sure they'll offer me the Desire, but that doesn't mean I'm not gonna pitch for it if need be.

So which should I get when the time comes?

The Desire, especially if you like the Hero's sense UI. Lots of problems with the X10 such as no multitouch ever and slow UI

I think the X10 would be a step backwards in my opinion. It's only running Android 1.6 and that is a huge deal breaker for me. It's a gorgeous phone with many great features and an interesting, unique UI but Android 1.6 is a no-no for a phone that just recently released. I hope you get the Desire. That looks like an amazing phone that is also really beautiful.

I'd really like to get the Desire ideally, but beggars cant be choosers. If I cant swing it in favour of the desire I might have to settle for the X10. Incidentally, haven't Sony Ericsson announced a 2.1 upgrade very soon? I'm sure I glanced it on a couple of blogs.

Sorry I totally disagree within Lekky, if you care to do some research and maybe actually use a X10 for a few days you will find there are hardly any issues, SE have done a great job with the interface, great camera, audio quality is excellent, far better than the Iphone.
Call quality is very good and it holds it signal well. Battery life is not a problem for this type of device and the screen quality is excellent. For people to say get the Desire without obviously having tried the X10 properly should just be discounted. I have not tried the Desire, however I can find as many problems posted by people on forums as I can with the X10, which I do have knowledge of. Find people that have used a production release X10, I think you will find most of them are happy!

It is only on 1.6 however it will be upgraded, as for MT I have a 32g 3gs and can't say I really miss it. My advice is actually do a bit more research first and try to see if you can at least try both phones out. But definitely do not discount the X10.

Ah, thanks for that. Something so simple just occurred to me whilst reading your post. I'm gonna head to a shop tomorrow and see if I can play with them both. Thanks.

Great, best idea and do some further research, as I said for me it is a great phone, though I can only compare it to the Palm Pre, HTC HD2 and 3GS, this is the first proper Android Device I have owned, and so far so good.

Yeah thats the best idea, I would still say that the Desire is a better phone, but use them both and see :p

X10 is a step up from Hero without a doubt btw

I was torn between the X10 and the Desire.

To me the X10 felt really big and a bit square and pointy, If you get me.

I'd say desire if you can but the X10 is still a step up

Thanks all. I'm getting the Desire delivered next week and I also get to keep the Hero (hope to be on ebay very soon) on the condition that I extend my contract by six months.

T-Mobile? They replaced my Hero with a Desire and said I didn't have to send the Hero back but they would blacklist it. Then found that it can't be used as an iPod or anything without a sim card in.

I'm on three. There was no mention of blacklisting my hero. Incidentally, I was hoping you could explain what blacklisting a phone means/entails. Thanks in advance.

Far as I am aware, a blacklisted phone has it's IMEI registered on a European database and no network which subscribes to that database will allow that phone to make or receive a call. That's as I understand it.

I just bought the X10 for my boyfriend and we both love it! I was amazed at how fast the phone run. The screen is amazing, watching HD Films was perfect!

Only down side would be that it is indeed 1.6 but that's not too bad as I'm sure it will get 2.X soon, SONY are good with their customers.

I was so annoyed that he now has a better phone, I rooted my HERO and now run 2.1 :p

Actually - the slowness in Sony updating it's products was the second reason I didn't get an X10 (the first being I didn't actually like the look of it for some reason)

I also TOTALLY disagree with Lekky. It's honestly ridiculous to consider the Desire a better phone just because of MT and 2.1. The X10 is running an optimised version of 1.6 so has a lot of 2.1 features, not to mention the fact that the screen is bigger and more beautiful than the Desire, The phone is MUCH better looking, The Camera is actually worth using on the X10 (dire on all HTC's), and even if the VERY minor benefits of 2.1 are an ABSOLUTE must have, Sony have already announced a 2.1 update within the next few months.

Also, I have no idea what people are talking about when they call the X10 'slow'. TimeScape has a bit of lag when you first open it, but that's because it's sinc'ing with Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, and your e-mail account and pulling down the latest posts etc. It's perfectly smooth after a few seconds.

Yes the Keyboard is buggy, but you can just use the stock Android one instead or install another from the market etc.

The Android OS snobbery in these forums really gets up my nose (as you can see). I've tried the Desire, N1 and Milestone and the X10 beats them all hands down. Software can be updated, Hardware you're stuck with!
