Root XTR Sense 4.1

cache2cache ftw.

Most of us don't need anything2SD. with this ROM.

You can't flash Froyo ROMs if you partition your SD card, and it will shorten the lifespan of your SD card. Don't need it with cache2cache. You have 75mb extra to install apps. That's plenty for 99% of us.

Paul,
Why do you think it will shorten the SD card lifespan?
The partitioning or the app2sd/chache2sd?

If you are implying that flash memeory has a limited number of write cycles, (which is true), but if you think about it, the phone internal memory is built on the same technology, so basically it does not matter where the apps are residing.

I also wager that before that happens (the write error) our 2 year contract on Eris will long be expired and we will be sporting some other phone :o\\

so if i flash this rom, then run the c2c gscript, i'll still have all my stuff on sdcard and c2c will work?

it depends on what you mean by "still have all my stuff on my sdcard."

if you mean, everything on the FAT32 Partition of you SD card will remain in tact (music, pictures, downloads, .zip's, etc.), then yes.

if you mean, all of the applications that you installed previously to the ext3 partition of your SD card, then yes AND no. yes, that data will still "be" there but no, you won't be able to use it with cache2cache--you're still going to have to re-download all of your apps again.

but really, this is a small price to pay considering the gain you're getting. as i started, i'm running 42 Market apps and it took me about 10-15 minutes total to download them all again from Market over my WiFi home network. what i did next, was backed up the FAT32 portion of my SD card to my computer's desktop, then i ran Amon_RA's SD Partition and set all value's to "0". This will reformat your card to be 100% clean and FAT32, as one partition. Then I just dragged my desktop back up onto the card. Boom! I've now got not only more than enough room for my apps and cache on my phone's internal memory, but I've just opened up more room for music on my SD card and, since I don't run Linux, I don't need to worry about managing an ext3 partition at all.

As an added bonus, I know that, should anything happen to my SD card some how and render it unusable that it won't affect my app use (like it would have with apps2sd) since I've now completely un-tied the function of the phone from the SD card. This is huge.

That's 3 big benefits not to use apps2sd & cache2sd and to use cache2cache instead.

The 10-15 minute investment of your time to re-download your Market apps and backup/format/restore your SD card is WELL worth the investment.

Thanks, I guess i'm not using anything close to a lot of apps.

So. For me to get going with this (i'm sorry for the questions, but i'm still new to android, though i've wiped and reloaded WinMo roms more times than i can remember)

I'm going to backup, wipe and then run the new rom. Since I'm not going to need apps2sd here, is there another step or program to use to help reinstall the ones I have? With WinMo, I could run sashimi to reinstall all my cab files. Is there anything like that for android?

Lastly, the only experience I have with GScript was picking and choosing the scripts that were included in the 4.0.60 version of this rom. I assume some of the ones posted above aren't native in the rom. How do you get those?

Thanks!

Sorry for the delay with my reply on this, I missed your post somehow!

You should read the post I just made, as you may want to reformat your SD card. The ROM will work fine if you don't reformat the card, but you may as well free up that extra SD card space if you're not going to be using an ext3 partition anymore. Plus, this makes it easier if you ever want to check out or permanently move to a Froyo ROM.

Zach has a great write up on using his Gscript in the OP of his thread on XDA. Just follow his instructions and you'll be good to go.

okay, so i just want to get this down
i dont have a partitioned sd card(just regular)
so if i flash this rom and run cache2cache Gscript, it wont mess/delete/format anything on my sd card?

correct. if you haven't partitioned you SD card, you're good to go just by running the cache2cache Gscript.

do all of your wipes, flash the ROM, then let everything sync. after the sync is finished, run the cache2cache Gscript and reboot. then set up the ROM however you want.

i always recommend rebooting after running each Gscript, just to avoid any issues.

Well, I think I'm finally ready to take some baby steps away from Ivan's Offical 1.0 now with xtrSENSE 4.1 out... Problem is, this would be my first time using gscripts so I've got some noob questions.

1. When running a script, how easy is it to change your mind and toggle it on/off? Can it be done on the fly? Is a reboot required?

2. Looking at the screenshots and using the JIT_on and JIT_off scripts as examples, What would happen if both were chosen at the same time? Can both even be chosen at the same time? Maybe my perception of the screenshot showing gscripts is flawed.

3. Is there a consolidated list and explanation of the functions of the scripts somewhere? For instance, "save_clear_log"... What's it do exactly?

Very easy. Yes. And, sometimes--depends on the script. I always recommend it though.

Both cannot be chosen at the same time because the script is writing code to your system files. So, whichever script you ran last before Rebooting will be the one that takes effect on Reboot.

3. Is there a consolidated list and explanation of the functions of the scripts somewhere? For instance, "save_clear_log"... What's it do exactly?

Not to my present knowlege... My advice would be to get on XDA and run a few searches and ask questions in the xtrSENSE thread. Everybody is willing to help provided you've searched first.

FYI: I had flashed the "Beta" of this ROM. In the official version (out now), cache2cache is enabled by DEFAULT. Thus, no need to mess with Gscripts, unless you really have a TON of apps and need to move your apps and cache over to the SD card.

I'm probably posting this in the wrong thread, but I've updated to this rom

Since I've updated to 4.1 i have not been able to get my contacts to sync with their facebook pictures. i've tried removing and re-adding my facebook account in the Sense setup "Accounts & Sync" and i've gone to my contacts and looked for facebook contacts, which shows I have 0.

This wasn't a problem I had on 4.0.6

*Edit*
Problem is resolved. Downloading the Facebook app from the market place slowly started to sync everything up. Weird that the "Facebook for HTC Sense" didn't do that. Also weird that I didn't notice the facebook for htc sense in the previous rom.

Has anyone been running JIT in 4.1? If so, what's been your experience? Is Pandora stable with JIT in this release?

Is there even a point to running JIT with this release?

I have not run JIT with this release, but I was under the impression that Pandora is not stable with JIT at all--including Froyo.

Do you know of a situation where you can run JIT and Pandora works smoothly?

Love xtrSENSE 4.0.6.1. It's been my everyday ROM since I flashed it about a month ago. I can not wait to try 4.1! I can't believe he's made this ROM better. Mind blowing

I don't know of any situation where JIT plays nicely with Pandora. Just hoping. I love Pandora.

How is speed and battery life on this ROM? I'm using Nonsensikal at the moment and battery life isn't wonderful, not terrible either, but it seems to drop fairly quickly. Plus trying new ROM's is always fun, I've only used one so far.

Is it just the Pandora that doesn't play nice with JIT on? I do like my Pandora, but I think I want this ROM more and want to try it with JIT enabled. If Last, or Slacker, or Xiaa will work then I think I can make the sacrifice.

I have heard that A LOT of applications don't play nice with it. I only use Pandora for music, so I can't comment on the applications you listed.

Also, I read some articles on JIT that say, although our benchmarks will show improvement, it may actually SLOW the everyday use performance of the phone. Whenever I've used it, I've had lots of force close and reboot issues in general. My recommendation is to only use it on Froyo ROMs.
