Z4 or RegawMOD?

OK! I think I am ready to root my CDMA Hero.

I have read as much of the root section of the forum as I could find. Which method is the easiest, most idiot proof:), Z4 or RegawMOD?

Also, not having done this before, how much of the process is done on the phone, and how much is on the computer?

Welcome to the forums:D:D:D You will find some helpful people in this section, so feel free to ask away if you run into any problems;)


Either rooting method will be fine. Regawmod rooting process will use a computer where Z4 will not


After you are rooted, most if not all things can be done on the phone. The only time you will need the computer after rooting would be putting a safe nandroid on your computer. So if you run into any problems, you will have safety net for that nandroid.
 
I'm screwed! Maybe!

I RB's checklist, and all went fine until step 11. All I get is a white HTC screen.

I can pull the battery, and let it boot normally, and my sprint home screen comes up. and my phone appears to be on 2.1.

what am I doing wrong?

From your post! Step 11, phone will not boot into recovery from Rom Manager! Only get a White HTC screen for over 10 minutes.

I am looking for help, not to be a whipping boy!!!

First time rooting.. need steps.

When you are ready and are done ready those thread, post in the

This will give you an idea C&P from RB

None of it is done on your computer all you need is your phone.
1. Download z4root with your phone.
2. Once you have it downloaded go to the market and download a file manager(astro or es file explorer).
3. Open the file manager
4. Find the download folder in the file manager open it and select z4root
5. Then install it.
6. Goto to your apps and open z4root and choose permanent root(It will go through its thing and say rebooting. If it does not reboot simply power off and go to your apps and see if it installed the app superuser. If not run z4root again until it installs superuser)
7. Once you have super user go to the market and download rom manager
8. Open rom manager, allow superuser when prompted
9. The top of that app will be flash clockworkmod recovery, press it
10. Once it says it was successfully flashed, choose to reboot to recovery.
11. Once in recovery scroll down to backup/restore click the trackball
12.Now click backup, this will make a nandroid of your current setup ****very important*****
13. Now go back and reboot your phone and it will be just as you left it.
Now you are ready to flash a rom let me know when you get this far and we can help you get ready to do that.
 
So can you get to the recovery menu? Did you make a nandroid yet?

Edit : ok I see you can't get to recovery. Did you flash a recovery image in rom manager? Did it say successful?
 
Go back to rom manager and try and flash it again. Then Power off. Then hold power and volume down. Once in hboot hit the home button and see if you reach recovery.

Here is what I get

HBOOT
<VOL UP> FastBoot Mode
<BACK> Simlock
<HOME> Recovery

When I press HOME, it goes to the white HTC screen and stays there. How long should it take? I have let it go 5 minutes with NO CHANGE!
 
I have everything that is on the list. See below!

1. Download z4root with your phone. DONE!

10. Once it says it was successfully flashed, choose to reboot to recovery. Done! The phone powers down and the white HTC screen stays on until I pull the battery

OK. The problem is that even if the recovery didn't flash correct you should get to a red! Mark. Goto rom manager and towards the bottom there is flash alternate recovery. Amon ra. Try flashing it and then try and reboot to recovery.
 
New Problem. Tried to download ROM with ROM Mgr, and get an error message saying that I must have ClockworkMod Recovery installed before continuing!

Won't that put me back at the frozen HTC screen?
 
No you need to flash the recovery, and do not use RM to download Roms, download from the sites yourself and simply install then via recovery

Its really only good right after you root to get your first recovery flashed. Especially if your new to rooting. I doubt any of the veterans here even still have it. I gave it up long ago.
 
OK So now I need to pick a ROM and copy it to the root of my SD card. Also, the gapps.apk file to the same location. Is this correct?

Then I boot into recovery, and load these files. Still correct?

Is that it, or am I missing something?
