Zenithink ZT-180 1GHz 10" tablet

As long as he understands the zt-180 cpu as described is NOT a Cortex A8 but the ARM11 w/GC600ish GPU just like all the others (Zenithink A105, Orphan M16, Enso Zenpad4, WiiPad, FlatComputing A10, ...) as this vendor had passed on the same mistatement and just hasn't fixed it on Ebay to date...also some folks have been pricing these down under the $200US price + delivery more recently...

Yes, that was my original question so thanks for your clarification, jtbnet. Could you please point me to a vendor with the price you mention? Checking aliexpress, many vendors have good prices but limited reviews (eg.
Wholesale-10''MID Android2.1 tablet pc support wifi 3G )

I would rather pay extra for a trustworthy vendor. Any suggestions?

Thanks again

Hey guys, I've read this entire thread and it seems everybody on here has purchased their units from different vendors. I'm in the US and am interested in getting one of these from a reliable vendors...cost IS a factor of course. Can you guys recommend a reliable, low cost source who is selling the latest version of the tablet?

If you check a few posts up I mention this seller. Received a proper ZT180 from them with no problems at all

n4sa: thanks for the recommendation. I went back and read some of your previous posts. Your initial report noted some problems, and your website lists some bugs with the firmware you have linked to there.

Just curious what your current opinion on the device is? I'm hoping to use it primarily as a comic book reader (I know...pretty juvenile). I might try it as a e-book reader too if it is viable for that. What do you think?

I currently have an HTC Evo which is pretty snappy (running modified rom & kernel). Is your unit fairly fast (for a 2.1 device)?

Yeah there definitely are some bugs but the device is very usable as it stands with the current firmware.

I did have problems connecting to my wifi the first time (WPA2) but after a reboot with the new fw it was perfect. Connected from about 10 meters away and was using it for about an hour with no dropouts. I also had no problems connecting to my Nexus One AP.

The screen is a little jittery but since adding more rows and columns to the home screen (via ADW Launcher) the jumpiness of the icons has reduced a fair bit.

If I can recommend anything, it's a stylus. Since using one I have had no problems using the keypad. 100% accuracy. So for an ebook/comic book reader it would be perfect.

The device itself is relatively quick but I think due to firmware issues it sometimes slows you down. For some reason my screen orientation gets stuck and won't tilt back the other way. A reboot fixes it. I will have a look into this more tonight.

I find that some apps freeze and continue to run in the background so I need to kill them with taskkiller. This is annoying but should be fixed with fw updates. I have also noticed that some apps (after installing them via SlideME) don't show up in the apps screen.. No idea whats happening there. Will have a look into this also.

Oops, I didn't notice the item title. CortexA8 was not written in the specs.

Thanks.

The rotation is a know bug. I just turned off the auto-rotate options. It's more annoying than helpful. I can't think of a reason to not use landscape. It's better for any function. And it still rotates for the games that require it.

Any USA buyers thinking about purchasing one of these products may want to think again.

I ordered my tablet from WiiPad:

Wiipad:Google android UMPC iPAD - WIIPAD NENO 10.2" ANDROID Tablet

When finally shipped, it arrived quickly, by plane (2 days). That is where it was seized by U.S.Customs!

It was seized because the wireless has not been certified that it meets US regulations. They have not requested that I submit any documents to clear it. It looks as if this is not legal for importation into the USA. Here is what they say in a letter to me.

==============================================

The records of this office indicate that you have an interest in certain merchandise seized by U.S. Customs and Boarder protection officers at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on August 11, 2010, from DHL package #xxxxxxxxxx arriving from Hong Kong. I talked to a customs officer, by phone. I was told that they have been seizing quite a few of these (tablets from China) because of the wireless violation. When I mentioned that other US purchasers have reported receiving these, they said that they are unable to intercept them all.

If you live in the USA and have received one of these, count yourself as lucky. If you are thinking about purchasing one of these, think again!

well, the wireless device is only a usb. Could you ask to open it at the collections and remove the offending chip?

Interesting... The Orphan M16 Does have something that looks like an FCC logo on theModel # Sticker attached to the back... You might want to search some of the other seller sites and see if anyone actually has the FCC Certification # Or research with Zenithink to get it...

I'd suspect that even having that, this is going to get flagged pretty easily at customs as an E-Pad Device with WiFi for $25.00 ... and you'de likely need to provide proof of what you actually paid and pay the customs duty needed at the least...

I thought it was interesting that when I do a lookup on the the first six numbers in the MAC address of the wifi card in my zt-180, it comes back as an unknown prefix. For a legit device it will typically come back with the manufacturer (HP, Gateway, Apple, Nitendo, etc.). This might be common for Chinese devices, I don't know since I only have this one.

Edit: I wonder if it is possible that the marketplace uses such a thing to filter out illegitimate devices. Is there a way to change the MAC address (override the hw) on these devices?

I found something that may get me my tablet.

Customs said that it is missing FCC Form 740. At the FCC web site I found this:

================================================

I will be importing a personal computer from overseas and have been asked to fill out a Form 740. Can you explain this?

  • Computers and computer peripherals are Classified as either Class A (used in industrial or business settings) or Class B (used in the home or in a residential area). Your personal computer is therefore marketed as a Class B personal computer and may be imported pursuant to Section 2.1204(a)(7) of the Commission's rules: "Radio frequency devices may be imported only if one or more of these conditions are met.Three or fewer radio receivers, computers, or other unintentional radiators.are being imported for the individual's personal use and are not intended for sale." Complete the FCC ID block of Part I of the FCC Form 740 by entering "See Box 7 in Part II." You may then place an X into Box 7 of Part II, indicating that your device complies with FCC technical requirements but does not require either a grant of equipment authorization nor an FCC ID.
==============================================

I seem to just need to prove that it complies with FCC technical requirements. Anyone know how to do that? Can someone give me detailed information on the wireless card that is inside of this thing?

I too have been looking for a decent tablet, and cam across this site
Flat Computing | FlatPad A10 Android Tablet

It ships from the US.
They claim it has the ZT-180 chip, and recently dropped their price from $285USD to $220USD because of the whole A8 Coretx bungle.

I am considering getting one of these, mostly based on what you all are saying here about ZT-180 vs. other chips.

This one has android 2.1, but they don't know if they will be able to get the code from Zenithink to upgrade it to 2.2. It also does NOT have the market, and they claim Market cannot be installed at present, but that users can access slide me for apps.

Any thoughts? It's the FlatPad A-10

Thanks for your input, and I hope this helps anyone looking for a tablet. the fact that it ships from Texas (s/h is $16.00) makes it a front runner for me so far, since I'd have it inside of a week, rather than 3 weeks from China...

Unfortunately there is no number on the tag... I've attached a picture of the tag... I would have expected to find numbers like that in the small print of the manual but of course we don't get manuals with these...

Thanks jtbnet.

The FCC ID may be a separate tag. Here is an example from my Eee PC, it is to the right of the main tag.

I bought one Orphan M16 from China and one A10 from FlatComputing and they are identical except for label and shipping box... You do need to be ready to flash either with the Best Rom of the day using 32 Bit Windows and the USB driver, flashtool and Roms you can find listed here or over at SlateDroid... though the software has improved over the last month it still has a way to go to be considered ready for every user... but for the price and the experience I doubt you will be disappointed as long as you go into this eyes open having read the forums and understanding the software is still far from perfect...

That may be a problem for me.. I am quite the novice, and was looking for the tablet for basic use.. I don't have the knowledge required to flash these things, etc.. Though I suppose I could have a friend handle it for me... He's a programmer, and eats, sleeps and drinks anything computer related... Big Linux fan, so maybe Android would be a snap.... or a challenge..

I was interested in ordering from Flat Computing as well (after they lowered the price to $220). Unfortunately they're charging shipping and tax, bringing the price to over $250 (closer to $260). They units that Flat is selling are, as already noted, the exact same zt-180 as being sold elsewhere. I ended up ordering off of alibaba.com since I found a unit costing about $200 delivered (via UPS). I am somewhat concerned now based on waterhead's problem with customs. If $ isn't a big issue for you, then Flat Computing is probably the best choice since they seem to already have their inventory here in the US.

The tax is only charged to Texas residents. I saw 8.25% tax added onto my cart (I haven't pulled the trigger and ordered yet). When I questioned them, they said that once I entered the 'ship to' state, the tax would drop off, unless it was being shipped within Texas. $236.00 shipped...

My biggest concern is the ZT-180 chip/A8 issue... For a casual user of a tablet, is that going to make a noticeable difference in performance? I'm looking for an e-reader, web surfer, email , etc.. Basic stuff... Mostly to look cool on the subway :D

$236 is not a bad deal then. I emailed them about the tax (for non TX shipment) and they never answered me so I ordered elsewhere. I'd have spent $30 extra bucks for guaranteed delivery without customs issues and some type of US based warranty.

Thanks for the info. I wish I had purchased from them, instead of from an overseas seller.

I sent an email to them, asking if they could help me out. Since they have successfully imported them from China, they may have the documentation that I need.
I got a reply from Flat Computing, and they won't help me. They act as if their product is made by a completely different company.

Hello,

I have a problem that I was wondering if you could help me with.

You see, I purchased a ZT-180 10.2" Android tablet from another seller. It is named the WiiPad NeNo. It was shipped to me from Hong Kong, but the local U.S.Customs office seized it upon it's arrival. This was because there was no label with the FCC ID of the wireless inside of it, and because of a missing Form 740.

Wiipad:Google android UMPC iPAD - WIIPAD NENO 10.2" ANDROID Tablet

I believe your A10 10.2" Android tablet is from the same manufacturer. Can you assist me in obtaining the information I need, so that I can give it to U.S. Customs? I will then refer all interested buyers to your site for purchase. :)

If your tablet is not the same as the WiiPad NeNo, then I thank you for your time.

Paul

Paul:

We can not help you in this manor. Our product is made by a manufacturer
that has all the proper paperwork and we have had zero issues getting our
products in from China through customs.

Sorry, you will need to go back to wiipad for help.

Todd
Oh well, it was worth a try. If WiiPad was of any help, I would already have the tablet!
