Root ZTE ZMAX Pro (Z981) "off topic" root discussion

I'm confused. The article says download servers were took down but it still works. Off topic I know but was hoping there would be a rom for us in the future

Well that sucks... Shows how long I've been m.i.a. because I hadn't even heard this. However, the article does state that the open source project should be continued as "lineage os" but we will see what happens. I'm sure people will figure out how to continue making custom Roms. Even if they're built straight from Android source, and modified in their own respective ways.

Tis the season to be THANKFUL you have a device that works.. and that Messi even took the time to look into this device when I pleaded with him to do so... :)

Messi is busy with exams, I talked to him the other day. He will resume looking into this device after he deals with real life. Nobody harass him please as he may not have time to mess with the phone till the end of January. Root will come just have some patience and understand that devs have real lives, real responsibilities, and real families.

Got the zmax pro for Christmas came from a HTC One M7 on nougat "still have it of course". need to scratch that flashaholic itch on this device bad XD it needs some 7.0 lovin. more than willing to help in anyway i can that dosnt involve ending up with a rather large brick... unless its worth it.

If you review the thread, you'll see there is only One Man that can help us now..

Even though many have contributed information.. and shared there results in trying different methods... ;)

No...there is only... Messi.. that has the skill and is willing to put forth the effort in the hopes of obtaining root access for us.

But that will not even begin until Feb/Mar of the year 2017.

So enjoy your HTC.. for root.. and the ZMP for the big screen.. and maybe the two shall meet by the end of Quarter 1 2017.. :)

yea had a gander really admire the effort people have put in, would like to do whatever i can to contribute as well even with my limited skills. But id have to agree chances are root wont happen until nougat gets dropped for us not that there is a rush or anything people got lives outside of android shockingly... lol i dont mind the wait but i greatly appreciate the community effort and i know im not alone. Android wouldn't be what it is without the hacker community. All for the love of truly making it yours.

It was only a bug fix and feature added voice calling. You shouldnt Notice much unless you are having bugs before or having some now

I have posted on ZTE's public forums, with no real response. I requested a bootloader unlock option and fastboot directly with support. They claimed they'd put me in touch with the software team in China and I'd hear back in 3-4 days, but my last response from them was on the 19th. I am not holding my breath, but if I do hear back, I'll be sure to share.

Agreed. I had a ZTE Boost Max and at first it was just root and a debloated ROM. Once we got some kernel mods those alone outweighed just a debloated themed ROM. From personal experience over the last 7-8 years if we haven't gotten root yet, we probably won't ever had it sadly. It's a great phone for the price
 
I've tried the dirtycow exploit and the phone gets to the last command and fails. Using linux I believe may work. Im trying to install vmware and oracle, but I get my virtual memory is too low and will not run the linux emulator.
I want to try linux to see if the dirtycow exploit will finish the last step that fails on windows.
I'll try to increase the vm and see if messi's twrp works.
I know my own risk. I have 3 zmax pro's
49.99 each..

I mean we're looking for root, then an unlocked custom bootloader, then MAYBE someone will make a custom ROM. Root is maybe realistic the rest are a ways out.

If there are sources to get a build to go, I know a few people who can put together an unofficial cm. But heck, I'd be okay with the factory firmware if we had a way to add some options in...

That would be nice but it all comes back to root and bootloader. Modified stock ROM? New bootloader, not unlocked then could be done as root I think. We don't have a stock fw yet. Maybe will happen, maybe can be done in nandroid or twrp, all resting on root. Kernel for oc? Cool if you can compile from sources, its easy. Don't think the sources area up yet are they? Either way how do you apply the kernel but root or rom. Most if not all wings hang on that elusive root
