broken screen. Need suggestions?

just broke the display screen of my s20 ultra and fixed it. wondering if I should go with screen protectors or tempered glass.
If the crack is on your S20 display, the only way to fix it is, unfortunately, to broken screen. Regardless of how large of a crack your screen has or where the crack occurred, the entire display will need to be bootzine replaced by an experienced repair technician or Samsung Support.

Apps Wear OS battery optimization

Hello,

I'm developping a tracking application that runs on Wear OS watches. I have some troubles when the watch goes to sleep. As soon as the watch goes to Deep Idle mode, all sensors acquisition stops. For that I'll need to whitelist the app using:

Code:
                                Intent intent = new Intent();
                                intent.setAction(Settings.ACTION_REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONS);
                                intent.setData(Uri.parse("package:" + packageName));
                                context.startActivity(intent);

This piece of code works well on mobile version but nothing happen on Wear OS version. I realized that Wear OS as no UI to set the battery optimization mode which should be the cause of the fact that nothing happens when trying to change the optimization.

I also used a wake lock to keep the CPU partially awake with:

Code:
                PowerManager powerManager = (PowerManager) getSystemService(POWER_SERVICE);

               wakeLock = powerManager.newWakeLock(PowerManager.PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK, "MY-WAKELOCK");

But even with that the watch goes to deep sleep after about 15min ?

The last solution I see is to force the screen on or at least dimmed but it will drain the battery very fast.

Is there another solution to keep sensors working ? How can I whitelist my app on a Wear OS device as no UI seems available ? As anyone already encountered this issue?

Spooky sounds

The only way to know for sure which sound is playing is to try selecting a tone and then try all of the options until you recognise it (they'll play as you select them). I was hoping you'd be able to say something like "it's my default notification sound/ringtone", or else "it's a tone of some sort but not one any other app uses".

The question "is there a sound baked in to the messaging software" is a bit too generic: any such thing would be baked into the specific app, not all messaging apps. I don't use Google's Messages app (has no advantages for me, since I don't use RCS "Chat", and very poor customisation), but I've never heard of it having some unchangeable notification sound (my wife uses it and uses her own choice of notification).

However, to get notifications only from your contacts you probably will have to use Do Not Disturb settings (unless MacroDroid can do this). Notifications from contacts only is an option in Do Not Disturb, but there's nothing like that in Messages' settings.

Help Google search results appearance

I guess the other browser is the one from the Google search bar? That's probably Chrome as well: Chrome can act as the system webview, and Google try to make that the default (though the Android System Webview component should still be available as an alternative if you hunt through your settings, which might be worth checking).

It definitely depends on the browser. I just tried Google searches on a few browsers on my phone, with the following results:

* Firefox Focus looked the same as ever: no icons, no extra titles.
* Edge did show icons, but no extra title, just the URL, a page title and preview, though the page title was in a larger font than on Focus (not as bad as yours, but all of your fonts seem larger relative to the screen width than mine).
* Naked Browser Pro (an ancient, minimalist browser) produced the same as Edge.
* Lightning and Brave both showed exactly what you see above: icon, extra site title.

I didn't test it in my main browser (Firefox), since I don't use Google with that. And I don't have any search bars, so didn't test the system webview. I also didn't test it in Chrome since I disable that app.

Since I wasn't signed in to Google in any of those tests the differences are presumably due to the browsers' settings or processing rather than my account settings. Whether there is a setting in Chrome that changes this I don't know - it's unlikely to be labelled clearly as "appearance of Google search results" though. Changing font sizes might help, but only if that can be done without causing readability problems elsewhere.

One ironic thing: these more space-consuming features only appear in the mobile version of the Google search site! Switch to desktop site and the icons and extra titles disappear (though you may then find the page unusable on a phone for other reasons!).
Op read this, firefox is the most wonderful of the browers for Android.

Can you flash samsung firmware from 2 different phones ?

https://www.phonemore.com/compare/p...6u-vs-samsung-galaxy-a22-sm-a225mdsn/19045057
Simply because you have two phones that look similar if you read through the above link the issue you can't ignore is the two phones have very different, internal hardware configurations. Smartphone ROMs are very specific so they're not interchangeable, and they're not based on appearance of the phone. It's all about the need for a an exact match between the software and the hardware.
ROMs are created for each model of phone individually where there's a common Android kernel but all added the drivers, firmware, and system utilities need to correspond with each model's hardware components. If you're assuming smartphone ROMs are similar to Install disc/media for a desktop PC, they are not. ROMs contain only the necessary software to match the hardware. They do not have any kind of hardware detection functionality nor a collection of possible software packages to install, like with a typical Windows Install disc for example. So the ROM for your A22 will correspond with your A22 phone, it will for example include the firmware to work with its Mediatek G80 processor but not necessarily with your A13's Mediatek 700 processor (one mismatch among several others, i.e. different GPUs, different partition tables for the different internal storage, etc.
Go ahead and experiment flashing different ROMs but don't be surprised when you brick your phone. Odds are it's just a soft-brick and you just need to re-flash with the correct ROM to restore your phone working condition again. If you end up hard-bricking it, that's a more serious matter.

Bedtime mode

Hi all,

I've just started noticing an issue with Bedtime Mode and receiving messages from Starred Contacts.

I've got the settings configured for 'Based on schedule' and 'Do Not Disturb for Bedtime Mode' turned on. However when bedtime mode kicks in, I don't get messages or calls from my starred contacts.

I've had to disable it at the moment and using the 'Sleeping' schedule under Do Not Disturb which works, but I'd prefer to use Bedtime Mode.

Has anyone else seen this behaviour?
As I recently find out (with my new Redmi Note), seems that Sleep and DND operate differently depending on the phone's brand.

With my Samsung, I use the sleep mode and works great. I have it set up for every day, between 11pm and 6:30am, calls and messages from favorites and repeated callers, all alarms and media (sometimes I game after 11 and like to hear the sounds :) ) DND is disabled but set up for 1 hour (for meetings or when I don't want to be bothered for 1 hour). When I turn on DND it only stays on for 1 hour and then off again.

On my Redmi, there's no Sleep mode (or I haven't found it yet) but DND does not have a timer and will stay on until I disable it manually (which if I forget I will miss calls and texts from my customers) and under Schedule turn on time, it will turn on DND but will not turn it off at specified time. So I have it disabled it all together. Any advice is welcome on this matter for this Redmi phone :)

On the other hand, Bedtime mode (part of Digital Wellbeing) disables all notifications regardless.

Samsung software proximity sensor is driving me nuts

According to Samsung, my a32 5G doesn't have a proximity sensor. The Samsung website lists it as "Sensor,Virtual Proximity Sensing" meaning, I suppose, that the front camera is the "proximity sensor" but even so, you'd think it could figure out when it was and wasn't pressed up against the side of my head. That's an interesting question about the screen protector, though. I do have a glass screen protector on it, and the next time the screen protector breaks, I'll try to remember to check if the virtual proximity sensor works any better without it.
Virtual Proximity Sensor (VPS) uses the gyroscope, accelerometer and software to simulate you moving your phone against your ear and then turn off the screen (like in a call), instead of using hardware. Unfortunately, this also works bad with my Samsung S20FE: when I put my phone in my back pocket (even upside down): it will "butt" dial which thanks to locked screen I ended up with a whole bunch of number on the dialer only). But then again, it could be because of the "tap" feature to wake up the phone (or should I say "butt tap"? :)

I don't think the VPS was a great idea, but seems to work great in my Xiaomi Redmi Note 10S rather than in my Samsung S20FE. BTW, I believe it was Xiaomi the first company to incorporate VPS into their phones.

Buy unlocked or Verizon?

The unlimited original quality Google Photos storage was linked to the phone, not the SIM. I believe that the article is wrong in claiming that it's only the original Pixels retained it, but also not sure where the cut-off was (I think my Pixel 2 still had it). But a new one, no, definitely not.

Of course that means that if you want to use your old Pixel 2 XL for this purpose you must turn off Google Photos backup on any new phone, since anything uploaded from there will be using your storage (it may be worth checking whether newer ones can do free storage of reduced quality images, as I vaguely remember something like that when the removal of free original quality storage was announced).

But remember, your Pixel 2 XL won't last forever (my Pixel 2 failed catastrophically a few months after I replaced it). At some point you'll have to give up on this.

Help Battery drains too quickly

Well under that hypothesis the best bet would be to find a decent replacement battery. The tricky bit is knowing which ones are worth buying, especially with online reviews so frequently and easily gamed.

(My experience of buying replacement batteries is limited. When I've done so I've tried to find OEM batteries, but even then I once ended-up with a fake from what I'd previously found to be a reliable vendor - and that fake lacked a temperature sensor, so reported the same temperature at all times, which is a clear safety hazard with a lithium ion battery! So all I really know is that it's tricky, but I'd always assume that the old adage of "if it looks too good to be true, it probably is" will apply).

How to transfer apps AND DATA to new tablet

I am encountering the same "doesn't work" situation using Smart Switch. I have a new Tab S8+ and wish to transfer apps and data from "old" Tab S. Smart Switch was the recommended device. The error I get, using USB cords as directed, is the fact the screen continually shows "connect to new machine," even though I have the USB connected to both Tab S and Tab S8+.

Does anyone know if there is a special cord required for Smart Switch to properly function?

I have used dropbox on my PC, but have not tried it on my tablets. Does it work as smoothly for tablet-to-tablet as it does for PC-to-PC?

Help Spammed system notifications while their notifications are turned off

Again, "I'm loading apps not dependent on google", "I never had this issue on my previous Blackview mobiles". Why do disabled apps with disabled notifications still spam notifications and how to I silence them for good.
Google Play Services is one of the worst things around.

It is literally tied to everything on a device, and so is the most nefarious spyware in the Google arsenal.

Those messages are not coming from Google Play Services.
They are coming from any number of system apps that monitor whether or not Google Pkay Services is running.

l even have seen devices that will continuously disable the Wi-Fi if Google Play Services is disabled.
"Wi-Fi Manager requires Google Play Services to function"
Funny, because the Wi-Fi works just fine without the stupid 'Wi-Fi Manager', which obviously only exists to ensure that Google Play Services is running.

Here is my solution- use a firewall.
Leave Google Play Services running, but block internet access for it.

Disable whatever Google crap you can, and block whatever you can't.

I block apps I have disabled as well, because that is how much I trust Google.

The firewall operates via the VPN api on Android, and only allows internet access to what you choose.

Only one app can access the VPN api at a time on a single device.
However, you can set up more than one profile on a single device, and run a separate VPN api on each.
