Google Sending sms/mms from Mac via Google Messages failing.

That's really odd. Just for comparison I use my Linux Mint Laptop and bluetooth to my Pixel Pro 8 and have no problem sending text via Chrome. I never turned RCS off.

Could it be ad blocking software on your browser? Have you tried connecting your phone with a USB cable?

About all I can think of at the moment.
Thanks a mill for reply. Yeah it's RCS (sorry if forgot the abbreviation before) Don't think I have ad block software for this requirement (will test). Will also test USB-cable.

Oh. pls accept poor English language.

Swiping gestures explanation

Basically the phone can tell the difference between swiping with the tip of your finger and the edge of your hand (much bigger area). And it can tell the difference between swiping from an icon and swiping from the edge of the phone. So between these differences it should be extremely easy for the phone to distinguish these gestures.

To be honest, I find the "palm swipe for screenshot" gesture difficult to make work at all (perhaps because my phone case has a slightly raised lip), and hard to do reliably. Actually I also find it awkward to hold the phone and do this at all. I've tried to see whether I can trigger it accidentally, e.g. using multiple fingers, or laying a finger along the screen, and have not managed it so far. So I'm not sure how you triggered it accidentally during a call, since I find it hard enough to trigger deliberately. ;)

ROMs Errors trying to compile LineageOS 17.1 with updated clang (and other patches)

I'm trying to build LineageOS 17.1 for the Xperia XZ2 Compact. I have gotten it to successfully build stock, but now I'm onto optimizing it (mostly just applying patches from a XZ1 Compact repo). These patches are for the XZ1 Compact, which uses the Snapdragon 835, or the MSM8998. The XZ2 Compact uses a Snapdragon 845, or the SDM845. A few of these patches I run into errors when compiling. I'm mostly focusing on Clang since I know that would help with performance and battery. I'm not really sure what the other patches do.

Patch 1:
android_device_sony_lilac/patches/update-clang.patch at lineage-17.1 · Flamefire/android_device_sony_lilac

The error:

Extra context:
displays_str is not in the MSM8998 source. I'm not really sure what it does, but if I remove it, it continues to compile but runs into a different error later on. I also don't want to disable some core functionality related to the display, so I'd rather not remove it. There is updated and different code for the function in LineageOS 18.1 source, but replacing the old code with the new code only results in a different error relating to displays_str.

Error 2:

Extra context:
I have no idea what this means or how to fix it. It would probably be helpful if I captured a bit more in this screenshot, but I didn't. I would prefer to get more info once I get displays_str fixed instead of bypassing it again.

For these patches I will get into less detail, as I don't think it's needed, but if you need it, I can recompile with the patch to get a full error.

Patch 2:
android_device_sony_lilac/patches/fix-llvm-unwind-warning-and-findUnwindSections.patch at lineage-17.1 · Flamefire/android_device_sony_lilac

The compiling error was command not found and suggested replacing -Wno-bitwise-conditional-parentheses (On line 11 in the patch) with -Wno-bitwise-op-parentheses and it just worked. Not sure what it changes or even if that just invalidates the entire patch, but it worked.

Patch 3:
android_device_sony_lilac/patches/suppress-bool-operation-warning.patch at lineage-17.1 · Flamefire/android_device_sony_lilac

The compiling error was again command not found, but had no suggestion for replacing -Wno-bool-operation (On line 12 in the patch). Not sure what this does either. No fix for it (aside from not including) for now.

Patch 4:
android_device_sony_lilac/patches/update-abi-dumps.patch at lineage-17.1 · Flamefire/android_device_sony_lilac

This causes a bunch of errors but the compiler helped me and I was able to fix it with the four commands below.
$ANDROID_BUILD_TOP/development/vndk/tools/header-checker/utils/create_reference_dumps.py -l libhidlbase
$ANDROID_BUILD_TOP/development/vndk/tools/header-checker/utils/create_reference_dumps.py -l libhwbinder_noltopgo
$ANDROID_BUILD_TOP/development/vndk/tools/header-checker/utils/create_reference_dumps.py -l libstagefright_foundation
$ANDROID_BUILD_TOP/development/vndk/tools/header-checker/utils/create_reference_dumps.py -l libprotobuf-cpp-full
Again not sure if this just invalidates the patch, but it worked.

I would really appreciate some help with this. I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to coding.

Will all my tasks be lost from my Android Calendar app?

I have a Motorola and the installed calendar app is the Google calendar.
So no need to fret about losing anything as long as it is setup with your Gmail account.
But you need to verify exactly which calendar app you are using....
A belated thank you, Dannydet, for this helpful reply (the last few days have been hectic, and I could not use my computer). I am unable to find out which calendar is on the phone. I have tried in various ways, but all I see is "Calendar". However, in Settings, I did find Backup, which includes Calendar and other files, and it has now been backed up (to my Google account, it seems). I shall look at my gmail account and see how that figures in all this. However, I keep no online diaries or calendars, so there will be no need to transfer events etc. from my computer.

If there are any further hurdles to jump, I shall enquire again of this marvellous forum. One final question, Dannydev: do I presume rightly that, in the event of setting up a new Android phone, all that would be required would be for me to connect to my Google (not gmail) account, and the Calendar tasks would be automatically transferred?
With thanks again,
S.

change TV input from google TV app

if your phone had an IR blaster, you might be able to switch inputs. however, most phones did away with that many years ago. i do not know how the chromecast remote can switch inputs, it might be something similar, but i am not completely sure. but if you could change the inputs via the app, you would think they would make it completely obvious that you could. so i doubt, since you can't find it in the app anywhere, that you can.

Should I switch to YouTube Premium?

Maybe it's just my ears, but I don't hear anything different between the same songs on Amazon Music Unlimited and YouTube Music - in fact, YTM has a little more "punch" and AMU seems weaker. I would have expected that had I experienced a wider soundstage... but I don't.

I'll try tweaking the earbuds and my over-ear headset, but I'm pretty sure I'll kill off AMU during the free trial.

Medicare supplement plans

@The_Chief Understand that in most states, you can't simply just go back to original medicare. You are subject to underwriting. If you have any Pre-existing condition, the supplement companies (in most states, not all) have the right to reject you or jack up your rates astronomically. That's how seniors feel trapped. That's why the medicare decisions are very important and will have consequences on your medicare for the rest of your life.

Downloading (paid!) APK from Google Play & sideloading it?

Hi all,

kind of a weird question due to some special circumstances:

I have an older (ca. 2019) Amazon 10" Fire tablet running something like FireOS 7.xx which AFAIK was still based on Android 5.x. I also have a Galaxy J-something smartphone (running Android 7.x IIRC) somewhere which I can't find atm, unfortunately (I've been using non-Android phones for years). So this is about said Amazon tablet primarily.

I have the Google Play store installed on the tablet (as per several instructions on the net), and it generally works fine. Since I installed the Google Play app, I only ever got apps from there.

Now I'd like to buy the Caustic 3 synthesizer Android app, which is still widely regarded as the best app of this kind for Android. It may (or may not) be abandoned, but you seemingly can still buy it at Google Play. Last version was (and probably will alway be) 3.2 from 2013.

This app comes as a freely downloadable base app and a separate for-purchase "Unlock Key" (no IAP). If I look it up in the Play Store from my desktop PC, it looks like both are still in the store and most importantly, you can still purchase the unlock key.

However, if I try to find it in the Play Store bolted-on to the Amazon tablet, both are nowhere to be found. That's a bit weird since the app should run fine on Anroid 5.x. Amazon's own (kinda joke of an) app store has the (v3.1!) program itself, but not the unlock key.

There have been some reports of people running the Amazon-downloaded app with a Google Play-acquired unlock key, but I can't see how that could work.
In my case, this would require me to purchase the unlock key in some way off the tablet (maybe inside the desktop browser?), and then to somehow get it onto the tablet and hopefully, the unlock magic would still work then.

I never read anything about downloading the APK files of your own purchases directly from Google Play to anything other than the final target device and, even if such an APK download was feasable, I have no idea whether or not the licensing-DRM-whatever magic can be made to work after an APK transfer.

Please note that I'm only ever talking here about making a legitmately purchased app work and not about 'hacks' or such of any kind.

Could someone tell me if and how this could work?

I apologize in case this has been discussed before in another thread but my search turned up nothing that hit the spot (downloading your "own" APKs and "messing with it").

TIA
Android hmmmmm... I mean Andrite is completely AOSP. LOOGLE is myself/yourself as far as no cost. Only Playstore requires payment for extra features.
