Chrome starting accidentally

I have to use a firewall to turn off internet access to Google Play, because if I don't then when I wake up many apps will be updated- apps that I do not want updated at all!

This is regardless to the Do Not Auto-Update Apps setting, which is always off.

What is your default browser?
It is possible that Chrome is chosen, and so will restart when you open a link from another app.

Default Browser

If this is set to your own browser already, then you have another issue.

Different browsers integrate differently, some more than others.

My favorite browser, Lightning, is great- but it will not search for song lyrics when asked to by my music app (Black Player).

But an option to use the stock browser (yuck) or Chrome (double yuck) pops up instead.

So I had to find another browser that would also show up on this option when it pops up.

Lucky for me, I did.

FOSS Browser (F-Droid).

I made FOSS my default browser, and now all apps that have links open them with FOSS.

It is very small, and efficient.

When I am doing my own thing on the web, I use Lightning.
And now FOSS is handling all my links from other apps.

It seems like a pain, but after getting it set up and tweaking the settings it actually works quite well.

Galaxy Note 10 vs. Galaxy Note 9

Since my Note 9 took a 2 day saltwater bath I'll be upgrading anyway. I can't wait to see what improvements they have made on the 10 versus the 9.

I did see the batteries are massive (4800ma on the +) with some weird crossword solver sip calculator Onlinesbi hypercharging tech. I hope they turn into personal explosive devices like a couple years ago.
I tend to also buy the phones on a 1 year delay after release, so an S10 variant might be at the right point for me some time in the next year.

Uninstall Gmail built in browser

Well we are getting off-topic, but I trialled Google News for a few weeks, at the end of which I had decided that it was some sort of bizzare social or psychological experiment: to release an app which claims to learn your interests but in fact takes no notice of what you read or what you tell it never to show you again. Perhaps the idea was see whether users would give in and conform to what they were told they liked, a sort of gaslighting by algorithm? Or maybe their algorithm just couldn't accept a Brit who isn't interested in football or celebrity gossip and so ignored my instructions to stop showing me that #### (which reliably made up the majority of my "personalised" feed, no matter what I did).

On the plus side, I decided that Google not understanding what interested me might be a good thing ;)

S-off while in the fastboot menu

Been a few years since I did this type of thing with an HTC, and never with an M8, so I don't know the S-Off tools for that (which sometimes depend on the firmware version anyway).

Can you get into recovery? If not that might mean you flashed the wrong recovery rather than the wrong boot.img (why were you flashing that anyway? Was this a magisk install?). Conversely if you can get into recovery you can use that to flash a new ROM (use a computer to copy on to the SD card or use adb while in the recovery).

If youscan't get into recovery the simplest option might be to relock the bootloader then flash an ruu. S-Off will let you flash ruu for a different cid or an older firmware version, but it will also let you flash one from an incompatible M8 version so you need to take care if you go that way.
