You bought the SM-N9600 Latin American variant Note 9 new in the US? That makes it a grey import, and presumably it didn't come from an official Samsung outlet?

Samsung does impose regional activation restrictions on their phones, in that it must be first activated with a local SIM, and a call made from the country or region it was intended for.

Amazon, sold by Samsung came in the box sealed (both my s7 edge when I got it) But what I am being told is that Android 9 isn't released yet for my phone (according to samsung support)

Your project would definitely be easier if all the devices were on the same OS. However, there are some Android apps that claim to do what you're asking.

For example, Screen Time Parental Control App claims to work across all devices, however, its reviews are mixed.

This one, xfi Locator, basically just locates devices, regardless of their OS.

Finally, Kidslox absolutely sounds like it's the best but, again, there are mixed reviews. I think I'd start with this one and give it a good look, to see if it suits your needs.

There are many others in the Play Store; you can search for 'iphone parental' to see a lot--some of which have nothing to do with iPhones.

Mine are remotely installed we've seen people sitting outside the house in cars doing god knows what...but then boom a new malware appears.

You're putting too much attention on that Wyze app and not on the actual problem. You need to get your phone connected to your WiFi network in order for that app, or any app, to be able to connect to your local network. That app cannot function if your phone isn't set up properly, it's your phone that needs to detect and connect to your home network.
In your case, I'd strongly recommend you just hire a local IT person to come out and set up your router for you. If you're averse to this, just keep in mind that your home network needs to be set up in a safe and secure way, today's Internet is a very, very hazardous entity so for you and your family it's important not to skimp on this. Look at this as a long-term investment, not just an expense. Once it's set up and functioning, adding things like a security camera will be a lot less of hassle.

The button is acting as the volume down button would on headphones with buttons in the cable, with a button mapper app then using it as a back button instead. In poweramp, I can't see any setting which specifically disables audio output via the headphones, as it seems it just depends on android itself to work out where to send the audio. The button works great all the time, but every so often the phone can't decide if headphones are plugged in or not, so then can't decide on where to route the audio. It's a shame I can't wire a button in another way. :-(

Just an update for app disabler.

Since disabling the troublesome apps my battery is getting much better. No more 30% drain.

So happy with this app.

My US Android 8.0.0 Sprint Version doesn't show Nova Launcher usage either. I just installed my favorite battery usage app, Battery Widget Reborn! so maybe I'll have some info early tomorrow morning.

Given the fact that the fairly new distribution type app bundles require Googe services does or is affecting open source (AOSP)? I am aware that the developers of apps has a choice and the advantages that provides the developers. Smaller apps and let Google fill in the rest seems to less work. What do you think?

You have an app that has adware attached to it. Go to settings, apps & notifications, app info and find optional apps and turn them off. See if that helps.

any kind of troubleshooting on phones, you look to answer two main questions. is it a hardware or software issue. if you do a factory reset and nothing happens then that answers the software question which can only mean that it is a hardware issue. looks like it will need to be fixed on the inside of the phione.

Some electronic faults can be temperature dependant. Often in electronic circuit fault finding, one might use freezer spray and a heat gun to chill and heat suspect components, like transistors, diodes, etc.

As an update to this, I figured out the problem.
It had nothing to do with what the default video player was, it was more about permissions.
So at a certain OS level, http sites are no longer accessible, only https. To bypass this restriction, you need to place the following in your manifests file:

ah i see ... right - i just close em cause i find the switcher a bit of a pain if there are too many things open ... plus i dont want stuff like email and other secured apps being able to be viewed from switcher screen ... but that is just me being overly secure about things

.... i do like that swipe on the bar to switch apps feature ... ie you dont even have to open the switcher view

Thats not good, I agree with Handron , it does sound like its a hardware problem. My stepfather has an S8 and I have taken it off the charger many times and dont recall it being hot. Seem like a motherboard problem.

As far as data being deleted but folder and names remains nothing to worry about.. However, the fact that "several (but not all)" were gone is a bit odd. I wouldn't have thought of it myself but onbrze bring up a very good point.

Most printers are very proprietary now so if the manufacturer doesn't allow support (driver/firmware) for a product to developers, that makes things a lot more difficult to use that particular printer usable as a universally accessible one. Years ago you could often get by using a generic laserprinter/ghostscript driver to at least have basic printing functionality. Now that printers have all kinds of branded services tied to them, that workaround rarely applies.
I'd still look into setting up that printer using Google's Cloud Print service, unless you're in a situation like a health service organization where things like sending client sensitive data up into miscellaneous online servers isn't an option.

There are various options for a high contrast screen which is not the issue. High contrast font is a very strange experiment that involves something like a outline font with a white outline. It is completely unreadable when it becomes small. It's very hard to read even at a large size. Somehow this has turned on and it should not be on.

Unless you did actually add in your home WiFi network previously, since it's a first time usage situation the phone won't be connecting to any WiFi connection, and once you pulled the SIM card out that also removes any access to a cellular connection. With no online access that phone cannot authenticate itself to any Google account.
Since you were able to get it past that initial set up process, confirm your home WiFi network is established (try rebooting your router if there's a problem) and/or put the SIM back in and check that it's detected (look in the Settings menu). Reboot the phone and try again, the phone does need some kind of online connectivity and you'll need to add in an active Google account to continue using it.
