Rooted my Pixel 3a, now I want to install android again - is that possible?

Factory images should work. Perhaps it might be easier to just flash an android custom rom first. If you can fastboot boot twrp recovery you should be able to flash a rom. Then if desired, maybe try and go back to the stock image from there.

I'm not sure if I can fastboot on it. I will have to try it later and report back... Here is to hoping it works!

I want to root my phone

You need to specify the model of your device as there are many things related to rooting a device. You need to unlock the bootloader for which you need to setup ADB and fastboot, then there is Custom recovery and Custom ROMs. If you are new to rooting then first refer these guides -

Volume goes to zero

ocnbrze:
A virus can do anything it is designed to do. Making a phone's volume properties go to zero seems like a real winner for me... emulate a hardware problem with a virus. Can't you even see that it is a perfect virus? Hello? Would you not identify zeroing out volume as malicious?
---> I sure as hell would!!! <---Elementary. A good trick, if that's what it is.Ran a deep Malwarebytes scan, found nothing. I just likely have some loose solder connection on my mainboard that is making this 2 year old J7 Star Samsung phone useless.

I feel that you lack sufficient imagination to be responding to posts like this.
just an fyi you use the "@" in front of my name, you will send a notification that i was being mentioned.....like this.... @pcmacd

and as @mikedt said.....most viruses these days are not pointless. people spend a lot of time coming up with virus, might as well make money on it. useless virus these days are pointless. back in the day, hackers would do it for publicity, but now they do it for the money. why would someone take the time to code for volume to go down? it does not make sense to me.

all the hacks i have heard will steal your identity, get your credit card info, and such.

and no...... zeroing out volume is not malicious

and i find your paranoia and lack of knowledge disturbing.

Moto Z2 force

I had the phone forever, and you can not root it.
Unless you had an emergency.
Actually there is no need to root it in the first place unless you got a triangle that is sticking out on the homescreen and switch,
to Odin, it is a real bothersome googling the right commander, took me nearly a few weeks, solid and you got to know the serial number.
By heart and memorize it until your brain fries out. Just do not root it.

Probably not a development, but...

The Settings > Display > Styles & Wallpaper options on a Pixel phone let you choose what accent color should be used throughout the OS (including for the volume controls); other OEMs may implement similar options, but that's entirely up to each manufacturer to do.

I think the alternative would be rooting the phone and installing a recompiled version of the Settings.apk to add your desired colors.
