Evo blowing past the normal 30 FPS!

You just don't click the links that say anything about EVO and fps. It's not difficult to do. Kind of how I when I review this thread, I look for names in the left column and just bypass what River enters.

nothing personally against river, but that was pretty funny.

and river, just to be fair, Sprint and HTC have acknowledged the problem that you still fail to see.

RiverOfIce is a spy from HTC sent to all forums, including ours, to try to get us off of this issue so HTC can try to find another excuse to not fix this. Ignore him. He is the new MBELL. He is useless, he knows nothing. Disregard any further shenanigans that he says.

FYI, I'm being serious about that, he knows nothing. He's here to either stir up the pot, or he's actually from HTC trying to 'side' with them.

Hey, I am the HTC implant. I just don't say anything because I don't know anything. Now can we all get along? Everyone is entitled to their opinion as to what they want in their phone, and we are all entitled to complain when our expectations are not met. If that is a problem, just don't read a topic which clearly discusses the short comings of the phone as it relates to the fps issue, if that is not a concern for you.

As for me, I am just enjoying the phone with all the shortcomings but will not criticize anyone for pointing out anything negative about the phone.

well said geo. a lot of people "defend" the phone but really, unless you work for HTC or similar, there's no point in trying to squash complaints. i owned an iPhone previously and i didn't have many issues. if someone complained, i just ignored them. everyone here is welcome to do the same, but some get too defensive.

anyway, back to the topic, if the fix isn't released within 2 weeks, i'm canceling within my 30 days. its pretty gross to use this phone in it's current state for the next 1-2 years.

I have now posted 2 posts that mentioned the fact that some of these complaints have been posted in non fps threads. Of course its easy to not read about it if the post is titled FPS cap or 30FPS or lag or something like that. I have mentioned in 2 different post on this thread that my complain was reading about the FPS cap on threads that had nothing to so with FPS caps. I cited an example from this morning.

So yes it is difficult to do.

My original post in this thread was about keeping the FPS whinning in threads that were relevant to fps. It said nothing about commenting and complaining in threads about fps.

Imagine if you made a post about the fps cap and everyone starting complaining about the camera in your threads. Or battery life.

As i stated in the post above this one. My complaint was about spamming threads not related to fps with complaints about fps.

I am not wanting any issue to be sugar coated. I wish for the perfect phone and think posters and users should voice their displeasure on forums and directly to sprint and htc.

Somehow my post was turned into a post designed to get people to shut up about the fps. It was about getting people to stop negative complaint spamming in threads not related to the complaint.

This thread is entitled 30fps. Such a complaint would be more relevant in one of those 'other threads'.

In any case this was clearly a "here are my results" thread, not a whining, complaint or conjecture thread (except for an admonishment towards HTC)

Despite this, the "this is not an issue so stop talking about it cause your freaking people out" segment are comming here tracking crap in and basically trashing the thread down to their level. Reasonable debate and opinion aside, some of the participants statements are so laughable, im not sure how they can miss thier own stupidity.

Don't take it too personal, there is no forum in the world that would be 100% on topic at all times. An expectation like that would be surreal. Much like how some of us seek the perfect phone. =D

However dont get too wrapped up on people going off topic unless these are people starting a trend. If you spot deliberate trends in a negative fashion just report it to a mod and let them police the situation. If mods deem the situation ok, then it pretty much is and the problem is really not a problem.

One of the biggest headaches about when running a forum is when people start to do their own policing. Just enjoy the good, ignore the bad. As a simple member you have one huge advantage. You have no responsibily. Trust me you don't want it. =D

I know the OP did not intent the title to be funny, but "blows past 30fps" is funny :)

Kind of like, "blowing" past 55mph ;)

I have to say that I agree with tmaxey in that there are far too many threads getting overtaken by FPS talk. There are enough threads on it for the topic not to take over EVERY thread. That is very understandable. Post on the topic at hand and stop hijacking threads.

Uhm...they did (well, not everyone, but some did)

Anyway, this is about staying on-topic, and I couldn't agree more; however, as has been pointed out, it's exceedingly rare.

This is pretty funny: "blowing past 55mpg" hehehe. No, the thread title wasn't intended to be funny.

Mebbe I should have said HTC EVO with 70% 2d graphics improvement???

Even if there wasn't a big difference between 30 and 60fps (and there is), that does NOT excuse HTC's behavior and their downright lies about the issue.

I am keeping my evo because I have faith in the xda developers, but I am NEVER buying an HTC phone again.

And I laugh when I see these internet sooth-sayers claiming that 30fps is fine. Its stockholm-syndrome at its finest ;)

This is what I've been saying the very first week the EVO was released and I cannot stress this enough. When I made threads about this 30fps issue, people kept saying I was being a whiner or that the problem doesn't "exist".

Well it does exist, there are videos, HTC recognizing the problem, and the good people over at XDA trying to fix the problem, yet EVO elitists still refuse to accept it as truth. Its fine if you're happy with your EVO, but there are people who are unhappy with the performance.

I'm sorry, but if I paid $200 for a phone and $2000+ for a 2 year contract, I'm allowed to complain, and so should every EVO owner here.

While it may be true that most consumers who are just Joe schmoes wouldn't know the difference, its about principle. If HTC feels like no one cares, what's gonna stop them from pulling the same stunt again? Expect to have another feature gimped on their next flagship phone.

Here is proof that HTC is notorious for pulling stunts like this and the EVO is a perfect example of HTC still doing it.

HTCClassAction.org - Because HTC dropped the ball, and it's about time they pick it up!

Bend over if you like, but me personally I'm going to spend my hard earned cash on other devices that aren't intentionally handicapped.

Look on the bright side- Consumers were vocal about the problem and HTC & Sprint responded. If you were all complacent like some the lame a55 fanboys wanted you all to be- it would NOT have been looked at for update. Notice I did not say "fixed", because they shipped it that way on purpose.

Complacent fanboys should buy iPhones and bow to the king of all rubes: Mr. Jobs :) ;)

FWIW: The XDA team released a few new toys for the FPS hack.

1) Command line switching of register values to flip "turbo mode" on or off.
This is important because it enables on-the-fly adjustment of FPS. With this capability, it would be *easy* to recognize an HDMI connection and throttling to 30fps to ensure good video quality for HDMI out.

2) Turbo Widget. With the flick of a button, fps can be adjusted up or down.

At this point, there's no real reason to believe HTC cannot bake this in to their stock ROM. So far, the only legit argument they've produced has to do with video quality over HDMI @ > 30fps. The ability to toggle fps rate allows for real-time control and downsampling for HDMI.

Of course, none of this matters until HTC releases the kernel source so the devs can ensure cameras work, or unless HTC embraces what XDA has developed and incorporates into an OTA.

The guys over at XDA really are wizards. This is really nice to know that the EVO is capable of this. We just need HTC to release their kernal and come on board with this fix. There's no reason for the public to fix this issue for free on HTC's behalf.

great videos jmxp69, i appreciate them

You're very welcome. I'm glad you found them useful.

I agree HTC can do better, but this is the nature of opensource. The beauty of it is the developer community can make it better. One of my favorite tweaks is enabling 802.11n within a week or two of release. Why HTC didn't do that out of the gate I don't know, but the devs cracked it fast and our phones gain access to more access points as a result.

Anyway, your point is understood...

Great News!

HTC released the kernel source and the XDA devs have already released a 30fps workaround with working cameras!

AFAIK they are still using the dirty hack and I haven't had the time to check battery life, but you can download the t2v5 kernel here.

Thanks to the XDA gurus, we now have a phone working much more like it should. Now the tweaking will begin and we'll have a phone that can compete with the N1.

For the record:

- I flashed a completely stock 1.47 build and the t2v5 kernel.
- You will have to downgrade 802.11 from wireless N to wireless G only.
- Everything else I've tested works fine namely the cameras and the charging led which were both broke in the prior t2 kernels.

Of course, you have to have root to do this.

Others have said this, but your videos are very informative jmxp69. It's interesting to see all of the side by side comparisons, and the professional tone you maintain when explaining things.

Keep posting stuff. I'm reading.
