Root Complete Guide: Root, unrEVOked, Titanium, Tether, Nandroid, AdFree, animation, and remove apps

Followed everything to the T and it worked great! The only issue I have is that instructions for installing the hboot files are a little off.

It says: "The unrEVOked3 recovery tool comes with the phone drivers you will need to use. They are in the directory hboot driver_files. Unrevoked has a great walk through for installing the drivers."

But, the unrevoked instructions for installing the phone drivers do not involve any files in the "hboot driver_files" directory. You have to download a .zip file that's called out in their walk through.

I would look into updating this part of the guide.

I had to download the zip from unrevoked as well. I couldn't find them in the recover tool folders.

Nice job man. The updates have really made this the place to go to clear up the majority of the usual suspect issues. Keep it up.

A must read for rooted noobs.

Super easy to follow instructions. Many thanks to the unrEVOked team for this 'one click' root. Thanks for making this sticky.

Thanks for the unroot guide... I am ready for the 2.2 update (and now that I am ready for it, it won't be here until Dec)

So, I'm finally going to take the plunge, after gearing up to do it then chickening out. I have the reflash package from unrevoked, but do I need to do the Android.sdk step on John's page, or will unrevoked handle everything for me? I assumed I had to do the .sdk first, then use the reflash which will do everything else for me, but then I see everyone talking about how they rooted in one click and I pause. I just don't want to brick the phone and end up stuck with an Eris or something.

You don't need the sdk to root - unrEVOked will take care of that all on its own (so long as you got the driver setup correctly public:windows_hboot_driver_install [RootWiki])

You use the sdk to do other things, like remove unwanted software, get AdFree working, or reboot the phone into recovery mode by simply typing "adb reboot recovery." No more holding down buttons while turning on the phone :D

I wish I could thank you twice. This is a really nice guide. Re: Unrevoked 3, I deleted htc sync and make sure I was enabling 'charge only' when I plugged into the computer in order to get root to work.

Had some trouble with AdFree, and still don't have it set up. Oh well. got cyanogenmod running. I'm exhausted.

after following all the directions, I did get my startup screen to display the DROID X Eye, but when adding the sound it caused my startup screen to go blank now on startup.
I have tried several more times and am failing to get the EYE to appear (not so much worried about the sound *although it would be nice*)
So, my question, how do I delete what is in that pushed folder (data\local) to reinstall, or, how do I make this right with picture and/or sound.

************* Boot animation

Custom boot animations can range from geeky to cool and are easy to install.

Geeky Boot Animation
Download the animation you want to use. Rename the file to bootanimation.zip. The only files in the zip file should be part0 and part1 directories and a desc.txt file.
Put the bootanimation.zip file into your tools directory (c:\sdk\tools)
Reboot the phone into recovery (adb reboot recovery)
Using the clockworkmod recovery menu on the phone mount /data
use the command adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local (You can also put the file on your sdcard and use the command mv /sdcard/bootanimation.zip /data/local/)
Reboot
If you want the sound file that goes along with the

not sure what I did, but I DID get the Droid X Eye now on the startup screen....just need to now get the DROID Sound working with it.
thanks guys

Jonathan,

have you tried the new stock Froyo leak?

If so will you be typing up a guide on how to install it? The thread at xda is too large to go through and find every fix for every problem......

my DINC is unrooted on 2.1. Never rooted before so I'm a little apprehensive as I don't want to mess something up and end up bricking the phone.

I tired the Froyo Leak and didn't have any troubles. I returned to stock, applied the OTA radio, rooted, wiped, installed ROM, restored apps via titanium. Everything worked well for me.

I've since reinstalled the RUU to downgrade my radio back to 1.0 and am running 2.1 for the time being. I'm waiting for ROM based off the released OTA.

Thanks to Jon and the fellers over at unrEVOked, I am now rooted. Did it on Mac OS X Leopard.

The only issues I ran into were my own fault. I either completely missed the part where you're supposed to set it to charge only or it just wasn't there because it's common sense and i'm an idiot. Who knows? Anyway... Titanium and AdFree weren't doing what they were supposed to because it was in disk drive mode. I figured that out after unplugging and trying again (on a whim). Now all is well. Thanks again.

Jon I'm rooting now...doing a nandroid backup at the moment. Big thanks to you and Unrevoked. Your guide is great. I'm just gonna run rooted 2.1 as you're doing and wait for a stable 2.2 ROM based off the OTA.
