Captivate Free at WalMart

With At&T you have 30 days to decide if you want to keep it. But, I will say the one time I have returned a device, it took them 3 months to credit my account, it did happen, but it still had $450 in limbo forever.

Then you would have to reorder it online from Let's talk directly or through the Wal-Mart link. You could also walk into a Wal-Mart if you can find them in stock and get them for $148. Last, you might want to try and call At&t and ask if they will refund some of your money. If they know what you are about to do, they might be more willing to give you some of your money back rather than loosing it all. You would probably need to talk to a supervisor or the retention department.

Ps. when I just went through the order process on Letstalk, it gave me the first one free and the second for $199, so apparently you can't get them both for free or even discounted on the family plan.

Hey thanks!

Honestly if I were to decide to go through with the nightmare of returning mine, having the wife return hers, and all that, I'd definitely have her order hers separately, so I think that would likely work out. And I'm not worried about that 3-months for account credit...they've not dealt with my wife before. (ha!)

Anyway, I think the biggest part of my question is more about the contract...if I try to take advantage of the free offer, they are going to want me to sign a new 2-year contract (which I don't mind really). But, since I just signed one yesterday...do you know how that would play out? Would I have to find a way out of the newly-signed contract so that I could sign a new one via Livetalk/walmart/etc?

I'm not convinced I'm going to do this either way...lots of work, including the $35 re-shelving fee each (which I'm not sure we would pay), for a phone I've already got in my hands. Still...$400 buys a lot of accessories! lol

I called in, and my order was canceled. No surprise there I guess. They asked if I wanted to order a new phone, and I said "No, I will just go to Best Buy". We shall see what happens next. This phone better be worth it after all of this, haha

Only had one for 24 hrs but I think your work is worthwhile. My last phone wasn't a smartphone/android/etc. (I had a Samsung Eternity), so not really much to compare it to, but it seems to work great! There's always tiny little things that I would change, but these are minor compared to the real features.

Thanks that's definitely good to hear. I ended up speaking with Customer Service at AT&T, and they told me to go to back into a store to see if they could get me the $350 price. Still going to shoot for Best Buy first to see if they can do the $229 price though.

First, when you return the phones, AT&T has to reset your "renewal date", second, from what I can see on Letstalk, you can only get 1 for free, so you really only need to return 1 not both. You might still trying calling At&t and ask if they would just refund you the $165 (difference of free plus restocking fee) since you got 2 phones, but I would guess your chances aren't going to be good.

Unfortunately, I don't qualify for their w/ contract price. I already upgraded 13 months ago and my plan is only $90 per month. But AT&T is letting me upgrade early.

Just do it anyway.

I called LetsTalk.com and told them AT&T is letting me upgrade early. They insisted that they can't let me purchase the phone with a contract. They checked with AT&T and said my contract expires in April of next year. I said, "But AT&T is letting me upgrade." He said, "They own the contract and they can do whatever they want."

I went on letstalk.com and simply proceeded with the process to purchase the Captivate phone with a contract just for the heck of it, and guess what? It worked. They just emailed me a UPS tracking number and AT&T emailed me saying my account has been updated. And the overnight shipping was free.

so will this work for me?? i am part of a family plan and my sister is the main line and she can upgrade but the contract still ends feb 2011, my dad is part of our plan and his contract is up for his line, but he is not the main line in the plan, so if i want to get the phone for free how should i do it?? upgrade form my sister or dad.

I am a non main line of the family plan contract. All of our contracts were going to run out September 2011. According to AT&T the main line of the contract is eligible for upgrade sooner than others, and how soon depends on how expensive a plan you have. Since we have the cheapest family plan, my wife's line becomes eligible in May 2010. The secondary lines become eligible for upgrade after 22 months of contract. I ended up doing an early upgrade by paying a $75 premium over the $199 price. Since my wife gets a discount due to her employer having an agreement with AT&T, there plans are always going to be cheaper for us, and having been locked in a new 24 month contract from today's date with AT&T is not an issue for me. All of the other resellers and non corporate stores said that I could not do an early upgrade with them. Only AT&T corporate store can do that for you. This was a better option for me than having to hunt all over town for a store that would ring it free and clear for $350.

Sorry, but I'm confused. I am due for an upgrade, but I'm not the primary line. So how do I get around paying full price for it? Do I have to create a new plan for minutes or just add the data plan?

It won't work if you arn't the primary line. I wasn't so my wife called att and got me switch to it. Then i just grandfathered my iphone data plan.

I had decided I would get my wife and I Captivates if/when I could get them for $50 each on contract, so when I saw that I could get one free and one for $100 through letstalk.com on Sunday night I went for it. I had to play around with the different voice and data plans to try and figure out where the price breaks were, and we're going to have a serious increase in our monthly bill at first (can't wait for day 182 to switch back to our old plan). Out for delivery now, so we'll see what they're like this evening :)

I just got a email from letstalk saying my return was received for the phone that was never shipped to me. Doesn't look like anyone is actually getting their off contract phones.

You were the only one on the thread that even got to shipped status. Everyone else either got put on hold forever, got an email cancellation, or were offered to get it at $499 or free with a new 2-year contract. By the way the price on the 2-year contract has been bumped up today to $99 by LetsTalk (but the free deal was genuine for the 2 days it ran) and Captivate is their #1 selling smartphone. I wonder if the #1 stats include the infamous Sunday morning off-contract orders?

I ordered from Letstalk on Sunday. I had to give up my unlimited data for a 2Gb plan, and increase my family plan from 550 to 700 minutes. No biggee, either one.

UPS tracking says it is on the truck, so I should have it tonight.

I guess I won't be watching any TV tonight.:)

Why u have to give up unlimited plan dont u get grandfathered over to ur new contract?

I am getting ready to purchase this phone and I came across this free deal. I called CS and they told me I would not be able to use my current voice plan with ATT (grandfathered in from Cingular), I'd have to sign up for an equivalent plan that's $20 more. Also it's through a different company than Walmart and I believe they have an additional penalty if you decide to break the contract, ATT is already $300. There might also be warranty issues, not sure that the ATT store can take care of problems if it's not an insurance issue, might have to go through this company to replace phone. They seem legitimate but might not be worth the risk. I stopped in Walmart today, they just got the phone this morning, $148 for new contract or renewal, $199 at ATT Store. No obligation to Walmart, just ATT.

Just got of the phone with a CSR from Wal-mart Wireless. They couldn't give me the $229 price but they offered to give me a $100 discount from the $499 price plus a free car charger and free overnight shipping. I figured some AT&T stores wont ever sell me the phone unless I add a data plan to my line so I took the offer. At the moment, I basically have a voice line and use a JB iphone now.

If you paid 399+ tax then thats not a bad deal for the phone only...I might have pushed for 350 and regular shipping though ;).....

They said that was only through AT&T directly, not with them. They had it on the order form, but claimed it was a mistake.
Once you got the device and it works, I would contact AT&T and see about restoring your unlimited data(if you want it) and reducing your plan. You shouldn't have had to buy more minutes just to get the device, unless there is some really weird wording in the Letstalk deal that requires you to carry a plan above $50 or something.

The agreement with Letstalk stipulates that you have to keep the level of service you sign up for when you get the phone for 181 days or you face a fee of $250 IIRC. I've read elsewhere that these internet companies that sell the phones cheaper than AT&T earn their money if the new customer keeps a certain level of service for 6 months. I played with their site extensively before ordering and switching from, say, 700 minutes on the family plan to 1400 minutes on the family plan would make the second phone go from $200 to $100, while changing from the 2GB data plan to the 200MB data plan generally added $50 to the phone that you had adjusted.

This was all as of Sunday night, and I saw this morning that their pricing had changed already, so the numbers might not be accurate today but the general idea should still apply.

Yeah, I tried to get the $350 but was told that wasn't possible. Yup, I didnt think of asking for regular shipping. I did ask for a car charger which she said was OK after putting me on hold for a couple of minutes.

What I did find strange was the identity verification. The 4 questions they asked me where like the question I was asked when I pulled my annual credit report. I purchased the phone without a contract so why would they even care about my credit history. And how did they come up with the personal questions they asked me?

I thought I would let people know that my BestBuy in Orlando honored the price match. I got the Captivate for $99 when I showed them a print of Walmarts $99 price. Here is my receipt to prove it.
