Okay thanks will have to try this in the morning. I'm a Mac user so I'll be having to borrow my parents Windows laptop. It's an absolute pain. Is there a way for me to back up my phone stuff on my Mac? (As I presume this .6 update will wipe my phone)
I'm a Mac user like you with only occasional access to a Windows PC. The easiest way to backup your phone - is on the phone! Install the 'MyBackup' app from the market (the free version with 30 day trial) and backup whatever you want - apps/data or both. More info on the app here: RerWare Android™ Products: MyBackup Pro (backup Android, Nexus One, Motorola Droid, G1, Hero, MyTouch, etc...), MyBookmarks
It'll copy everything to your SD card, then after you've updated to the latest ROM, reinstall the MyBackup app from the market, hit 'Restore' and it'll bring everything back for you. I did this last night after facing the same situation as you and it all worked fine.

nearly 12 noon now.. Fingers Crossed
