Help way too easy to call 911

on the moment you do not have to dial it. you dont have to do anything but press the button.

That is dangerous. Didn't samsung ever hear of butt dialing?

I think the Instinct had a similar problem. I used to have the Instinct and I remember there being an emergency call button too, but many people complained and they fixed it with an update. I can't find the emergency button any longer on my old Instinct.

It's a little annoying when people make blanket comments without actually understanding the issue. The emergency dial issue on the moment is REAL and ANNOYING. Almost as annoying as some peoples (persons) response to this thread.

Besides Lock 2.0, is there any other 'fix' that has been discovered? Disabling the lock is not a possiblity for me.

so you let other people read your emails, sms, etc...?

I used to have an ex gf that did that. That's why she is an ex.

As for the thief thing. Doesn't Android have a feature like my WinMo 5 system did that lets you set a password that master resets the phone if sent in a text message?

first point its not dangerous at all just a stupid move to put button there. Another thing if you are putting your phone in back pocket and its that tight you will have more problems then just hitting one button over time you will damage the screen with all the pressure( that info is from someone who works with samsung and another from sprint).

Next point I had instinct since day one and lock that thing 3000 times with different thing and never did I have a call button anywhere on it.

Actually is is dangerous because if someone is responding to a random 911 call that was accidentally dialed they're not responding to a real call. Plus it ties up a 911 operator. So at the very least it is irresponsible and at most it is dangerous. And here in Vegas, we often get the busy signal when dialing 911 as we just don't have enough dispatch operators to handle the call volume.

In Vegas if there is a 911 call and no one talks, they send out police, fire, and ambulance as they are not sure what is going on or if the person is in too much danger to talk or if they passed out and cannot talk. They don't take chances here. NY is much bigger and perhaps that is why they don't take action right away.

I have to agree with the OP. In the first week with the lock pattern enabled I accidentally dialed 911 three times. I thought I had cancelled the call before it was placed each time but I don't believe that was the case. The 3rd time it occurred I received a call back asking if everything was OK.

I have decided I cannot use the lock pattern until this is corrected to prevent more accidental emergency calls.

called 911 again today while using the phone (shoulder to ear) it would seem that the proximity sensor only works when it wants to

I also made 6-7 pocket dials within the first week of getting the phone - caught most but not all before a connection was made...very eerie to hear a 911 operator in your pocket on speakerphone asking you what the emergency is. Apparently since this feature has been mandated on mobiles - it happens...

Keeping the phone in your pocket screen side out (facing away from your body) makes it much more difficult to pocket dial.

Since the touchscreen is capacitative - your leg/butt/whatever can push the right sequence to dial...unless you are bumping and grinding with someone who is rubbing against the screen - your odds go down significantly. I haven't had one issue since adopting this pocket strategy. I apparently don't do enough bumping and grinding.

I do agree, the design sucks and it's way too easy. Hopefully 1.6 or 2.0 will fix it.

I use an iPhone case with my Samsung Moment, it fits like a glove.

With the case, I have never had a problem dialing 911.

Dialing 911 with the emergency button should require a gesture, like having to slide the button up/down/left/right or maybe making a circle. Would stop the pocket dials.

just dialed 911 running up some stairs - I even have the screen lock on - this really stinks
It's doing that because of the lock screen. Disable the lock screen and you will be ok (as far as dialing 911 goes). If you can't or don't disable the lock screen... you are just in the same boat as myself, and everyone else contributing to this thread:( It seems that those two options, and the app 'Lock 2.0' are the only options.

Ok after using the Android lock for 3 days, I have yet to dial 911. I'm not quite understanding how people are dialing 911...

I am careful with the screen swipe, and deliberate when I swipe. I'm wondering how people are swiping, and if they are not paying attention when swiping...

Got the moment on Friday, was initiated into the 'accidentally called 911' club tonight. I've been extra cautious when waking the phone up, but this time I slid the keyboard open to do so, and my thumb must have hit that button. This needs to be addressed ASAP. From dark screen to dialing 911 needs to require at least one more button push or confirmation.

ok i thought the phone had a capacitive screen? being capacitive it shouldnt press the screen in your pocket right? or are you guys doing it when you are unlocking it with your hands?

I think your right as my screen won't react to anything but my finger tip. Not even my nail. But I would like to say that I feel comforted knowing that if there is an emergency I'm a click faster than anybody around me to get help in the area.
