Thanks for the heads up alien. Kamots, you have had a tough road with this root thing. I referred Kamot to EU1's method because he could not get his PC to recognize the phone. I thought that EU's method was perfect for such a situation. If you stick to that thread Kamlots, you wll be in very capable hands. I don't bash one's grammar, but I honestly had a difficult time understanding what you were looking to do.

lol yeah sorry about the grammar thing turns out you shouldn't type while your angry, things get rushed and the brain was moving faster than the fingers lol. I ended up having a fried usb port so the phone would not charge, or turn on because the battery was dead. After several conversations with verizon reps on the phone and in person , it became apparent that verizon was unwilling to help me with the situation and wanted me to pay $169 for a refurbished eris ( which to me means it had already broken once) and the phone only cost $99 to begin with. so that was unacceptable to me. I ended up going to At& t and getting the samsung captivate, which is an amazing phone. Im not diggin At&t but....... I do miss my eris. I know that this has gotten long winded, but I just wanted to thank everyone that was helping me through that whole root ordeal. I greatly appreciate your time and efforts you all rock!:D

Welcome to the dark side! haha jk, i'm glad you got everything figured out :)

Okay, I'm back with some very newbie questions that I haven't been able to find answers to after browsing the board for the last two hours. I'm sure they exit... I just can't find them. Thanks for your patience in advance.

1. Nandroid backup - how do I do it? Is this native to the phone? Do I need to download something from the market? My ability to download things seems to be nonexistent right now, so that could be problematic.

2.I followed the initial instructions to root my phone, and think it was pretty successful. However, I want to change roms and my new tentative choice (xtrSENSE3.1) requires my SD card have the amon_ra recovery partition. I'm pretty sure it already has this as a part of the rooting process - can someone confirm?

busybee,

1. The Nandroid backup is done by launching custom recovery. For Amon_RA's custom recovery, you select "Backup/Restore" from the main menu and then select "Nand Backup". View this post http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html#post1186824 for information on how to launch into recovery and visuals for taking a Nandroid backup.

2. If you did get a custom recovery installed, then you would place new your custom ROM in the top-level of your /sdcard, launch into custom recovery, make your Nandroid backup (always a good idea before flashing a new ROM), do the wipes per the developer's ROM thread / instructions, and then select "Flash zip from sdcard" from the main menu to select and flash your custom ROM, and then reboot your phone (return to the main menu and select "Reboot system now"). The same link above (i.e., answer #1) also has these visuals.

You can also use the same instructions in this thread (OP #1 http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/125436-detailed-leak-root-tutorial.html#post1166479) and for MAC/LINUX, the above is step #10; for Windows, its step #10 and #11.

edit: removed my prior "cautions" since busybee has read this post (and hopefully trident's thread)

I would like to do this root method but I would have to wipe my phone. I noticed the warning about how posted in the sticky about wiping your phone and how it is killing 3g capability would this happen when I wiped to root? Also I saw the alternative that was posted where you wouldn't have to do a factory reset but that way seems to complicated for me right now.I also want custom roms. So can I root or will wiping my phone during root process kill my 3g capability? Sorry for the long post.

I have seen a fair amount of debate about how accurate the rumor is. Since I saw the rumor, I personally have wiped my phone 4 times to install a different ROM and never once lost 3G.

Also, I found the rumor somewhat amusing because it said the only Verizon phone that was "Safe" was the Motorola Devour which in my opinion is an utter piece of crap. EVERY person I know that has a Devour absolutely hates cuz the phones have numerous and repeated hardware failures. Thus I find it suspicious that it's the one "safe" phone. Sounds almost as though someones trying to dump all the Devours they can,,,

Not a long post at all :). And I think various posts by erisuser1 also have allayed any fears of losing 3G.

You can root and keep all of your current settings. There's a few ways to do this, one easy way is this: http://androidforums.com/all-things...is-app-apk-no-pcs-no-scripts-needed-easy.html (when you get to the step 4, just flash rootme.zip and don't flash a custom ROM).

There's other ways to root without losing your current setup. You main goal is to install a custom recovery partition and then you have options. You can then either flash something that gives you root access (like the above tool does), or follow one of the other methods and stop just short of installing a custom ROM and flash somethings called "engtools3.zip" (which happens to have also been put together by jcase who authored the about 1-click method above).

But custom ROMs are also pretty cool too.

Let us know if you have additional questions.

P.S. my post was longer than your post  :D ;)

Did you completely finish step #6 where you change to the Android SDK "tools" directory?

6. To open a command window in the tools directory:

[VISTA and WIN7] Navigate to your Android-sdk-Windows folder and open the Tools folder. Find a blank spot in the window and hold down the shift key + right mouse click. Choose the option, “Open Command Window Here.”

[XP] Click Start>Run and type "cmd". This will bring up a command window and from there type "cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools"

yeah im on windows vista but when i hit shift and right clicked i didnt get an option to pull up a command promp to i did it the way that was suggested for xp and was able to get into android-sdk-windows\tools and was able to get my device noticed as an adb device.

If you do a "dir" command while in the Android SDK's tools directory (i.e., from the Command Prompt), do you see the "runindos.bat" file in the list of files presented? (i.e., are you sure that you extracted the contents of the hack-v4.zip into the "tools" directory?)

ok sweet i got root and am now on tazz but i dont know how to get the market downloaded so i can get some apps. Any suggestions?

There is a file you need to download and flash that has it on there
Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!
:eek::eek::eek:

Is that the Market fix patch? If so, that might fix akillys (but you might also want to point / link to the source and/or reference of this file so folks will have a better comfort-level about the source of the file).

edit: I clicked on the above link and it shows "gapps-frf91-desirec-signed.zip" and found a few references to this in the tazz thread on XDA...I do wonder though if tazz built this in to his latest version and maybe akillys would be better-off flashing the latest and greatest ROM.

Ok so I installed evil eris instead but my live wallpaper always goes back to thee standard wallpaper when my phone sleeps i have cyanogen tazz v5 still on my sd how do I flash the market fix once im on tazz again? Or could someone point me in the direction off cyanogen tazz v6

Don't know anything about LWP and still suggest you use v6.

Here's the same link for the dev's ROM thread I gave just a few posts up:

{ cyanogen tazz v6 update/8/6/10 \market\mms\a2sd\CM6/Froyo Edition - xda-developers

Ok I'm and idiot thats where I downloaded my v5 I totally missed that. Thanks for helping me get root and thanks for being patient with me scary alien also thanks to driverx125

I am using this rom right know and it is really fast. After you charge the battery to 100% go into recovery the wipe then wipe battery stats. Then use the phone with normal use then charge. Then you can use to battery indicator.
