Root Best ROM to flash for a first timer?

Easiest way to backup apps is using a file manager (ASTRO). Hit menu/tools/backup and you should be able to navigate from there.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but restoring apps this way will not be "registered" in the Market and when those apps get updated, you won't be notified.

I'm pretty sure this is correct. I installed SetCPU through Astro and it doesn't show up in the Market, I'd assume the same applies when backing up through Astro.

I've been running GRDLOCK's Vanilla Droid for over a month. It's stable, but I'm a little bored with it O:) If I flashed Ivan's 1.0 ROM and wanted to use the wireless tethering, would I have to have to go to the \tools\ directory of my SDK, run "adb shell", and then "su" to get the tethering to work? Just curious - I'm away from my main computer for a couple weeks.

I'm also contemplating Evil Eris 2.1. Any thoughts on which ROM (Evil Eris 2.1 or Ivan's 1.0) is best for stability & speed? Thanks!

I never had to do anything like that... yiou should get the su permission on the phone. allow it and should be good to go, thats how i did it.

if i install Ivan's and dont really like root, can i go back to 2.1 OTA?

ya.
theres a few options.
1. unroot and go back to total stock
2. flash plain jane <---its based off the OTA. its the OTA with root
3. flash smash rom or plain jane2 by t2noob. they are both stcok with some different rooting aspects.

Ivanmmj's Official 1.0 is effectively identical to OTA2.1.

Having root doesn't force you into new habits - it's a capability that sits there on the sidelines... You get to decide whether to use it, or leave it sitting on the sidelines.

Other than two programs which you are free to neglect, I don't know how you would notice a difference between the two.

Oh, wait a minute, yes I do: the stock version will be slooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwww. ;)

Root is like this:
Your computer at work - Not rooted, you can't mess with it, the IT department (Verizon) may have disabled stuff that you want. You can only install what the IT department (Verizon) allows you to have.

Your home computer - Rooted, you can mess with anything and install anything.

who lives in LA that would want to root my phone for me? im too tech-re+arded and impatient that i KNOW i will eff it the hell up!

if you want something super fast and everything works great you should flash ic3[ROM] [5/11/10] Ic3Rom v2.0 [Overclocked - Apps2SD - Crazy Fast] - xda-developers vut it dosen't have sense or live wallpapers (both are un-necessary) so if you really need both of those just try a different one like aloysius [ROM] Aloysius 2.0 PORT V11 with OC, Friendstream and APP2SD (5/11/10) - xda-developers

there are other really cool roms out there aswell like the cynogen mod rom that just got ported... i think it is called white wash or something... here is the link: {ROM}White Widow_v1.2{ROM}(5-24)Newest CyanogenMod/JIT/LWP/New A2SD/MMS Fix - xda-developers

Ok so I have a question for you awesome folks over in Eris land. I'm an Incredible user, but my girlfriend has an Eris and is having issues with the speed of the device, so I told her that I would look into rooting/rom flashing for her.

So here are a few questions for you all.

1. If I flash Ic3ROM, which sounds like the most basic/stable/fast ROM option, will I need to manually set the overclock with SetCPU or does the ROM flash with an already overclocked kernel?

2. If I do need to manually set it with SetCPU, what settings would you recommend? (Battery life isn't an issue. She's got the Seidio 3500mAh).

3. Can JIT be enabled on the Eris once the ROM is flashed?

Sorry if these are noob questions. I'm fairly new to android, and am in the processing of flashing my first rom ever on my Incredible. Thanks for any help.

1. The OC is built into the kernel but you will have to manually throttle it with setCPU.

2. from the reports I've seen, 710 seems to be where you want to start from. Try that and see how stable things run. Then you can throttle it up incrementally from there and see how high you can get it without the phone locking up. Just be careful and set the profiles up correctly. Throttle things back when you put the phone to sleep and make sure you set the failsafe to throttle waaayyy down if you phone gets past a certain temperature (don't want to fry your phone!)

3. Jit has had mixed reviews. For some, its totally stable and everything runs like a dream. For others it completely cripples the phone until its removed. For me personally its not worth messing with.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I'm not very familiar with SetCPU. Can you recommend somewhere to get some info on how to use it or is it pretty self-explanatory? Also, does the OC kernel come with the ROM or is it a separate install?

One other question while I'm at it. What's the stock processor speed on the Eris?

Its pretty self explanatory. You just move the slider to the left or right and it shows you the clock speed you're selecting. same as setting up the profiles.

Cool. Thanks again.

Now I'm concerned, though. I just saw something about not being able to root if you installed one of the leaked 2.1 updates?

Is that still true? I updated her phone a while back when the 2.1 leaks first hit. Is there any way to revert to stock and root from there or some other method to get root?

Asterdroid,

Just to catch-up on a few of your questions from above. I think the stock clock speed for the Eris is 528MHz. Overclocking at 710MHz seems to be the safe sweet-spot.

JIT, at this point on the Eris, doesn't seem to make much beside the Linpack performance metric app run much faster.

Here's a good thread on overclocking and setCPU: http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/98457-overclocking-hmm.html

Those with 2.1 leaks are having a heck of a time rooting...a handful (about 26 confirmed/reported per the XDA thread [Tutorial] Root for LEAKERS 7/4/10 - xda-developers) have done it. Its a very tricky, timing-sensitive process. If you've leaked, you can't really revert back to stock to get root (the devs have tried countless methods...its been one of the hardest Android phones to crack for root).

So, until the process gets a little easier, or, you are brave / persistent / patient enough to try the leak-root process, you probably won't be able to root a leaked Eris. :(

Cheers!

Damn. Sounds like I have quite a project ahead of me. This is what I get for jumping on 2.1 too soon. Sorry I'm so uninformed. I am always over in the Incredible forum. Thanks for your help.

Just an aside, your avatar is one of the few that made me laugh..

.. can you tell me what it is from?

If it's you.. well, congratulations on being very imaginative.

Sadly, it's not me. He's a British performance artist named Mark McGowan. Does some pretty crazy stuff. A couple years ago he ate a plate of meatballs made from the meat of a dead Corgi as part of an animal cruelty protest. He's a strange one.

Not sure where the hangup is... recently rooted, did the double wipe (data/factory reset, cache) and flashed the Eris_Official_0.8.1T2 rom, can access SetCPU but it's maxed out at 528Mhz? Have access to wifi tether etc so I know that the root is good and that the rom I'm using is in place... what gives?

Also, what's the best (read: easiest) recommended way to backup my apps so when I do another wipe/flash I won't have to re-download and install them again? Going through the necessary hoops to get the Swype beta back on my phone was a pain, hopefully there's a more streamlined and user friendly option?

Thanks in advance! :)

gridbug,

You really want Ivan's Eris Official 1.0 since it comes already overclocked to 710MHz (its kernel-locked at that speed). Its already got the wi-fi app and setCPU in the app drawer. This is the ROM that I have installed. Look in GrdLock's FTP site in Ivan's ROM's folder for the 1.0 ROM and grab that instead.

Also, even though 710MHz is a nice, safe, stable speed, you can flash Zanfur's overclocking patch/kernel to give you other o/c options.

I've heard that Titanium Backup Pro (paid) is a very good app to use for backing-up and re-installing your stuff. Search the threads for this and you'll file lots of good info.

TitaniumBackup Pro is very helpful if you switch roms. Worth the money for sure.

Thanks for the info, I'll fool around with the ROM you recommended... I checked out Titanium Backup as well... any major difference between the free and the Pro versions? Sorry for the goofy questions, I'm at work ATM and multitasking like a maniac!

:D

I think the Pro version of Titanium Backup will auto or one-click backup and restore all of your apps, whereas the free/lite version makes you do it one app at a time.
