Root Okay... how impact does Root have on Eris lag, really?

1. ALMOST no problems. When you flash ROMs, it essentially wipes out the previous ROM. However, the bigger problem is the SD card. If you use Apps2SD in 2.1, you need a Linux ext partition on the memory card. However, 2.2 does not work properly with this partition, since it uses the regular FAT32 partition for storing apps. So if you switch between, you might need to delete the old ext partition if you move to 2.2.

Okay... this part gives me some heartburn. I'm not sure how partition and all that. Frankly, I've heard a lot about Apps2SD, but I'm not sure what it is. Do I have to use it?

The two ROM's I'm most intriqued by are xtr 3.0.3 and KaosFroyo v29 or v30. The main reason I'd like to go to Froyo is to make my Eris a Hotspot. I don't think I can do that on xtr, right?

Sounds like I should dl Titanium Backup for all my setting and data. I'm assuming this thing is pretty intuitive?

Thanks for the help guys. I'm glad to see other non-rooters jumping on and getting some info out of this thread too.

One other thing, is there's Nand backup tutorial somewhere on the board here that has pretty pictures :D Looking for something like the Rooting for Dummies thread that EU1 put together. That thing is just awesome.

One option I haven't seen anyone mention is the 1 click eris root. You can get all the benefits of root while keeping the stock 2.1 ROM. I did this method becasue I really only wanted to OC and be able to use features such as wireless tether. My phone is super fast (710/604) and I still have the stock Eris look with the improvements I wanted. You can always switch to custom ROM's if you get bored with stock but I've been very happy with stock and having root. I'm having my cake and eating it too

Nandroid backup is the easiest thing you will ever do with your phone, there's no need for a pictorial.

Shut off phone
Once phone is off, hold volume up and power until you see the skateboarding droids
Scroll down to Backup/Restore, click on it
Select Nand Backup
Click trackball to confirm
After restore is complete, hit volume button to go back to original screen
Click Reboot

You now have succesfully made a Nandroid backup of your phone

I rooted my phone not too long ago after rarely dealing with some of the known HTC Sense problems (silent bug, lag, et al.). The first root was to xtrROM 3.0.3, and I am completely satisfied with my phone now. All of the problems are gone, as well as the bloatware, and Apps2SD was installed which helps keep my phone incredibly fast.

My wife went last night and upgraded her non-smartphone to a Motorola Droid X, which should be here soon. She asked if I was going to upgrade to an X at my next opportunity. I honestly don't think at this time that I will. Most of the new phones have faster processors and better cameras but are much larger than my Eris and too bulky for my tastes. Besides, after rooting and completely personalizing the phone, I really like it. More than any phone I EVER owned.

Worm, good to see you on the thread. I was following the other one you opened a couple weeks ago. Yours was the thread that really got me thinking about this. Thanks for chiming in. I hadn't actually considered rooting and keep the stock 2.1 ROM. I guess I should think about that. BTW, thanks for the instructions on nand backup!

Yes, I'd highly recommend Titanium Backup. In fact I'd recommend the paid version, it gives you 'batch' processing which means it will back up all your apps and data with one push. Otherwise you have to back up each one individually.

Keep in mind that you don't HAVE to use apps2sd, your phone is working now without it. I'd suggest not using it while you try the ROMs you've mentioned. When you find one you like you can then turn on the apps2sd. That way you don't have the problem of reformatting your card each time you change from a 2.1 ROM to a 2.2 ROM.

How do you overclock with stock OS when rooted. Did you download an app?

I like the sound of this a lot. Can somebody give me a quick explaination of Apps2SD, what it is, and why I'd want it? Thanks!

Apps2sd AKA a2sd is a way to store your applications on the SD card rather than in the phone's internal memory. The advantage to this is the ability to have many more apps on your phone without using up the memory that the phone needs to work.

Even after reading everything about rooting I still don't trust myself haha, someone just want to do it for me?! Hahaha, please???

I felt the same way until I read the Universal Root for Dummies method. (I permanently crashed a PC when I was taking a test for a PC-repair internship. The motherboard had to be replaced - it was that bad.) However, following the steps in that method, it was a breeze and only took me a few minutes.

after i rooted my Eris and OC'd and removed all the crap, the thing flew(well as fast as an Eris can fly). Its a small phone with a small processor, very entry level Android phone, but nevertheless, one of the best

I know how you feel, jumping elbow deep into your phone is an expensive sounding/intimidating idea.

But, unlike way back when, when I started learning comoputers, I have yet to even get so much as a hiccup on my phone when flashing.

Actually, I had one ROM bootloop on me. Not sure which one it was, but I just put a different one on my card, and used it instead.

Berra simble, berra easy

No Problem. This forum was extreemly helpful to me when I first got my Eris, the least I can do is try and pass on that knowledge to others who need it. I'd say take your time and be 110% that you want to root (voids your warranty) and pick a ROM that you feel very comfortable with. Good luck, keep us up to date

If you follow the 1 Click Eris Root App it's very easy and painless. It's literally a 5 minute process. If you want to overclock you will need to D/L setCPU from the market and d/l an O/C kernel from XDA. All in all this entire process takes less than 10 minutes.

And after you restart, optionally use a file explorer app like Astro or Root Explorer to go into your /nandroid/htcxxxxxxx folder to rename the latest backup from the standard BDS-yyyymmdd-hhmm (all UTC) to something else, like xtr.3.0.3-yyyymmdd-hhmm so you know which backup was which ROM, because you will try several. (Just don't leave any spaces on the name.)

By the way, the "htcxxxxx" above refers to some sort of unique identifying number for your phone - it will always be the same, unless you used the SD card with two different phones. And "yyyymmdd" is the date; today would be 20100821. "hhmm" is the time in 24 hour format. Also note that dates and times are UTC, so they will be several hours ahead (unless you magically made your Eris work in Europe or Asia.)

I still get (some) lag depending on what I do, but its a major improvement over stock, especially for just getting rid of the crapware.

**
Huge dialer lag, regardless of rom
huge lag when navigating/running pandora (still work fine, just take a second or two extra when doing menu options)
recently been having screen-on lag, which I've never gotten before. but either way, its a second or two difference in some apps, no big deal. for the form factor and build quality I'd still take the eris any day over the X.

Sorry for the newbie question. I have been cursing my phone about the lag. But if anything goes wrong will VZW null my warranty. Is there a step by step instructions to root it. Then which ROM should I use. Is there a place I go to get the downloads.

Mr eris is soooooo slllowww. Which you all can relate.

Thank you everyone !

I was about ready to throw my phone across the room because of the lag and associated issues... I was trying to make a phone call and could NOT get it to dial.

Rooted the next day and played with several of the ROMs (EvilEris is nice), and finally settled on KaosFroyo (v23, just updated to v30) and LauncherPro. I am in love with my phone all over again. I'm not even overclocking, just using the built-in overclock in Kaos. What a huge improvement.

Technically, yes, they could void the warranty. So long as you can run the RUU to install the stock 2.1 ROM, though, I cannot believe that they would ever be able to tell that the phone was rooted.

Also, I do not believe that anybody has ever reported that a rooted Eris with a hardware problem returned to Verizon was charged full price for returning a rooted phone. That said, technically, yes, you are doing something that invalidates your warranty. I have been running my phone rooted since late May/early June, and I have had absolutely no problems.
