LOL!! Well let's just say that I have been in phone hell for the past two weeks working/resetting/ tweeking/playing with my Fascinate! I have spent countless hours dealing with this thing and researching whether or not I should switch to the Droid X (which will be arriving to my house today or tomorrow)! I am serious, my husband is about to lock me up in the crazy house!! lol!
Most of the things that I was having problems with I was able to resolve....well after 3 factory resets and hours of "playing" with my phone. Note: I haven't rooted my phone since I just don't feel I have enough experience to do so unless I have someone walk me through it over the phone
- resolved audible alert of text mess while on voice call by using Handcent
- resolved intermittent audible voice mail alerts and MAJOR bugs with factory reset and resetting my vm on the verizon side (think we got this working ok)
- weird bugs such as loss of time and force close during one particular text message hopefully fixed with factory resets??
- my battery usage improved with factory reset?? np there!
-took off Buddies now since it was sssooo buggy for me!
Lately, it has been behaving (I'm holding my breath) except it....
-WILL NOT sync with my isp email acct.
-LAGS during typing text messages (drives me crazy) and when shuffling between home pages.
-my screen keeps getting brighter, then dimmer, then bright again - just seems random at times. I was reading an ebook last night and it kept changing. One question here......what was the concensus about which phone had the best screen for reading books from Kindle and such??
-google navigation did take time to load and I could barely hear it! Useless.
-I just hate the fact that I have been dealing with a very buggy phone!! Evertime I use the phone I'm waiting for it to Force Close or due something quirky. I just don't trust it! lol
I did get chance yesterday to try out my friends Droid X in real life (not tethered to a store display). I have to say I liked it, a lot, and I didn't even mind it being heavier and bulkier although I think the Fascinate "fits" me better. Things I liked better:
-liked the keyboard better/faster/more accurate. This is due to the keys being a bit larger due to screen size
-Loved the LED light on the front for notifications
-will provide an audible alert while on a voice call with stock sms package
-liked the camera button better
-liked the pop up indicators (at the bottom) for switching between home screens better
-seems to be more stable since many of the bugs have been worked out and now with 2.2 it is even better!
What I didn't like as much:
-didn't care for the hard keys compared to the Fascinates soft/touch keys. Not terrible, but just prefer the touch keys better. I feel you can move around faster with Fascinates keys. This is big for me.
-ergonomics, just a more square heavier phone. Unsure about the hump. On one hand I like it, it provides a resting place while on a call and a grip for pulling it out of your back pocket, on the other hand it added bulk. The weight too in some ways I liked, in other ways I didn't. I have cover on my Fascinate so that changes my comparison. The X was naked.
-I just felt the UI was easier on the eyes on the Fascinate. Fascinates screen is amazing (although not leaps and bounds better than the X) and the menus/icons/screens are just more colorful, sexier, slick ?? than the X. I feel as a first time Android user that the Fascinate provides an easier learning curve. I like the Home Keys (better on the Fascinate than the X.
Knock-knock...FedEx guy here with my new Droid X!!!! OMG! Now I got to decide (within the week)! Wish the X was activated so I could "play" with it in my real life then decide. Ahh! lol!
Well, I have gotten to spend some time with the Droid X the last day to get a little feel for it. The phone isn't activated, so I can't do a lot of things but I could access the settings, type a text, flip through the home screens and access the applications tray. Like I said earlier, it is a SUPER NICE phone and it really is making the decision very difficult. Splitting hairs here! But in the end, I am 90% certain that I am staying with the FASCINATE! Here is why:
- Form factor - Droid X is heavier and more bulky but overall not bad. HOWEVER, the phone kept slipping out of my hands while typing a text message. I had to keep adjusting my hands so I wouldn't drop it. Each time I adjusted the phone I had to stop texting. Possibly a cover would fix this but I found it troublesome. The hump on the X didn't bother me at all. As a matter of fact, I think I liked it as a "grip". In the end, the Fascinate fits perfectly and the ergonomics/form is just better, well better for me that is.
-Texting - Contrary to my first experience with the X at a friends house, I had a harder time texting on the X. This was a surprise to me! I am a female with a medium build. I have long fingers but I found the larger keyboard required me to stretch my fingers to reach the keys compared to the Fascinate. The space bar was a bit of a stretch for my right thumb so I kept putting in . for when I meant to space. I made far more mistakes on the X and found the experience "more work". This was a big discovery for me. I even asked my medium framed, med hands husband to try it and he reported the same. Nice keyboard, nice screen though. So, in the end, it just depends on the person and if you fit the X or if you fit the Fascinate. It is just important that your really spend some time prior to purchase trying it out if you text a lot. BTW, after turning of haptic and sound on my Fascinate keyboard, I don't notice ANY lag in typing. It was those two things that lagged, not the keyboard itself.
-Physical keys - However, the thing that probably was the biggest finding were the physical keys. I just found that they were more difficult to use, esp one handed. I did like the Home Key awake feature, but overall, I couldn't just reach down with my left thumb and press the keys I wanted easily. Guess since the phone is a tiny bit larger and heavier, this stretch was a little more difficult. I also didn't care for the amount of pressure I had to place to activate the keys. With the Fascinate you just tap and move along. Moving around the phone and using the touch keys seems to me just faster with the Fascinate (not on home screens which in my case lag). Yes, the keys on the Fascinate don't stay lit very long (hope that changes) but soon you learn where they are. Plus, like someone else mentioned, the keys clicking while I was playing on the X was a little annoying to my husband who was sitting next to me watching tv
- Responsiveness - I have to give this to the Droid X. I certainly could move across the home screens a bit quicker and easier on the X. Not sure if this is a bug with my Fascinate and I have not applied the lag fix (I'm not a super tech unfortunately, maybe in the future though), but I am hoping to get this corrected. Don't think everyone is having this problem. I was unable to check browsing with the X since I wasn't activated. Also, I do like the Applications Tray on the X better than the Fascinate (Techie terms??). I also like the poup tool to move between home screens better on the X. The Fascinate's dots at the top are just too hard to select.
-Screen - I also have to say that I really am torn about the two screens. Both are really really nice, just different. You just have to take a hard look at them and determine which works for you. If you plan on reading on your phone make sure you take a look at a downloaded book to help you make your decision.
-User Interface - The X is nice, more masculine looking coming out of the box. Think in this case I like the UI of the Fascinate. More colorful, user friendly feeling. Although, the systems are much the same. Torn here!
- LED notification light - X!
- Camera button - I prefer the X's physical key. I just don't care for the on screen camera button on the Fascinate. My 8yr had a hard time working with it while taking pictures at a school event the other day.
-Other notes - the email sync now works on my Fascinate - good! Using Handcent for SMS for on voice call notification. The reception on my Fascinate has been excellent! My Fascinate hasn't Forced Closed in days so good on that end. Changed my screen brightness to a set brightness instead of auto since it kept adjusting on me
In the end, both the Droid X and Fascinate are great phones! And now with 2.2 coming out for the X it might even be moreso the phone for you. For me, it all goes to form factor/ergonomics of the Fascinate that works better for me. It is slightly smaller, lighter, and has soft/touch keys. But like I said, it is a TOUGH decision. I keep taking the X out and playing with it and reviewing my previous findings.
Now none of this has to do with the techie side of the the X compared to the Fascinate. That is what you all do best. I'm just looking at things in the big picture. Possibly if my phone was rooted and the lag fix applied and things changed I would be married to my Fascinate completely. But, for now I don't have the skills to do that, so I gotta love it with the tweeking I can manage to do. Hope that all helps or at least gives folks looking at the things to consider.
Back to playing with each phone! Just one more time

Can I keep them both?! lol!
