OTA Update Starting today?

I've only read a few posts so far... but this is a funny thread. We're pretty much guaranteed to get the update within the next week. Based on the information so far, there are no real game-changing or earth shattering improvements.

Improvements to menu speed and battery life are very minor. The camera fix is permanent now, but earlier comments from Motorola engineers basically said that most droids already have functioning cameras prior to the update and the math error won't re-manifest itself for another week. Corporate Exchange fixes are nonexistent. Improved call quality will be nice, but it's not bad right now. The bluetooth fixes could be a noticeable improvement for the select few who use those features.

I would rather get my update in a few days than be one of the forced beta testers. Most of the discussion, calls to verizon, and arguing aren't worth anyone's time since the fix will be here in a matter of days and overall it's a very basic patch - definately worthy of its x.x.1 designation.

btw, you are not forced to be a beta tester, you have an option called "Install Later" on the notification.

Yeah, "forced" probably isn't the right word. The uninformed consumer that received the update option probably does not realize that they are only 1 of less than 2% of the user base. Typically such a small initial release would be classified as a beta or experimental release. If it was me, I would want to know that before I accepted the update - but Verizon isn't exactly spelling it out for consumers. So there are 10,000 people unknowingly testing out a patch for the remaining 600 - 800,000 owners.

Most people will just accept the update assuming that everyone else has it and that it has been thoroughly tested.

Do you have any data that states the update has been thoroughly tested or even not thoroughly tested?

I love the tone, and the fear without facts theme you are spreading :D

i actually got really excited when i first read this. after a couple minutes of reading i'm wondering why. not that big a deal at all but i'll download it when i see it.

If this update fixes reception issues, as reported by one person, it will be "HUGE" for some of us. Its the "only" reason why I cancelled my VZ acct...well that and I can't take my Droid outside the US and make a phone call.

I guess that's my point - we don't have any data that the update has been throughly tested. The fact (according to BGR) is it's an incremental release. 10,000 updates, then a two day wait before any more. That sounds like a test to me and many others. Why don't they just roll out the update to everyone at once like Sprint's last Hero OTA update?

So far it sounds like it is a solid patch. Verizon is probably just testing the water after other companies have completely bricked entire lines of their own devices with firmware updates in the last few weeks (WDTV Lives, Intel SSD's, among others).

Of course, I'm sure I'll jump in and accept the update as soon as it pops up on my droid... :D

I talked to Verizon this morning because I too had not received my update. Here is what Verizon told me this morning:

I can't believe you guys are pestering VZW for something that was earmarked by every major leak for the 11th and later leaked with every detail about the rollout. Do you think they really have nothing better to do than answer questions from impatient people who are losing sleep over an update they think is going to save the world? Come on people grow up. I can't imagine being a rep getting calls from kids saying "wa wa, I want my update I'm entitled to...Susie down the street got it and I didn't!...I want it NOW"

Entittled is my new favorite word.

Well you are just speculating, and drawing conclusions based on no facts.

What you are saying isn't far fetched though, but I'll bet that google has a very nice QA process, but no QA is flawless until it gets into the wild.

My SPECULATION is that VZ is testing the process to validate the Google work, not the the QA itself. And my speculation is probably deeper than anyone, unless they work for VZ Corp :)

I think someone mentioned that Engineers are pushing the update, it's my SPECULATION that Engineers have engineered the process, and the Operations type team is actually making the process viable and watching all the updates to make sure they work properly.

You guys are funny...you really think Google/Verizon would release an update to 10,000 customers that they hadn't fully tested and qualified?

It's not a beta, it's a completed incremental update to the Droid designed to fix a number of issue that Google and Verizon deemed important enough to include.

The fact that they are taking a measured approach to rolling it out is a good thing...I'm sure they expect that things will go smoothly, but starting with a "small" random sample is the right thing to do to ensure a good experience for their entire customer base in terms of managing their capability to deliver the update smoothly to tens and hundreds of thousands of customers.

Anyone who wants to can turn down the update, or delay taking it.

Sheesh...the amount of misinformation and general whining around here is just amazing to me.

Being that the droid is so new, we should make this our prerogative. I'm already trying, and I think I called you out once ;)

I like to call it the "voice of reason".

I'm with you on this one. Unless the update would fix a serious problem with your phone, like not receiving calls, then wait the 2 or 3 days and stop wasting the tech's time. I've had the Droid for 2 weeks now and I am happy with it and don't care if they don't update me until next year. I would rather wait a couple of weeks to see if there are bugs in 2.0.1.

Longing excessively for an update is logical and responsible behavior. :D

All software has bugs...therefore there are definitely bugs in 2.01. It's just a question of whether you want the buggy old software, or the buggy new software. ;)

So I was just thinking (I know, rare event) that the 9th arrives in just a few hours...I would think that folks should start getting update notifications at or around midnight tonight now that the ramp-up is starting as of the 9th.

You easterners will have to let us know if things start showing up...

Perhaps it will start up in the US around midnight EST? Another night of staying up waiting is ahead, I sense... but no work to do this time.

Just thought everyone should know, over on AllDroid.org they have succesfully rooted the Droid as well as posting the update.zip to update to 2.01. So, if you don't feel like waiting anymore, hop on over there. They even made the front page of Engadget.

how do u install it i have the zip file

EDIT: I couldn't resist:

I've got the zip, too. It looks like it's from the "normal" update site. Here's a copy and paste from the root thread on the other root site, and more info:

Rename the file to update.zip on your SD card
Power off the DROID and power back on while holding the X key
When you see a "/!\" symbol, press both vol+ and camera
Use the onscreen menu to install update.zip
Use the dpad to select the SD UPDATE.ZIP

Prey... I am right now.... It's almost done....

When it's done hit the Dpad button up top it says to hit it to reboot now.
Let us all know how it goes!
