Root ROOTING For Dummies

Just rooted my phone was pretty easy. Just step2 of section 2 i almost didnt follow because i didnt know if i was suppose to. lol

^^^^ Also, I will be using ROM manager to download Myn's. When I do this does it download to my SD card? Then go to step 4 in the flashing ROM section?

Thanks for the awesome guide. I just got a new EVO, and unfortunately it came loaded with 3.30. Any idea if there's been any progress on being able to root that version with unrEVOked ?

I have the phone rooted, am will try to apply Myn's.

Can I just apply Myn's without putting in a kernel?

You can apply Myn's without a kernel. The kernel that it comes with (HTC #10, I think?) works really well. Try it first for a couple of days before you flash a different kernel. This is the same advice I would give with any ROM.

Might I suggest downloading via your computer, then transferring to the root of your SD card? You are less likely to have a download error and it is recommended that the ROM be flashed from the root of the card, rather than a subfolder, anyways. I'm not saying what you are proposing won't work, just offering a suggestion. You can use ROM Manager, then, to install a ROM from your SD card.

^^^^ Before I apply Myn's, do I need to uninstall Launcher Pro?

No you do not.

A couple of other things, create a nandroid backup prior to installing a new ROM (you do this from the menu when you boot in to recovery), be sure to clear you cache, dalvik cache, and do a factory wipe before flashing your ROM, and, PLEASE purchase Titanium Backup Pro and backup ALL of your apps and data prior to doing ANY of this.

Hope that helps. :D

I've read many time that before I install a ROM I need to be sure to clear cache, dalvik cache, and do a factory wipe.

I will be following the "installing ROMS" from page one. Will doing the following clear the cache, dalvik cache, and do a factory wipe? (Also, what is dalvik cache?)

Open ROM Manager and under ROM Management, select INSTALL ROM FROM SD CARD. The ROM you just downloaded to the ROOT of your SDCard should show up in a list. Press the ROM.
A Pop-up will display with two selections.
1) BACK UP EXISTING ROM - This will backup your current Device. (from SECTION 3 - STEP 3)
2) WIPE DATA AND CACHE - This will completely WIPE your phone CLEAN like a FACTORY RESET. (SDCard will not be effected)

Make sure both options are Checked and press OK.

Dalvik:

You are correct. Wipe DATA, Cache and Dalvik. I prefer to go into recovery, wipe and flash manually. Just because I like to know caches were actually wiped. ITs all preference though. So if your going to use rom manager just follow the directions and you will be in good shape.

This thread has been the most useful rooting thread, and with this post, #388, we still do not have a sticky for it!! i mean seriously MODs, what are you smoking? Is it because he said use "unrEVOked"? Time to push all nonsense to the side and STICKY THIS THREAD!!!

Just noticed this on the RLS 3 download.

Some of the features in RLS 3 (11-05-2010) include:

  • New Base - Official HTC 3.30.651.2 With 2.6.32.15-g0f673ed #10 Kernel
My phone is 3.29.651.5, with kernel #11. Will I have any problems?

Nope... everything will work just fine!

It is technically stickied... however its not the most obvious spot! Its under the HTC EVO Rooting guide that is stickied.

my evo has been rebooting randomly, took it to sprint, did nothing, hard reset phone, still having same problems, they even replaced battery after my battery failed, I want to know if I root phone with unrevoked.com, will this get rid of my rebooting problems?, will phone be faster?, main advantages, or disadvantages

If your phone isn't acting properley unrooted I would suggest holding off on rooting until Sprint can get it figured out. Rooting your phone could potentailly make the problem worse or it may not change at all, so I would get a replacment from them and then begin your root!

Hey Matlock...first of all..great discussion here..wish I would have been here first.

OK...so I got a new EVO on 11/21 and in my haste to get it rooted, I started the LONG process before I came across the unREVoked3 one click app....it was AFTER I downgraded to 2.1 that I found this app AND read that I have the new 2.02 HBoot so none of these work...great :)

So I allowed the firmware upgrade from Sprint back 2.2 and then the software updated to 3.29.### that everyone else has. All is great except my Camera does not work. I did read others had this issue about the firmware issue which I need to resolve somehow.

I guess I will WAIT until there is an unREVoked(4) that will root my phone, but i would like to get my camera back to operational.

Ideas? Thanks in advance!

Well the problem your having is because the newer evo's (hboot 2.02) have different hardware for the camera and need to have software version 3.30xxxx in order to work. I think the only way you will be able to get to s/w version 3.30 is to run the official ruu. Follow the link below and run the RUU. That should get you squared away with a fully functional phone!

[ROM]RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.30.651.2_Radio_2.15. 00.09.01_NV_1.77_003_release - xda-developers

Awesome link..thanks...i just took the released .zip file and as suggested by another user renamed the file PC36IMG.zip, put it on my SD Card and ran recovery boot.

Back to the way it came out of the box....now i look forward to a root :)

I just rooted using your foolproof method and love it. I just installed Set CPU in an effort to overclock my Evo, and I cant seem to do this. The slider will not go any further than 998 mhz. Am I doing something wrong? Overclocking was the whole reason I downloaded this app. Another question is if I uninstall stock apps using titanium backup (Amazon mp3, nascar, etc)... does this have any effect later on down the road if I need to unroot?

TIA

I'm rooted with Unrevoked 3.21 (thanks to Matlock and this thread) and have the stock ROM/kernal. Does anyone know if I have the option to select the "USB tethering" option available to me and have it now work when plugging in the microUSB cable from a PC/laptop?

It will not. Get the Wireless Tether app. You can still plug your phone in to your computer for power, but it will be connected wirelessly for the internet connection.
