Root ROOTING For Dummies

It will not. Get the Wireless Tether app. You can still plug your phone in to your computer for power, but it will be connected wirelessly for the internet connection.
Thanks, already got the Wireless Tether app and it's working. Just wondered if root allowed the USB tethering option, but I guess not. And I already know about the Easytether and PDAnet options.

Thanks OP,
Great thread big help. I've been referring to it a lot over the last few days. Maybe you could add a little section for rooting with a linux OS? I don't know what to do with this file at this point.

EDIT: I figured it out. It's so easy it's painful. Still it would be nice if there were some directions on it.

I do have a quick question, I rooted using unrevoked, before seeing your guide, so sadly i removed the bloatware and didnt freeze it, so now im trying to update to 3.29 and it wont let me for anything. i go into quickboot and try to install from sd and it fails everytime. is there a way that I can still upgrade?

thanks,

Latenitegamer

If you get it to work. Let us know how it goes. :D

Just wanted to respond and say that I got it to work. Two things that seemed to help me were kicking on airplane mode. I was getting text while I was doing this and was getting errors. It may or may not have been related, but putting it into airplane mode will at least rule that out. Also I could not get it to work in 64 bit Windows 7. As soon as I did it on Vista 32 bit it worked like a charm.

Hi all I'm new here and i just rooted my phone...i used the rooted for dummy's . And all is well according to the you tube video, my question is where do i get all the patches to really freak or pimp this phone out...i mean what can i really do with it now that it's rooted...someone show me or let me know off some cool stuff to do with the phone. Thanks

Use the link to Myn's ROM in my signature. It will take you to a great thread for an AWESOME ROM. While you are there, browse through some of the other threads on the XDA forum and see everything else that has been developed for our phones.

Almost 100 thanks and over 20,000 views! Woo! We are apparently doing something right! Keep it coming people! We will eventually have every EVO in the world Rooted! And keep up all the awesome Rooting information!

With this method, yes I am sure. I do not offer steps on other methods. This is the only one I trust. I believe there is another method that will help you root. Don't remember right off hand.

does rooting the phone solve rebooting issues I am having?, or will this make it worse, reboots everytime I am in the market or involved in a game in the marketplace

Could be something going on inside your phone. Maybe a setting that is wrong. I know the Market has been has been having some issues as of late.

Try looking for Market Errors or such in the Forums and see if you can't find an answer. Otherwise it could be a Software issue.

You may want to try and download the latest version of the RUU of the EVO and Flash it from Recovery.
I don't remember if you have to have Root or not to Flash an RUU of the Evo. (Brain Fart) Help me out people..

If that doesn't help, Rooting your device and installing a custom ROM for a fresh new Software.

Or if your planning to Root and change everything anyway just for the hell of it, Factory Reset and see if that corrects your problem. If no, you haven't lost anything too bad, because I recommend Factory Resetting before you Root anyway.

Tagged for info. I picked up new EVO's for me and my wife a few days ago, and we're having an absolute blast with them! Unfortunately, they both have build numbers starting in 3.30, but I'm looking forward to being able to root them once the unrevoked team works their magic. :D

Ok after having my Evo since mid July I decided to root it. I'm not intrested in flashing a custom rom. I just want the junk stuff off or frozen like most of the sprint stuff. I read every direction 3-5 times. unrEVOked said "done". It rebooted and looks just like it did before because I didn't factory reset because I didn't want to lose my photos. I purchased and downloaded Titanium Backup and the open button never opened, huh. Then I downloaded another app that requires you to have root access and it didnt pass the root test. So this makes me think that its not rooted but I found a new app after I rooted it called "superuser permissions". I opened it and its just a black screen with the title of the app on top. how do I figure out if its rooted? If not what could've gone wrong and should I try again if it didn't root?

It sounds like you are rooted. Super User Permissions is an app that is installed as part of rooting. As you grant those permissions to apps that need root they will appear when you open the SUP app.

Download terminal emulator from the market. Type "su" no quotes. If it returns with # you are rooted, if it returns $ you are not rooted. I can tell you right now that you are though. (unrevoked said done and you have the su permissions app.) When you open titanium hit menu, then hit problems. You need busy box installed. That should fix your issues.

Yes sir. Root root root for my Evo. So exciting to freeze be apps. Would love to delete but hopefully Sprint won't drag their feet with gingerbread. They've made a statement that the evo not the epic is their flagship devise so I'm sure we would see those tasty cookies by march at the latest. Since I'm not flashing a ROM I don't want to screw this bad boy up. I just want to improve my battery life.

If your not going to be flashing roms/kernels you aren't gong to be really seeing any sort of change in your battery.

Jut wanted to say thanks, your unrEVOked guide to rooting is invaluable for those of us new to root. I'm a total noob, read your guide 8-10 times, followed the instructions to the letter, & now have a rooted Evo 4G!!! The main reason I rooted was so I can stop paying Sprint $30/mo. for Hotspot, & to freeze all of the bloatware that I'll never use.

I'm not brave enough YET to start flashing ROMs & Kernels just yet... but I'm working on it. :D

Update: Last night I threw caution to the wind, & with a little help from the owner of the EVO Benchers! site, I flashed my first ROM & kernel!!! :D
I flashed Calkulin's EViO 2 ROM v1.6.2, with Netarchy-toastmod-4.2.1-bfs-bfq-nohavs-smartass-universal-signed kernel. All I can say is WOW, that was easy, & this ROM / kernel combination is fast as hell!!! Battery life seems much improved already, though I'm still trying to get the SetCPU settings right.
Also, @Matock, because I've been following this guide to attain root access, I tried using the methods listed in this guide for flashing the rom & kernel, but ROM Manager would not reboot my phone once I checked the boxes to wipe data & cache. I had to manually boot into recovery, & wipe, then install from there. Thanks for writing this guide!!!

So now that I'm rooted is there anything else I can do without flashing my Rom besides freezing apps and deleting them?

I felt the same way about flashing a ROM before I did it. It really isn't that bad. I think the rooting was the most anxiety inducing part. Back everything up with titanium, and copy your sd card to your computer, and do a clockwork.

Then flash your ROM. It's as easy as dragging and dropping a file and restarting your device.

Personally I use the free version of clockwork since it is faster to download the ROMs I want to my computer, and as simple as moving the file to sd and restarting. Read the thread 8-10x and you'll be ok with it.
