Root Clean Update with a Full Wipe with Apps Backed Up?

Once the gingerbread rom gets all configured where everything works, I plan to do a fresh install with it. If I used Titanium Backup or My Backup, would my apps be backuped?

The apps and their data are saved to the SD card so when you do a full wipe, they remain unaffected. If you are pondering which app to purchase between the 2 you mentioned, get Titanium and don't look back.

Just wanted to throw my two pennies in and suggest App Brain which also backups apps
App brain doesn't backup the data though and it really just remembers what apps you had on the phone, you still have to redownload them all and manually install them. Titanium allows a batch restore where you click a few buttons and let it do it's thing.
App brain still is awesome though for finding and installing new apps.

could i get away with the free version of Titanium? or is the paid version a must?

You can use the free version but it becomes annoying because you must restore each app individually whereas you can press a single button in the paid version. If you flash often it can become very time consuming.
