Root Rooting the Huawei Ascend for Cricket users!

I think that Barnacle will be the answer for me. Now that I know that I can pull up the Barnacle network on my laptop, Im sure it will work once I get the phone activated. That was what I needed. You are Great!!!! Thanks!

When you do activate it, you will be able to do that using Barnacle. Hope I helped out

Yes. Here it is:

1. First, enable USB Debugging on your phone

2. Using your phone's browser go here and download the file z4root.1.3.0.apk

3. Save it to your phone.

4. If the download is unsuccessful, download the free app: Dolphin Mini Browser and try that. It should work.

5. If you don't see the app after it is installed, go to file manager in the app drawer and go to your sd card icon and go to the dolphin browser mini folder. You will find it there.

6. Open up z4root and when it asks for permissions, be sure to click on 'allow'.

7. Then do a PERMANENT root. You can always unroot later.

8. After you start the process your phone will turn off. This way you know it is working. When it turns back on it will be rooted. You can check to be sure by opening up z4root again and it will give you the option to: reroot

9. Download Titanium Backup from the Market.

10. Open it and be sure to give it permissions by clicking on Allow.

11. Tap the tab in the middle that says Backup/Restore:

12. Back up any apps you want to uninstall first. VERY IMPORTANT!

13. Then click on them again and select Uninstall.

14. You can remove just about any stock app that came with your phone that you do not use except the browsers (Mobile Web is an exception) or anything named google (e.g: google talk) Also, do not uninstall any of your stock email apps as it can create problems.

15. Next, download SetCPU from the Market and reset your CPU to 600 Mhz.

That's it!

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks Jazz!

Just 1 more question/concern......what is the failure rate? Of course I dont want to brick my phone;)

If you follow these instructions to the T you should have NO problems.

If your phone is having problems now...you might want to fix those first before rooting.

It really is simple. It only requires "following directions". I'll be here for a little while if you want to do it now with someone standing by.

PS...those who have failed have usually done so because they removed stock apps that are needed for the phone to function properly. That has been explained in the instructions so you probably won't have that prob.

I am currently at work so I dont want to begin the process now=/

But 1 more question haha! Does rooting the phone make it faster? I know the clock speed will adjust it but is it noticeable? Right now, the phone is "laggy" when trying to run any gaming apps. Will the root help the problem?

PS....it took me like a week to finally decide to jailbreak my itouch as I didnt want to brick it=P

Yes it makes it faster and also the display is clearer. It's much 'smoother'.

Once it's rooted you can also use tethering on it. A big plus!

It makes it possible for you to use your phone as a router. :)

When you do look into it you might want to consider Barnacle. It works great!

Ah nice!! As I look closer to rooting, I went to the market to look up titanium and the setcpu app.

Do I get the free version of titanium and is the setcpu app the $1.99 one?

Just want to be sure I am on the right track;)

Oh yea.....I think this may be my final question, sorry, but how hard is it to restore back to factory settings?

Like if the newest OS updates dont load from it being rooted and a restore would be needed to update.

You can try the free version of Titanium Backup but I think that to do everything you want you need to have the pro version. SetCPU is what I used and yes that's the one.

You can restore uninstalled apps if you backed them up first with Titanium. When the new upgrade comes out it will be necessary to do that with some apps. And you will also need to unroot. This is easy. The main thing is not to remove any critical stock app that came with your phone.

These are not so easily restored.

It's not a big deal really. When the upgrade to 2.2 is released there will be plenty of people here to get you through it. :)

Hello all, I had one small question that has been bugging me..How do you "Enable USB Debugging" on the phone? lol

NVM I found it..But I have another question..once rooted and stuff backed up and uninstalled can you then remove titanium and dolphin?? and do you set the setcpu mhz to 600 on BOTH sliders? Min and Max?

You need to keep Titanium so that you can restore if you need to, which is a possibility when the upgrade is released. You don't have to have dolphin but it is handy to download things that the stock browser won't. I set the max to 600 Mhz and leave it at the min.

Glad you had the success you did with it!

I bought/activated a Cricket Ascend, rooted it, installed titanium, setcpu and ROM manager. Now I am having problems with cell service, anytime I try making a call it comes up with a "If you want to make a collect call press 1....." Tried calling cricket, they said to reset phone. Didn't work, only thing I have removed is the bowling/uno. Any ideas?

Are you roaming by any chance?

Bought in MD, brought out to CA for a few days, tried the *228 (thought it was like the VZW version to update roaming) it said activation failed, now back in home market. Problem is still happening

I would contact your carrier right away if you are getting that message. Normally that is the message you get when you don't have funds set up to cover your calls. Maybe when you tried to call so many times out of your coverage area they might have put a hold on your phone.

Also, when you know you're going to be roaming, it's best to buy some roaming coverage before you leave your normal coverage area. Otherwise it is very difficult to get it through. You can't even call 611 without it being a collect call. A bit ridiculous IMO but that's the way it is.

I just did step

6. Open up z4root and when it asks for permissions, be sure to click on 'allow'.

7. Then do a PERMANENT root.

It been stuck at a screen saying running exploit in oder to obtain root access ...

How long does it stay on that screen or did i do something wrong ?

Updated : Phone just reset itself
