Verizon's Fascinate Update Page

Thanks for the article!! It helped a lot!

Just spent about an hour on the phone with some Android specialist with VZW. Fun. Anyway, my SF is working as well as can be expected again. What she was saying is that, for some reason, with the upgrade, the driver needed to be updated on my laptop to be able to recognize the phone. So, as the article said, I needed to download the V Cast Media Manager; it doesn't need to run though...just installed.

Also, just a side note. I mentioned my issue with the media player randomly running in the background; she hasn't heard of that problem, but at least it's noted now. Also, I have been noticing that my media volume is randomly resetting to about 1/3 of maximum volume. Strange.

I have read that others are having issues with Swype as I am after the update. Either the 1st two letters of my first sentence will be capitalized or the 1st two words of my 1st sentence will be capitalized. What is more annoying is that there are alot of nonsence words now in the Swype word list. Words that I have never put in there, words that were not in there before the update and words that do not mean anything. Words like eea are now in my list and I cannot remove them....makes no sence to me. I do however love having GPS that locks on in seconds instead of minutes.

I am so glad you mentioned this.....I am having tons of problems with SWYPE and I thought it was just me since nothing else is mentioned in the lists about SWYPE :p

**just got off the phone with a VZW rep. They say they haven't heard anything about the SWYPE issue and sent a bunch of info to their data team, who may call me if they need more specific info.**
I also have a lot of nonsense words coming up, but perhaps most irritating....the word "want" always comes up as "wasn't"

I also have the problem with the media player running when I know I never turned it on. Not sure how or when it happens but I find myself shutting it down atleast a couple times a day.

Have you tried clearing data and defaults in the media player application manager?

Menu > settings > applications > manage applications.

Reboot.

I have checked all of my settings multiple times. I think these things are directly related to the update :( While it's nice that my GPS finally works great, it would be nice if the rest of the phone didn't get f*cked up in the process.

I meant have you cleared all data, etc? Not checked the settings.

Just repeating to be sure. ;)

yes;)

but just to be sure, can you detail what you meant by "clear all data"?

I did go in to clear all the data, but it says I will lose all my files. I will not be able to recover some of the music since I don't have the disks and the files are not on my hard drive.

I think I accidentally stumbled onto something yesterday, and I'm not sure if it's due to the update DL09 or not. I can be talking on my phone and still use the browser and my apps at the same time...just like my bf can on his iPhone (that was something he used to tease me about all the time). I first noticed this when I was on the phone with my sister yesterday and an IM came through (using the app ebuddy). Usually, this app disconnects when I'm on a call and I have to re-open the app to get it to reconnect after I hang up. So, I started playing around with the phone, making calls and opening my browser and Facebook app and such, and they all worked!!!

I posted this article yesterday about the HTC Thunderbolt finally having the voice/data at the same time capability. I didn't think I'd be able to do it too...wondering if this was accidentally added into the update.

HTC ThunderBolt to be the first Verizon handset to support voice and data at the same time - Phone Arena

On the downside, I'm still having the problems with Swype; I rely heavily on Swype. I've given up correcting most of the word errors on messages to people who know me most. It got a bit exhausting to backspace and correct every other word in a sentence. Some of them are totally hilarious though.

I spent more time on the phone with another VZW tech yesterday and she said I can't roll back the software without rooting the phone and voiding the warranty, but she said she could send me another phone which will possibly not have the update on it. So....I'm sitting here waiting for Fed Ex this morning. My dilema is....what's more important to me? Swype or voice/data??? I'll play around with the new phone and see what's on it before I decide which to keep, and I'll keep y'all posted in case anyone is curious.;)

no current cdma verizon phones will do data/voice at the same time...while its theoretically possible for cdma to do both, its not currently (nor will it ever be) set up for it

are you on wifi cause you can use voice and data at the same time when using wifi. But its a hardware limitation that you cannot do it only using 3g/1x

ok...sorry. You're right. My teenager was playing with my phone and I didn't realize he had turned on wifi. Damn. That would've been cool! :(

What's interesting is that the thunderbolt won't be the first vzw phone to do voice and data. What a ridiculous claim. Vzw world phones can do it in gsm mode.

I am soooooo sick of my Fascinate! Since the update, my phone has completely locked up at least a dozen times!! I have to do a battery pull everytime! My icons on my home screen tripple in size and freezes! There is no rhyme or reason to it. After I do a battery pull, my damn music player starts up automatically! I was almost late for work because the alarm decided it didn't want to go off! Never again will I buy a Samsung! Back to HTC for me!!!!!

for those interested...

I got the replacement phone last night. It was running DI01 and Swype worked wonderfully. And then 20 minutes later the phone started freezing up and the Market wouldn't let me do anything with it, and the four buttons at the bottom of the phone wouldn't work. I checked to make sure it wasn't a touch screen issue (once the phone would finally unfreeze) and it wasn't. I could use the entire screen in other apps (I had only managed to download a few)....before they froze as well.

I called Verizon so I could re-activate my old Fascinate. They are sending a replacement for the replacement...LAME! It's due to get here on Monday. However, I'm mulling over the idea of living with the issues I have with my current phone in hopes that Froyo will fix all of it.

I read two articles yesterday. One stated T-Mobile is starting to update their Galaxy S phones starting today, and the other says Sprint is telling their Galaxy S customers they'll get it ASAP. So, I'm holding out hope that it means VZW will get it out soon. (http://www.phonearena.com/news/Froyo-update-for-the-Samsung-Vibrant-is-expected-to-roll-out-starting-tomorrow_id16113) (http://phandroid.com/2011/01/20/sprint-reassures-samsung-epic-4g-froyo-update-is-coming-asap/)

Needless to say, between everything I read up on and talking to you guys in this forum, every single Verizon tech support person I talk to tells me I know more about Android than they do and know more about the current and new phones coming out. That's a little frustrating knowing that (1) I don't know that much and (2) they should know enough to be able to help me with the issues on my phone.

Anyway, as I said...I'm on the fence on whether or not to even bother trying another Fascinate (and the DI01 instead of DL09). Any comments and suggestions would be helpful. And for those thinking about suggesting I just buy a new phone that isn't Samsung....thought of it. I'm waiting for the next round of phones. Not a MOT fan, but tossing around the idea of DROID Bionic since the other phones I liked from CES aren't going to be available on VZW.

RE: the music player....it will keep running in the background automatically after almost every time it's plugged in or docked. :( Can't fix it as far as I've been told, however, at least it doesn't start randomly playing music out loud! LOL
As for the phone being all messed up after the update...mine has been too. After doing a couple of factory resets on mine (while waiting for the replacement for the replacement...see prior posts), mine is working somewhat better. the freezing problem seems to be better. I know it's a pain in the a$$ to wipe the phone clean and have to start over.......but I'm here to tell you that it seems to have helped with my major problems so far (it's only been about 13 hours since I did it).
It's worth a try ;)

Vodaphone does not own Verizon. They have a 45% stake in Verizon Wireless.

Thanks for looking that up. I would guess they are the largest stockholder then unless Verizon owns 46% of their own stock. Basically would mean that Vodaphone could control most stockholder motions.

Based on previous experience, typically Sprint releases updates at least a month faster than Verizon for the same smartphone. Usually a couple of months. I think that gives us a time frame at least. Samsung does follow through on their promises to upgrade as well, eventually. It just takes longer. HTC and Moto are just "slow".

I have to say the X is a solid phone. The camera app being the only tempramental item.

Based on my experience with Samsung TV's, they have a tendency to not fix/update current models, meaning you need to purchase the next year's model for the fix. I know the phones are separate from the TV's, but IMO, it's still one big company with the same business practice.

BTW...saw this article this morning and posted on my facebook page with a note stating: must resist the urge to buy (cause damn it sounds temmpting!)..... LOL :p

Besides dual-core, Samsung Galaxy S2 might also be the thinnest smartphone - Phone Arena
