All Things Froyo

So while so many are busy throwing Samsung under the bus, it seems clear to me that we're waiting on AT&T to remove their heads from their anal orifice.

True..for all the speculations of who/what is holding up upgrades, it appears the operator (ATT) is the culprit here

I agree, this seems more of a carrier than a manufacturer issue. Why would the rest of the world have it and not USA? Because of ATT.

I've had my Captivate since August! Before I even knew about upgrades. When I started reading this forum, I became alot smarter about this phone and it's capabilities. I have rooted and flashed Cognition 3.01, and upgraded to 3.02. As I do agree that the phones should perform as advertised, I really have enjoyed learning how to root this device and mess with it as I have with my PC's. I feel in control now, instead of relying on AT&T. And this thing blazes. So until my next upgrade when I will most likely go 4G, I will learn more, experiment more and be more aware of how these devices really work. It's kind of fun. These aren't just phones anymore, mine has caused me to delay buying a laptop. Anyway, thanks to all in this form and XDA for the knowledge.

Sorry not completely true... Samsung is slowly releasing it to the US but have to work with the carriers to ensure it works with their specific customiztions that they have on the device it is a partnership...

What about a petition for a class action? I bought the phone because the update was "due within the month" - or so I was told in August of 2010. Does this have any merit and if so, can we begin a new thread here on the forum to express support for the idea?

An update was provided in a month, just not the update we wanted.

A tech podcast I listen to, Buzz Out Loud, seem to believe that Samsung's Touchwiz is extremely difficult to work with and may be the exact reason why Froyo is so late. Add the carrier specific crapware and you have a great challenge.

Settle down..it's a $400 device..not a $40000 car our something

I've been hesitant to root and flash for a number of reasons but I was bored today and took the plunge and flashed to Cognition 3.02. I feel so stupid that I waited so long. My phone is so much faster. I can't wait to try out some of the other stuff 2.2 offers. Just losing the lag I had is 100% worth the 25 minutes it took me to do it.

Is there a thread anywhere that really breaks down the step by step process for those of us who are sick of waiting but who are also intimidated because we dont know squat about how to do this?

For some people, it's the principle of the thing, and everyone has a right to their opinion, in either direction.

Some are rumoring that this action has already prompted Samsung into action with the carriers to get the Froyo update out tout de suite.

Absolutely! Not to mention the annoyance of the lag, GPS problems, etc... The simple fact in my case, and I can only speak for myself, is that I did not get what I was promised and enticed into the "upcoming update" which superseded my return option. Totally my fault for buying the hype; however, it was hype ATT created and promised. In short, I was mislead. It may only be a $400 investment, but as was pointed out, it is a matter of principle. (Add to that, I bought the phone for my wife as well.)
It is also worth noting I inquired with ATT as to what options I had now since my phones were purchased based on the understanding of their commentary. I was told unequivocally, "there is nothing that can be done". Maybe some people dont mind getting screwed over. I'm not one of them.

We all get "screwed over"from time to time. Just have to pick your battles imo or you'll be fighting it every day. To me this its not a battle worth bothering about since 2.2 is really available via a custom rom...and probably far superior than any"official" 2.2 anyway

I understand your position clearly - feel free to post in the linked thread and find updates on the situation.

Best luck on a difficult position to be in!

You stated my point precisely. To you, its not a big deal - and thats perfectly OK. To me, it IS a big deal - primarily because I sit like millions of others being falsely pacified by ATT while not having the knowledge of rooting the phone and doing the upgrades myself. Were I capable, my frustration would indeed be far less. I wouldnt like it, but I would be able to at least remedy the problem. Currently, I have no options other than to voice the same sentiment here echoed across the US.
Perhaps FLDude, if you know the procedure to "update" the phone, and yes I do mean step by step of even the most rudimentary points, you might share that on here. I for one would greatly appreciate it.

You know, if a 54 year old mom can figure out how to put a custom ROM on pretty much anyone can. Just sayin'.

So you'd recommend he try ...

... as the right resources to find the step-by-step procedures?

And post follow-on questions in Captivate - All Things Root - Android Forums?

Or - are there better resources?
