All Things Froyo

FWIW - from a response by Samsung Service on Facebook yesterday:

We understand you are frustrated and we are listening. Samsung feels it is important to make the Android 2.2/Froyo upgrade available only after we feel that we can give the millions of U.S. Galaxy S owners a simple and reliable upgrade experience. Due to the complexity and unique functionality of each Galaxy S device, we are performing additional testing and are working to make the Android 2.2/Froyo upgrade available to all Galaxy S owners, ASAP.

Thanks for your cooperation and patience.

[ROM] Cognition v3.01 - xda-developers

I'm thinking it might be time to jump on the Cognition bandwagon. v3.01 looks pretty exciting.

I've been hesitant to root and flash for a number of reasons but I was bored today and took the plunge and flashed to Cognition 3.02. I feel so stupid that I waited so long. My phone is so much faster. I can't wait to try out some of the other stuff 2.2 offers. Just losing the lag I had is 100% worth the 25 minutes it took me to do it.

I've said more than once that maybe they want it to be ready to release before they do. I can understand the simplicity of that.

25 minutes isn't bad..but how much time is spent reading up on how to do it, tips, things not to do, etc on XDA prior to flashing?

I'm wondering what percentage of captivate owners are fine with 2.1 and wouldn't even consider rooting and flashing there are? Not on these and other forums, but all over...my guess is at least 90%..if that is true I can see the motivation for Samsung &/or ATT to not release 2.2 anytime soon

Hopefully long enough to understand they're taking serious steps. It's worth it, though.

Let's play with your statistics - I'll ask you how many Captivate owners actually are on these forums? I don't think more than 10% of all Captivate owners are on these forums, most are just using their phone. Of that 10% who have wandered in here, I'll bet 45-50% of them will eventually root their phones, if not flash a ROM. The people who have found these forums are seekers, and I think they're more inclined to root and flash because they find the info here.

As for Samsung, the ill will they're buying with this foot-dragging is going to cost them in phone sales in the long run. Not a good marketing plan.

My company authorized several of us to buy Android tablets and left it to me for recommendations. Until recently I was planning on the Sammy Galaxy Tablet, but no mas.

I too was getting impatient for Froyo, forget about the reason it is delayed. So I finally took the plunge too and flashed Cognition 3.02 two nights ago. It took me about 25 minutes also, but then all of the restoring and changing the settings back the way I liked them took another two hours.

I am very happy with how easy it went and how much more I know about the phone because of it. The videos in this post helped me get through it almost seamlessly.

Wow... I post a response directly FROM Samsung, but it isn't good enough. You read something third-hand from a third-party, and you accept it.

Nothing to see here folks... keep moving.

You posted something that Samsung has been saying for a couple months; a standard release. It wasn't news.
This was news.

This was news.

So let me see if I have this right... A post which quotes a third-party article which has a Samsung comment is "news."

Yet, a direct response from Samsung stating that they will deliver Froyo isn't.

Uh... yeah... That makes loads of sense.

A post, which links an article that quotes Samsung. Yes it is news, because it showed something new, other than "Yes we will release it at some point".
It's news because it was NEW.
What you posted has been mentioned a 1000 times already, therefor NOT NEW and not news.

So yes, it does make loads of sense.

You are correct on the researching but in reality that didn't take long either as I used the one page "cheat sheet" posted over on XDA. I had got to the point where I was starting to get considerable lag using K9 email (among other things). Now it goes from screen to screen instantly. I was also suffering from problems with the actual phone dialer functionality. It would lock up a lot when trying to view the call log. That ultimately lead me to flash the phone which I swore I wouldn't do. I couldn't be happier and now that I've done it I have no problem with doing it again if something better comes along.

I cannot believe Samsung said this - "Promise!" That right there is enough to enrage people.

Anyway, I agree with the guy above, this is not news. It's the same old shit Samsungs been shoveling since release. I actually think Samsung is truly lying through its teeth this time (what's new?). I admit it doesn't make very much sense why the rest of the world has 2.2 on their galaxy S phones while we do not; it makes you want to point fingers at the carriers, but then why do NONE of the 4 U.S. carriers have 2.2.? There are ROMs out for all U.S. phones based on i9000 official releases...so obviously not some sort of technical problem they need to get over - the i9000 is the same damn phone anyway but with some extra features. The explanation that makes the most sense to me is that it is political (because all 4 carriers do not have it). I don't think that the carriers are not to blame as well though, obviously if that source is legitimate it means all 4 carriers signed a contract without scrutinizing it thoroughly and only after the fact decided to band together against the oppression of Samsung. I can easily see AT&T making this mistake but Verizon who's an android king??? Perhaps you could argue that since no other manufacturer charges for updates Verizon assumed Samsung didn't either and didn't look closely enough.

Just because that explanation makes the most sense to me doesn't mean I think it's CORRECT. However, I do think it is CLOSEST to the actual truth behind the matter.

Quick question from a noob here.

No one on ATT has gotten the 2.2 update, correct?

2.2 is also known as Froyo, correct?

Sorry for the simple questions lol.

Well, I'm glad Samsung came out with SOME information. But it is their own fault that all these rumors are floating around, since they are not releasing any kind of information.

You're really going to blame a corporation for someone else making up garbage? LOL

To a certain extent, they are at fault for those rumors, absolutely.
When you don't release any info at all on anything, naturally, the rumors are going to start.
They released 0 information on GPS issue, hence all the rumors on that.
They released 0 information on Froyo release, and once again, rumors start.

In any case, I don't really care about who to blame. I am simply done with Samsung phones.
