All Things Froyo

I spoke with AT&T tech support today. I was told not to quote her, but "2.2 for captivate will be released on Jan 17th." Of course I broke out laughing.

I call every month just to register complaints about the broken gps and lack of froyo.

John

That was the original plan new date looks to be around the 13-15 of Feb

For what it is worth (not much), the guy at AT&T I was talking to about my issues (Exchange calendar syncing, tethering) was confused himself as they now have 2.2 scripts and tech support material but no information on how to upgrade the phones themselves to 2.2. So is that good news, implying it is coming to AT&T someday? Yeah my optimism is fading faster than I can type this...

I am looking forward to the latest version of android on my next device, that WILL NOT be manufactured by samsung.

As far as the galaxy s...until they prove me wrong, I feel that they have abandoned it.

Hey all. Been lurking for a bit, but putting this post out for those who want to easily flash their Captivate to Froyo (2.2). I've found the easiest way to do this is by using the Odin3 one-click app. The rom dropped by this app pretty much looks and acts like an official AT&T / Samsung build. NOTE: This does not require rooting your phone.

The instructions to do this can be found at this link:
How To: Android 2.2 Captivate - BriefMobile

Pros:
- Easy to flash (I've done it twice with no ill effects)
- Flash 10.1 included and works (some caveats tho...see Cons below)
- Browser is more stable
- Supposed performance improvements, though I've not really noticed any significant differences
- Pinch/Zoom home screen
- Provides Mobile AP and USB Tethering options in Wireless settings (but I have not tried using them yet)

Cons:
- Still contains all AT&T bloatware
- Flash works, but jerky if the flash item has not been optimized for mobile (Skyfire may still be better option for some sites)
- Still cannot sideload apps (i.e., load apps outside of Android Market). However I'll post a work-around for that
- GPS lock and lag issues still exist
- Warning: Removes all apps and data from your phone. I had to reload all apps from the Android Market. Luckily I use Google for my contacts, so was able to sync them easily back to the phone. Your home screen layouts will be lost as well. Back up your data before doing this.

So, if you don't want to wait until mid-February (at least that's what the rumors say), this build has worked well for me. I've had no problems since I flashed.

Hope this helps.

As promised, here's the work-around I've found for AT&T's "crippling" of side-loading apps to the Captivate. I have used this successfully to install the Firefox mobile beta app to my Captivate.

A developer at Android Central has created a program called the Android Sideload Wonder Machine. This allows you to side-load apps to the Captivate, even though AT&T has crippled this feature on the phone.

Here is the link to Android Central blog for the Sideload Wonder Machine:
Sideload Android apps all you want with the Sideload Wonder Machine | Android Central

Read the blog and follow the links for the files to download and instructions on using it. I've found it very easy to install and use.

NOTE: This does not require you to root your phone, so if you're a little squeamish about that, no worries!

1) That's an old, leaked early developer build. It's known to have many problems and official final 2.2 builds for other Galaxy S models have significant advances and improvements since then. I'm not sure anyone wants to run a known-buggy beta/alpha build on their phone.

2) The sideloading thing has been talked about all over these forums for many, many months now and is mentioned in countless threads, stickies, and on the Captivate FAQ: Sideloading - CapFAQ

Can someone help with a problem regarding my update today to firmware for my captivate on rogers in canada.
I finally worked my way thru a few various issues and updated. after it rebooted a msg in the pulldown menu for alerts said samsung apps had a large number (12) to be exact for their specific apps on phone. I.e. the first one i believe was the camera.
Now first of all, i thought these updates might happen automatically but then...it didnt and i am not that technology minded...so i did the first one.

i clicked on update samsung camera and it did it no problem, then it asked if i wanted to open it right now or close. i didnt want to go in so i closed it.

here is the problem, instead of taking me back to that list of necessary updates it just went back to a home screen?
So now i have no idea what was the list of necessary 11 other updates?

how do i find that list so i can complete it?

please and thank you.

I wasn't too impressed with Firefox mobile. Granted it is a Beta, but it was extremely slow and with Firefox being such a staple in the Desktop market, you would think they would put some effort toward the exploding mobile market before they lose out to Dolphin, Opera, and Skyfire.

Sremick, thanks for the reply.

1) I know there's several builds for the Galaxy S models. The info I posted is on the one I found easiest to do for a newbie or someone who doesn't want to learn rooting, etc. I was not aware that the version is buggy. I've been running it for several weeks without any issues. What's the best 2.2 build, in your opinion, for the Captivate?

2) I'm new to these forums, and I did not see the side-loading thing mentioned in this particular thread. I figured it was kind of related, so I included the tip with my original post so readers would not have to search elsewhere for it.

Thanks, Blu

Hi Mnemonicj. I completely agree with you on your Firefox Mobile assessment. I only mentioned it in my post to let others know that I was able to sideload it to the Captivate. They definitely need to put more polish and work into it before it's ready for public use.

If possible, please condense your replies to one post using the multi-quote feature.

On another note, has the mid-February Froyo release for AT&T been confirmed or do my hopes have to be dashed again?

I contacted a representative and all I got was a glorified "I dunno lol".

Well, I've just about had it with ATT. Terrible internet, terrible phone service, terrible update time frames and terrible customer service. It's no wonder the iPhone is switching over to Verizon.

If only I had known this before signing that two year contract, eh?

I asked the AT&T guy at the store where I bought my phone when we would be getting froyo and he said, " I don't know what that is." and went back to staring out the window.

Mid-February? That is redonculous! I better be getting my froyo this week. If i gotta wait till then it better be gingerbread.

Funny thing...I said something about Froyo coming out. A member's reply was that 2 days after it is released someone would be complaining that Gingerbread isn't out.

Imagine that!

I got my gingerbread themes and froyo so not really worried about it. This forum blows a bunch tools that just bitch. Captivate sucks and att sucks worst. But my captivate is now labelled as 1900 to the market and all servers and now i get it alllllll. life is great no more bitching

On behalf of those who don't whine and complain, we are glad you're happy.

I joined because these "where is froyo?" threads are like a support group almost.

I browsed through the whole thread and wanted to add my two cents as to why I wasn't flashing a custom ROM. I'm working on word of mouth that flashing back to stock is enough to bypass warranty issues. I haven't heard too many testimonials saying they had no problems doing this.

This is a big concern for me because my gps just literally died. I can't get a lock in the best of conditions. I, like some others, had hoped to consolidate and have one device for calling and gps. In any event I feel like I'm in some middle ground where I'm tired of waiting for the official froyo to come out but I don't want to risk breaking warranty. I'm also curious to see if the upgrade helps the gps issue at all before I send my phone back(we all know that this is a pain).

As for samsung I've had it with them. As the first response says I will vote with my money. I had the Eternity previous to this and the promised update didn't come. I should have known better but I had googly eyes when I saw the captivate. Then during this whole debacle I learned that updates never came for the mythic, impression, sync, and blackjack samsung phones either. I'm not saying that froyo isn't going to come out but by the time it does it's going to be like "who gives a ****?" because our phone will be obsolete software wise no matter what.

On a positive note other than samsung's shenanigans and the gps issue I love the phone and I guess I'll give samsung until mid february for the update before I send it back to see about the gps issue. It's the best phone i've ever had. I just hate that samsung isn't doing it justice.

I think one of the reasons I got the Captivate is because there is no real competition to the Captivate on AT&T... yet. HTC Aria and Motorola Backflip are nothing compared to the Captivate on speed and the Captivate was the only AT&T phone when I bought it in August, that claimed it would be upgraded to Froyo.

All of that is about to change and Samsung better get their act together or they won't have near the number of people buying the Infuse. How nice is the Infuse going to be if it has the same GPS problems, Samsung delays the release of Gingerbread more than 7 months after the release of the phone, and the quality control of the Infuse is similar to the Captivate?

Even though Amazon Wireless made it a cinch for me to exchange my first two Captivates because Samsung has horrible quality control and they were defective, I wouldn't want to do it again. After all of that crap that Samsung has been shoveling, I feel like giving HTC or Motorola my business now.

I know this question is in vane, but I will ask anyway. Do we know if the file system will be addressed. That seems to be the main cause of slowdowns on the phone.
