All Things Froyo

Root the captivate and install OCLF on it

That's not good advice. OCLF's "lagfix" is shakey and horribly outdated... using a filesystem almost 20 years old (ext2)... and that combined with the virtualization/loopback method makes it extremely easy to corrupt your device.

Is it fast? Sure. Is it easy to install? Dangerously so. Is it safe? Hardly.

k,, im sick of the wait,, can someone send me in the right direction to root my phone with a good 2.2 rom,, with easy step by step instruction,, im on rogers with win7 64bit on my comp

I spoke with AT&T tech support today. I was told not to quote her, but "2.2 for captivate will be released on Jan 17th." Of course I broke out laughing.

I call every month just to register complaints about the broken gps and lack of froyo.

Warranty support told me on Friday that it'll be sometime in February. I think part of what makes this so frustrating is that nobody has the courtesy to just say "We don't know" so they give vague answers that just piss everyone off.

Long time lurker. Had a tech chat with someone at ATT and received this:

Rep: I apologize that you are having issues with the current operating system for your Captivate phone today. XX: Can you tell me when Android 2.2 will be released to the Samsung Captivate?
Rep: I will be more than happy to assist you, Ben.
Rep: The release date has not been provided. We have only been told that it will be in the middle of February.
Rep: I do apologize.
Kristina Lynn: This is the only information that we currently have.
XX: ok thanks
Rep: When it is released, we will notify our Captivate users that it is available.
Rep: You are welcome.

Every few months, it get pushed out another few months. "Middle of February" holds as much legitimacy now as the "end of the year" we were told before.

They could save themselves a lot of trouble if they just start saying . . .

Froyo on Captivate before year end 2011.

AT&T: rethink pessimism

I would read that thread on XDA, lots of people having problems with different things and there are multiple solutions already posted there.

I stopped by the AT&T Store. Spoke to a saleperson that gave me the same infromation. Mid February 2.2 will be out.

I know it was a saleman and ya just can't trust em!

Curious about the hardware differences between Rogers vs. AT&T's captivate. They are both called Captivate, but with different model numbers i897= AT&T and i896= Rogers.

Assuming there are only firmware and software differences, if the hardware is exactly the same, that's a pretty big deal.
