All Things Froyo

Dumping everything into one thread is like placing two piles of clutter into one pile of clutter. Still clutter and takes longer to look through.

It is like sitting at a table with multiple conversations going on at the same time.

Why not add another sub forum for official updates?

And sadly we had to learn the hard way that creating a subforum for this sort of thing solved nothing: everyone continued to post their front-page news that had to be moved into the subforum - because it was quickly learned that in a chaotic subforum, your version of the news could get bumped and new competing threads started until flame wars broke out.

And from an earlier personal exchange today:

Next - if we sub-forum it - I covered that alternative. We've actually seen an actual solution get pushed off the front page while the forum's self-made superstars argued the same things in the other threads - chest thumping until they missed the real news themselves. That would lead to them being given infractions, or warnings or whatever. Normally, those same kinda guys are the most helpful, so if we have a system that encourages their strong participation on one hand but punishes them on the other... unfair.

And it encourages a system where someone with real news doesn't get heard at all - unfair.

Just recently, we put in the suggestion box a number of schemes that we might try to alleviate this. We announced it in the top forum sticky. We listened to everyone's input and are looking for improvement. Too few responded to help us suggest things.

I'm pretty sure I even personally put out a call for participation from the Captivate gang.

So long as people ignore that this issue is being discussed and ignore that what they have as breaking news is already being discussed, they start new threads - and each thread degrades into flaming over whether to root or not to get froyo, or stop whining because I love my phone, etc, etc.

That wouldn't happen if people followed our guidelines.

In the time I answered this, I killed 3 spammers and stopped a troll using two usernames to incite arguments.

We don't combine because we like it or because it's easier for us. We do it because no one has suggested a reasonable workaround that's fair.

That said - we might revamp the entire site to use prefixing (instead of subforums) to solve this problem. We're still trying to figure out if that solves the problem or shifts it.

Today, a guy posted a new thread. One user pointed him at the main froyo thread - instead of reporting it. He ignored that user redirect, asked more questions and got more responses - to the same subject.

Threads are for subjects.

I've even asked people if they wanted some of this broken into sub-subjects to allow them to argue whatever points that way - got politely flamed for my asking.

I don't know what else to tell you - we're trying to keep it fair for everyone, but when users abuse the system, all we can do is enforce.

Can we go back to just discussing Froyo now? Please?

There's only a few of us - and thanks to carrier/manufacturer shenanigans creating these issues, we're trying like crazy to keep it sensible and fair on more phone forums than you might be aware of.

I did get a phone in November but I returned it....... So I talked to RadioShack about the new ones and they said the OTA update for 2.2 comes right after they are setup.

I agree, I want to hear more from this guy that claims at&t store reps said froyo is out and they updated OTA.
I am from Mass. THey seemed very friendly and honest. I was on the phone with AT&T for over an hour in the store because of upgrade eligibility error on AT&T's part. The salespeople were not your regular salespeople. They were down to earth and as I can tell genuinely honest. One of them even made a call to another employee who has the Captivate to confirm it has 2.2 from OTA. I listened to the whole call and warned I only wanted the phone if it updates to 2.2 in store.
If you only wanted the phone if it updated to 2.2 OTA in store, I assume you no longer have this phone. Even if they were genuinely honest, they could have been genuinely stupid. You're the first person I've heard something like this from. I just completely dumbfounded by how dumb some of these people who work at our cell phone stores, best buys and radioshacks can be. They simply have no idea what they're talking about. When i walk into a best buy, I really just hope they stay away from me. I've gotten into a couple of small tech debates with best buy employees over things from HDTVs to iPods to audio equipment. I simply can't put in words how tech illiterate some of these people are. They tell you the camera with the highest MP is the best, the computer with the highest GHz processor(no matter the generation processor or if its amd or intel) is fastest, and they tell you that captivates have froyo!

Sorry about the rant that came out of nowhere, anyway...so what happened? Could they explain why you couldn't receive the update but other employees claim to have froyo OTA.

UPDATE: We posted at the same time

what do u mean setup. Any by new ones do you mean the captivates that are being sold currently?

Also, I am not claiming that he told me this. He did tell me this. He also called a fellow employee who was not at work who owns the phone and spoke with her.

I did not have the phone I returned it in November I said... I was looking to purchase another one. By setup I mean putting the sim card in and activating the phone the network.

They lied, knowingly or not, plain and simple. There is no OTA FROYO update for captivate. Even if retail store level at&t employees were getting froyo in advance for beta testing or whatever, it probably wouldn't be OTA. Just another case of dumb tech store employees. If froyo is really out and just hasn't made its rounds of updates OTA and is released in the next few days then maybe I'm wrong which i hope.

What I'm guessing is that they're so stupid that they are updating to the OTA that came out back in what september and are assuming it is froyo.

I don't understnad how much more specific I can get than saying I went into RadioShack looking for a new Captivate.

Well frog no need to call people liers. This forum is here for discussion and if you READ what I was typing I was just asking if anyone else received it. Thanks

i apologize, don't take offense, I said they lied knowingly or not. All of this froyo speculation and delaying by at&t is getting everyone's temper a little hot about the subject

Calm down - he called the Radio Shack guys liars - whether intentional or not, they seem to have not spoken the truth to you.

No one has heard, nor can confirm, that this OTA to 2.2 they told you about exists.

And by 2.2 - we're talking Android 2.2, not the most recent build number from someone.

That matters - a lot.

We are always open to positive suggestions as to how to solve this problem.

Sub-forum. :)

if we sub-forum it - I covered that alternative. We've actually seen an actual solution get pushed off the front page
Not everything can be on the front page. That's just life and how adults learn that forums work. Big news about rooting or some awesome new tip or trick won't be in the main "Samsung Captivate" board, and is going to be buried in a sub-forum. Big news about the Captivate won't be in the "Android Phones" board. Big news about some popular app that is used by most Captivate users won't be here and might be in the main "Android Applications" board.

As the saying goes: if everything is on top.... nothing is. Organization is key. Yes, either way you're going to have people who complain... but it seems right now the stance is "because people are going to complain either way let's just leave things as they are" instead of "if we're going to upset some people regardless, let's do the the right and sensible thing and just upset the people who don't like that as we try to get them on-board as team players using proper board structure".

And for the record: I voted in that suggestion box. ;) But as a forum admin myself, you can't just resort to inaction simply because you didn't get enough votes on a topic. Feedback is useful in decision making, but the admins still need to take action regardless of the amount of feedback received. The current "everything in one wastebasket" system for GPS and Froyo issues only appeals to those who aren't interested in the topic. It does not serve those that are... and in fact, makes life a nightmare for them. Sub-boards get the topics out-of-sight for those who don't care, while providing organized topics for those who do... the same way we don't have just a "Samsung Captivate" board and a lumped-together "All other Android phones" thread/board.

This forum has a nice and slick "Favorite Forums" feature. Admins should make the needed sub-boards and then the mods should be encouraging people to use this feature. ;) Used properly and as-designed and intended, there should be no complaints... and if there are, they'll instead be from people who just need to be guided in the right direction and in how to use the tools available, and not from overlooked people with legitimate gripes.

Well there is no need to call anyone a lier..... The 2 employees had Froyo on there personal phones (non Captivates). And by 2.2 we mean Froyo not build numbers. Alls I did was come here to see what others were experiencing not an argument.

Thanks sremick - mods propose, admins dispose.

We may go to the new system, it's undecided so far as I know.

Until then - any helpful pointers from the community - start an attn EarlyMon & mods thread if you like - (where? tips and tricks? my PM inbox? maybe even the Lounge - others have device-specific threads there, so that's a good place - or Suggestion Box - or I can a sticky here in main - I'll work with you guys) collate your suggestions on what works for the Captivate crowd, and I'll do my best to accommodate - remember - I cannot make sub-forums, that's an admin thing and their stack is deep.

And I think it's harsh to call these two threads wastebaskets. You don't see me walking away or not posting as helpfully as I can - I got here when the problem was clear to me, I didn't create it, I didn't do the first merges.

And given that I've devoted nearly an hour just to this gripe, I don't think I'm trying to overlook anything legitimate from anyone.

All sides have now been heard from on this. Further gripes or responses in this thread, I'm going to delete as off-topic because I've made good alternative suggestions on where to further any discussion on this, with me personally or publicly or with me and other mods publicly. I can do more from inside here.

Jshoe, I looked back quickly over the forum and didn't see an answer to this, so I spologize in advance if you already provided this info...

Did you end up buying a new captivate? Did you get an update to 2.2?

There are many custom ROMS out there running froyo. Under settings for "about phone", those ROMS will show the phone is running 2.2. Those are not running an "official version of froyo. Is it possible that the employees you spoke to were running unofficial ROMs?

Shellbster,

I appreciate the response. I was told it was an official version that came OTA. They indicated that they also have sold several that have shown 2.2 as the OS Version. I did not buy it yet... I wanted to check here first but all I seem to get is arguments. =)

there isnt,,,,

but i still dont get who told you there was a release,,

radio shack guys have froyo on non captivate,,,

this is where i get confused,,

where does that mean captivate has foyo??

EDIT/UPDATE: Ahhh I see where all of this misinformation is coming from
The 2 employees had Froyo on there personal phones (non Captivates). And by 2.2 we mean Froyo not build numbers. Alls I did was come here to see what others were experiencing not an argument.
Here's an important piece of information. Maybe the employees you spoke to weren't knowledgeable enough or maybe they didn't know you were referring specifically to the captivate. Froyo is out but it has to be modified for every model phone. So these employees probably had a different android phone like the droid x or evo. It can take (samsung) months for the update to be released to all phones.

The official release isn't out yet, with no internal buzz of a time yet, according to Samsuck's PR. I have been heckling them every hour or so, so to shut me up they would throw me a bone like "it is shipping on newer-manufactured phones" or even that it is very close. At this point all they are saying is that it still is being tested, and that the timeframe is not measured in days but rather weeks, so next week at the earliest I guess...

What I am hoping although I doubt it is that they said that the update may not have hit all of the phones yet and would be coming out in phases. So you got all this info over the phone? Is this why you couldn't immediately get a phone and try to update it in store. Figures that it would be easier for them to lie over the phone.
No I was in store....

In @jshoe22's defense, I just caught a Sprint employee telling someone that the Epic 4G's update is coming "any day now" here at the mall. So I would wager many of these salesmen are planning on that as selling point... I didn't correct him in front of his customer but maybe I should have.

That gives me a little better confidence in the buying public though, if they know enough to ask about Android updating schedules...
