Root ROOTING For Dummies

Not sure if this has been covered... sorry if repeat
I had issues flashing some things and decided to unroot/ restore and re root.
This worked for me before
This Time I forgot to take the PC36IMG off of my SD card. Using unrevolked it failed to root telling me my firmware was to new:eek:
Anyway I removed the 361 zip file that unrooted me... ran unrevolked again and all is well.... my guess is that it held something up during the reboot.
My bad:)

WOOHOO! After a week of reading and reasearch I'm finally rooted.

I have one question that I couldn't find the answer for. I DL a few ROMs to my SD card and Flashed one to my phone. After I rebooted I play with the for a lil bit then I did a NAND back up and Flashed a different ROM, rebooted and NAND back up again.

My questions is:
Do I need to keep the zip file on my SD card after I flashed it and did a NAND back up.

Thanks

DEVICE: HTC EVO 4G
ROOT METHOD: unrEVOked 3.21
ROM: Calkulin's EViO 1.7.7

It's usually a good idea to keep the zip of your current ROM on your sdcard, only because it can be a quick way to fix most issues you might cause. It's a faster way to fix things (in your current ROM only) without restoring a nandroid backup. Otherwise, though, you don't need to keep it. Once it's flashed, the system doesn't need it.

What I do is keep 3 or so ROMS that I know are good on my SD card in the backup folder that CW creates. I usually delete the base ROMs after I flash them, from my SD card but keep them in a folder on my desktop. All of the others I transfer to my computer just to keep them if needed. Be sure to name them so that you know what each of them are. I am pretty descriptive with mine, just because I'm anal like that.

Since I bounce back and forth so much it's nice to have them all named so that I know what they are and am not guessing. Hope that helps.

Pushing recovery, how long should this process take. it went over night, but nothing happened from there. just tried it again for 15 minutes. please help!

Thanks a ton for the write-up. The process was smooth and very easy to understand.
This is my first attempt to root and have been researching for quite some time.

I had no problems with any process here and the instructions were clear. Everything seemed to work perfectly.

Thanks again!

I know this isn't necessarily part of this thread, but I tried starting a thread in the epic 4g forums and I haven't got an answer yet, so I thought I would try to post here. I've also searched all over google, xda forums, and these forums and can't seem to find any definite answer.

I am trying to text a contact(vcard) to my sister who has an Epic 4g and I have an Evo 4g. I can send it and she gets the text but there's nothing in vcard. Is this possible to do? Is there something on her end that she is not doing correctly or is there an app she needs to make this work?

TIA

Nick

Hi everyone, thanks for the great write up. So I just followed everything in the guide and rooted for the first time ever and installed the MUIU rom and I've been playing for a little and its great. no issues so far. I got to flash the kernel and am a little confused. do I still need to flash a kernel with this rom? I have the latest 1.1.28 "Kernel: Savage 1.6 CFS WiMax SBC (you should know by now which kernel you personally prefer, feel free to flash a different one)
Includes: MIUI Apps, all updates up to official 1.1.28 from miui.com
Features: Stock MIUI for Evo"

If I still need to flash a kernel which one do I need?
my phone is an HTC evo 4g with the latest updates.

Thank you so much.

Every ROM comes with a kernel already "packaged" with it. Most sense based ROM's come with a stock kernel (ie: HTC #17, #15)....I'm not sure if there's a specific kernel that usually comes with an AOSP ROM stock.

There are custom kernels you can flash if you want to change it from the kernel the ROM you're using comes with. Read the threads of the ROM's you flash to see if the Dev recommends a specific kernel.

when i go into the clockwork recovery screen pressing the power button toggles a black screen rather than making a selection on my incredible.

Any suggestions?

This confuses me right from the beginning...

If I complete Step 1 & 2 in the Pre-Root then I have nothing on my phone, correct? All data, SMS, VM, Apps, etc are all gone. What's the point in doing Step 3 to back up my apps after I erased everything in Step 2? All I'm going to be doing is making a list of the stock/default apps for the Evo, no?

Can't I do Step 3 first, move the file created by App List Backup from the SD card to my PC, complete Step 1 & 2 and then move the app.abl back to the SD card when the root is complete?

Also, how does rooting affect AppBrain? Can I root and then reinstall all my apps through AB?

STEP 1: Factory Data Reset (optional, but recommended)
You may feel more comfortable completely wiping your phone and starting from scratch. This will help with the NAND backup later if you choose to have a fresh safe IMAGE (copy) of your phone in case something happens when you FLASH a ROM.
Menu > Setting > SD & Phone Storage > Factory Data Reset > Reset Phone > Erase Everything

STEP 2: Format SD Card (optional, but recommended)
There is always a possibility of some random errors with changing the internals of your device, and there are times when the SD Card plays a roll in some of the hiccups. So Formatting the SD Card is recommended.. REMEMBER do save any Pictures or Important Files!
Menu > Setting > SD & Phone Storage > Unmount SD Card (then) Format SD card > Format SD Card
(NOTE: If you do not choose to format your SD Card, then you can simply Unmount It instead.)

STEP 3: App List Backup (optional)
Download an application called App List Backup from the Market.
It will save a list the currently installed applications from the Downloads section of the Market and save them to your SD Card.
After you reinstall the application from a Factory Reset or a Wipe, you can load the file and the Market will have all of your previously installed applications ready for you to download back onto your phone. Saves you a lot of time from writing them all down, then finding them, and re-downloading them all over again.

Also, you know how some applications like Titanium Backup save a backup of the actual .apk in the SD Card, then it installs them back onto your device, but you still have to go through every application and re-download them so you can receive updated? No more. App List Backup will do all the leg-work for you!!

That's a good point actually. Yes, you'll want to backup your apps, first, if you intend to wipe everything. Note that you don't always have to wipe first. Many people are able to successfully root without wiping. Keep in mind, though, that if you run into issues, that's potentially a big reason why. Also, one option that's not really in the guide is to get temp root (just root in your ROM) with z4root, then install titanium backup, backup everything with it, uninstall titanium backup and z4root, then reboot. That will take your phone back to the way it was, but give you a more complete backup before you even start the unrevoked process. At that point, you can wipe everything as to not have to worry about it being an issue, root with unrevoked, then restore everything with titanium backup. Keep in mind I haven't tried that, but it's theoretically sound.

It is optional BUT recommended. You don't *have* to do a full wipe, it's always better to start fresh.

Went ahead and did the root without wiping any data, worked like a charm! Tested everything and no issues/bugs. Granted I'm just at the beginning it's still nice to kick things off without a hitch.

On the Droid Incredible, you need to press the Track Ball instead of the Power Button to make the selection. Figured that out on my Wife's Droid. :p

Hey everybody, this is my first ever post

Did everything that was suppose to on my EVO. So I don't believe there is any issue on that part. However unrEVOked stalls while "killing any adb daemons". I even left it on like that for about an hour and no luck.

Running Win7 x64 i5

What could be the problem?

EDIT: antivirus is off

Trying to root with unrevoked
Have tried for while unsuccessfully:( First, downloaded both usb and unrevoked3 and uninstalled HTC Sync. Updated driver it now says Android Bootloader Interface. When I tried to run unrevoked, it gets stuck at 'installing unrevoked3 service...' then an error: 'Internal error:installing package failed'.

So.....I did a factory reset and still get the same error
Then.... installed HTC Sync, again same error

Any help would be much appreciated:)

Hey andy! I am going to go out on a limb here, and suggest that you reboot your computer. And give a another try. Also, I know that HTC needs to be uninstalled, you just need the drivers from it. And be sure your anti-virus is turned off on the computer.. Try these, at least until one of the EVO gurus gets a chance to reply! ;)

(If nothing else, at least it bumped the thread for you)

I was going through your list of apps that are ok to freeze and I don't see on there where it's ok to freeze the stock messaging app, if I am using handcent SMS. I assume it's ok to freeze/uninstall that? I would assume freeze would be better?

Just thought I would give Handcent a try, but I hate hearing my notifications twice.

Thanks.

Nope! Do not freeze or delete it, unless you don't want to receive SMSs. Any messaging app requires the stock messaging app to work. Just turn off notifications in the stock app.
