Atrix vs Inspire

Thats because with the Atrix you can easily turn airplane mode on, remove sim, turn wifi on, browse market and install apps you normally couldn't. Dunno why your making such a big deal out of a feature that the Atrix 4g already has

its a big deal becacuse its the first AT&T phone that doesnt need that gay work around to sideload an app

Who cares?

It takes me 30 seconds to turn on airplane mode, remove sim card, and turn on wifi

Just sounds like your grasping for straws in order to try and convince yourself that the Inspire is better out of nothing. Spec wise the Atrix 4g is better so instead you make big deal out of a 30 second procedure that makes or breaks your decision?

No i agree...that is a relatively minor procedure but still....things like that can be a PITA to have to always go and do.

AS far as the specs...yes i agree totally. If only we had software to use them id be on board with your conclusion.

So basically, i agree with your premise...but i think your conclusion is not above having holes punched in it.

When the First dual cores come out from Intel and AMD...the extra cores were pretty much paper weights. Utilized for little more than "bragging rights".

So i guess this debate can rage on forever but basically we will just have to wait and see what comes out in the wash.

Edited to say: I still think the Atrix will be 5%-10% faster at times even without optimization. This wont justify the cost or motoblur...not to mention the locking issues etc. For gamers though..this would be the phone to get...i give you that.

no its not normal and I find it surprising that all the atrix peeps arent commenting on the video showing the inspire does allow sideloading? HMMMMMM????

Sorry, I was away from my phone and computer for a bit (dinner). AT&T has stated officially numerous times, in numerous places, in numerous ways that they will not allow sideloading on AT&T branded devices, not now, not ever. They view it as a security risk and liability, and made it abundantly clear that it simply will not happen. Google "AT&T" and "sideloading" and you can find many articles covering this debacle when it broke back in the summer/early fall. "Ever" and "will not happen" are pretty strong words for executives to go back on in under a year. I would wager that either:
1. This was a pre-release phone or demo/review unit
2. HTC simply didn't disable it and either will by release or the first update will shortly after launch
or
3. HTC negotiated some sort of retraction of policy or special allotment from AT&T.

Of the three options 1 or 2 seem much more likely, and were I a bettin' man, where my money would be on this.

PS: I have been railing against this with them since July, and they have never given an inch when admitting to the reasons why or possibility of doing it in the future.

Update: Plus, my friend the manager just replied back to me saying that "it will shock the hell out of [him]" if it launches being able to sideload. He said that is the first thing they are told to check for when they receive a complaint or return (non-market apps and root, then task killers).

How they check for "non-market" apps I have no idea- Beta releases maybe? or just unusual apps? he hasn't elaborated yet, but he insists that is still heavily the company's official policy. So we'll see when it launches I guess.

I look at it like this, how many apps are out there that need to be sideloaded? I have a few as many people i know have maybe ten, its hardly an inconvenience to do the workaround for that many apps.

I don't even consider it a workaround... Sideload Wonder Machine works great, as does ADB. There's also the airplane mode/wifi trick, I mean it really isn't an issue (to anyone familiar with it)...

It was less of an inconvenience than I thought it would be with the Craptivate. Betas and test apps (like the Phandroid app and the pre-market pre-froyo Flash player) and keyboards/live wallpapers are the only things I have used it for in like a year.

why do they check for task manager?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Atrix will be able to be sideloaded AND rooted (just not being able to replace the kernel) within a week of the phone being released. If it's anything like the Droid X (which you can't sideload apps as well) it'll be as easy as getting z4root on your phone, hitting "Root," and then done.

Second off, MotoBlur on a phone isn't a negative. Why? Because LP and ADW are better than even Sense! Who cares what the stock UI is!

really why because of dual cores? there are many things that make this phone crappy without its webtop dock.

locked boot
motoblur
no sideloading
gonna have no full ROMs
Only a 5mp camera
plasticky cheap body

so whats left dual cores? That really isnt gonna make many people buy this all the other stuff added to the value now big whoop

locked boot: Not an issue if the phone works as it should. I don't need custom ROMS, rooting, etc. if the phone is completely functional (unlike my Captivate ).
motoblur: Seems as though motoblur is a "package" that allows for integrated contact management. It doesn't really change the UI of the phone (unlike Sense). Just don't use it if you don't like it.
no sideloading: There's always a way around this. I would wait until the phone comes out to say that there will be no sideloading.
gonna have no full ROMs : See the first item on the list.
Only a 5mp camera: I'm not printing posters with the pictures my phone is gong to take. A 5mp can easily print 8 x 11 photos.
plasticky cheap body: Have you actually held the phone? Just because it's plastic, doesn't mean it will feel cheap.

The dual-core CPU and 1 GB RAM ensures that this phone will be able to handle OS and apps of the future. The 1900 mAh battery is a huge plus.

That is not sideloading. It does not allow you to install non-market apps.

AT&T, under no circumstances, will allow the sideloading of applications. I guarantee you that even if it slipped through the cracks it will be "fixed" in short order. Remember the HTC desktop app that was quickly "fixed"? Remember the easy tethering on the captivate that was quickly "fixed".

It really doesn't matter anyway because of the click and run sideloading (using ADB) solution that's all over the internet.

You certainly like posting in the Atrix forum about how great the Inspire is. Are you trying to justify your decision or do you just like pointing out how others are wrong in Andrea world?

This is exactly my points and how i feel too. I feel like people are trying to justify staying away from this phone based on non-realistic ideas and a lack of understanding about the features of the phone. Like it is some sort of race to get the most followers to whatever side, sometimes even spreading opinions and mis-information as fact- i don't care what everyone else does, i am getting this phone.

Ditto

This reminds of the good ol' times when it was EVO vs. Incredible, Incredible vs. Droid X, and especially Droid X vs. EVO. Anyone who isn't using their respective device will leave shortly after the release date of the phone... at least from my experience. Until then... people will linger around to argue that their phone is better or how much a certain phone sucks. All of this bickering about HTC Inspire vs. Motorola Atrix 4G on the Motorola Atrix 4G subforum is annoying.

Some notes:

1. If you've never used the latest version of Motoblur... you can't really say anything about it. It would be the same to someone saying Sense sucks and intrusive without ever using Sense to form an educated opinion.

2. Lens and sensor > megapixel count. The iPhone 4 has already proven that easily and still has hands down the best smartphone camera on the market.

3. No one or VERY few people on this forum has ever touched this phone... so why are there people formulating conclusions on build quality already?

Great points on this phone:

1. Dual-core processor. Why? This phone has such great potential to get even better over time for the next 2 years (going by every 2 year upgrades). The speed of this phone is hardly even close to its peak, as we all know with the limitations of current Android 2.2 and 2.3. When Android 3.1 (or whatever first dual-core supporting Android OS comes for smartphones), the dual-core processor will finally be able to be fully utilized by apps. Would you rather have a dual-core or single-core processor phone for the next 2 years?

2. SCREEN! The 800x480 resolution has been used ever since November 2009. I love that Motorola is finally bringing a screen with an higher resolution, which will be better for text in particular. I'm amazed that it has taken so long for a better screen to come along. The 800x480 resolution will be trumped by phones coming later this year when all newer phones come with higher resolution screens to try to match Apple's "Retina" display (which beats any 800x480 resolution display). PPI is important. The 960 x 540 resolution on a 4" screen is much better than 800 x 480 on a 4.3" screen. 275 PPI vs. 217 PPI.

3. The battery size is absolutely huge. I praise Motorola with going with such a huge battery. It's really unprecedented and very welcome. Hopefully... <1500mAh batteries will be a thing of the past.

4. 1GB DDR2 RAM. Do I have to explain?

why do they check for task manager?

Sorry to be tardy to the party, they check because many people use/run task killers without knowing what tasks they are ending and what processes ending that task might interrupt. This is a major reason for memory leaks, lag, and problematic experiences (force closes), such as force closing "talk" the google chat app can sign you out of the market. Technically Android doesn't need a task killer app for memory management, but I do use one for battery life. They care because lack of knowing what task killing really is and does leads to most android complaints they receive.

Ok I dot
Know anything about android but I had a captivate for 2 months and I had a task manager and killed everything so i could save battery... You say that's bad what should one close??? To save battery?

I set mine up to leave open my launcher (home), live wallpaper, widgets and their necessary services, things i want to keep running (email, gmail, etc.), and lastly the things like talk and other necessary services. Everything else i kill...

Would you rather have a dual-core or single-core processor phone for the next 2 years?

This is what I'm trying to decide. Get the Atrix on a 2 year contract, or buy something like the Thunderbolt on a 1 year contract at Verizon. If Android isn't ready to take advantage of dual core until later this year, then the reason for getting the Atrix because it's dual core is moot. And by the time dual core is ready for primetime, phones with Tegra 3, 4, etc. will be out.

who keeps a phone for 2 years any more hahaha...

2 years ago from today the only smart phones made for the general consumer were iphone, and to some extent blackberries. I think the first android phone was just coming out as well.

2 years ago would you have even thought about dual cores, different operating systems...

my advice:

step 1 - pick the carrier that give you the best service
step 2 - pick the device that will give you what you are looking for

the Atrix and the Inspire both bring new and exciting features to the table, but you and I both know that come quarter 2, (and come MWC nextweek) there will already be phones out that blow either phone out of the water.

I know the Inspire will get blown out the water but I'm pretty sure nothing is going to blow ATRIX out of the water. Sure there will be comparable offerings from samsung and htc but nothing that is going to crush the ATRIX. We already know LG's lineup and I much prefer ATRIX to their Optimus line of phones.
