It seems like a lot of dust would come in.
I'm thinking about doing it, but I'm not really sure, since my friends play with my phone a lot, so...
 
Are the plastic covers really scratched on these before and after pictures? I took the back off my phone and did a comparison, and it didn't make any difference :confused: still looks a bit grainy

I thought I'd let you all know that you can get a replacement cover (albiet with the same problematic plastic lense cover) from HTCPedia for USD$20

Did anyone manage to source a cheap glass cover?

If you do remove the plastic cover, is there any danger of damaging anything when dust will eventually go in?

Not exactly cheap, but I used the sapphire glass window from edmund optics mentioned earlier in this thread. It cost about £25 delivered, but should probably be cheaper in the US, as it shipped from there I think. It's been in a few months now and the picture quality is as good as the day it went in.
The phone is always getting put down on it's back onto hard surfaces, and the metal surround for the lens cover is looking very tired indeed, but the cover itself looks pristine. Well worth the money in my opinion...
 
Other than replacing/removing the plastic window, the single most thing I do to increase the sharpness of a photo is to use the two-second self timer. Pushing the optical track ball is a terrible way to release the shutter as it simply jerks the phone at the time of release. If you set it on self-timer at least you have time to steady the phone before it shoots resulting in much sharper pics (at least for me). Try it.

Another great tip, thanks. :D

I totally agree that pushing the trackball can cause handshake sometimes and now that we've all popped our lens covers off to get clean crisp pics getting a last minute blur because of that seem to defeat the object of the exercise.

And for the people still worried about scratches/dust on the lens etc. it's been about 3 months for me now with nothing covering the lens and I've had no probs.
 
If you use the Vignette app, you can push and hold the trackball and the picture will be taken when you release it. Might help some people with the shakes; certainly helps me.
 
Take the cover off the back of the phone.

From the inside out, push it out with something fairly blunt. I used an old ball point pen.

give it a slightly more force than feels comfortable.

There is a very good chance the thing will break in the process, the plastic disc, not the back cover.

@ balders...i couldnot notice the difference either....

Can someone post a pic of the hole that is left after popping out the plastic camera covering? Would be interesting to see if it changes the outlook of the back cover?
 
when I said I couldn't see anything, I meant I couldn't see anything at all.

As in no images on the hosting site.

your right, not really a noticeable difference. Just a slight change in hue.

Maybe they sorted out their covers on the later releases.
