Root [UPDATED 28/12 - NEW INSTALLER] CyanogenMod 7/Android 2.3.4 Is avaliable for GT540!

Ok iv'e never had this problem but i have read a couple things about it,
a couple of the fixes are to format the sd card make sure it's formated to FAT32 and reflash cyanogenmod, also some people have to reflash CM7 like 3 times before SD card will work, another thing is if you have ever tried to partition your SD cards the may be broken do you know what class SD card you are trying to use.

Lee

PS. If your going to Format the SD card transfer your pictures music and videos to your PC first.

i have a class 6, 8gb card. i dunno the manufacturer though... and yes, i partitioned it before, but then i reverted it back so now there's only one partition... and yes i formatted it to fat32 at least twice, but i haven't really tried reflashing CM7 more than twice, so maybe i should try reflashing it again??.... but also, i reverted back to CM6 and it reads my sdcard, so i'm thinking it's not my sd card's fault.

Which one do you recommend?

I very highly recommend not using any task killer at all, they interfere with how the Android system works:

"In Android, processes and Applications are two different things. An app can stay "running" in the background without any processes eating up your phone's resources. Android keeps the app in its memory so it launches more quickly and returns to its prior state. When your phone runs out of memory, Android will automatically start killing tasks on its own, starting with ones that you haven't used in awhile."

"The problem is that Android uses RAM differently than, say, Windows. On Android, having your RAM nearly full is a good thing. It means that when you relaunch an app you've previously opened, the app launches quickly and returns to its previous state. So while Android actually uses RAM efficiently, most users see that their RAM is full and assume that's what's slowing down their phone. In reality, your CPU—which is only used by apps that are actually active—is almost always the bottleneck."

"That said, not all apps are created equal. Many of you have used task killers in the past and actually found that after freeing up memory, your phone works a bit better. It's more likely that this is because you've killed a bad app—one that was poorly coded, and (for example) keeps trying to connect to the internet even when it shouldn't. Any performance increase you experience is more likely because you killed the right app, not because you freed up loads of memory (or, in many cases, it's just placebo). Instead of killing all those apps, find out which ones are actually causing the problems."
(taken from http://uk.lifehacker.com/5650894/)

I've highlighted the most important parts in those paragraphs; Android is it's own way of dealing with RAM efficiently, and killing an app will most likely just start it up again, which uses CPU power, which is the actual cause for low performance/battery. If you find that when you kill apps, it does help and give a performance boost, it's probably because, as stated above, that the app has been poorly coded, or that it's just a placebo (when you think that doing something actually has an effect when in reality it doesn't - mind tricks)

You really should read the whole article (here and see why task killers are no good). Also, Google "Why you shouldn't use a task killer" for more reasons and explanations as to why they're evil apps.

Hi, I have noticed that the compass does not work in version 2.3.2 or 2.3.3. I am not sure about the accelerometers. I am planning a trip and need to use the compass. For directions and geotagging photos.

I have noticed that there has been some discussion about recalibrating the sensors, and I saw here ( xda-developers - View Single Post - LG GT540 - SwiftDroid Project - (O.S. 2.3.2), by Mur4ik ) that the compass and the accelerometers are handled together.

I would like to ask if anyone has fixed their compass? If so, how?

Does this mean the navigation part of the phone doesn't work now ?

Well, I suppose you could say that it is not as useful. The compass needle just spins around so you cannot find North. In Google Maps it uses gps to work out your location, but the direction you are facing is not correct.

If you use the app GSP status to look at gps satelites, the compass thing just spins around.

I have not tried it, but I suppose if you are moving the gps system will work out the direction you are travelling, but I am not really sure about that.

I wanted to take photos using geotagging so I could use the images for landscape reference, etc.

The compass worked fine in the LG 2.1 version I had, but as far as I know there is no way to reinstall that. Anyway, other features of 2.3.3 are too cool. The compass must be the most old-school thing about a smart phone.

other features like what?could you enumerate them please...:)

other features like what?could you enumerate them please...:)

Features I like in android 2.3.3 (the first few that come to mind):

- battery percentage on status line at top of screen (a cyanogen feature) (2.3.2 allowed you to view the battery status on the lock screen, the status line is an extra in 2.3.3)

- power control bar has selectable features (eg, you can remove the blue tooth icon if you want, you can also add icons like a button for airplane mode or silent) pretty sure this was there in 2.3.2, but not as configurable in 2.1

- 2.3.3 has an FM radio, but does not have an auto tune feature like a car radio. You need to type in all the channels you want. The antenna is in the head phone cable, and I think it sounds slightly worse than the radio in the stock android 1.6.

- 2.2.3 has a music widget that is 4x1, it works like a music library, but I think it is not a standard google android app. The standard music widget available in 2.2.2 is also in 2.3.3, but it is 4x2 and does not work the same way.

- the google maps in 2.3.3 work very rapidly and I believe work off line. The gps also locks much quicker than in 2.3.2.

- the camera seems to work reliably, if you start it with the camera short cut on the screen. On my phone the camera button does not always start the camera up so that it functions. sometimes I get a black screen using the hardware button.

- in general i think 2.3.3 is more responsive than 2.3.2 and uses less battery. but I still charge it every night.

- 2.3.3 does let you search the gsm networks in your area, but I do not really need that feature as I only have one sim.

- I am using the setcpu-like features built into 2.3.3. I used setcpu on 2.3.2, not sure why. probably because I thought I had to, but am not sure.

- 2.3.3 seems to mean that i need to install fewer apps myself on the phone. (no battery monitor, no wifi on/off toggle switch for when at home)

- the double-tap pinch alternative works much better in 2.3.3 than in 2.3.2. I can easily zoom more easily, move around the screen and high light text in 2.3.3.

- I really wanted the wifi toggle functionality available in 2.3 to share the 3G data with my laptop, but the native android functions do not work. so the "proper" buttons for wifi toggling in the menu system do not work. I had some problems pressing them in 2.3.2 and the phone needed rebooting. In 2.3.3 they just do nothing. I have installed the app called wifi toggle for root and it works fine.

- you need to install patches for both 2.3.2 and 2.3.3. be aware of that.

This list is by no means complete, but are just a few things that sprang to mind. I hope it helps and answers your question. I am really happy. But I would really like the compass to work as well! But I am really happy with it.

Thanks to everyone in the group for helping me along the way.

Does this mean that wifi/mute/gps/bluetooth cannot be tuned on and off using the drag down menu? If so, including the GPS problems ie compass direction not working, this version seems to have created more bugs than the last one.

In the 2.2 custom rom the compass works fine.

Other issues some people have are..... can any confirm these?

When using an app, if you press the home button nothing happens.

Camera zoom works but if you take a picture it shows normal instead of zoomed.

Pressing the back button while making a call will cut off the call being made.

MMS not working. (correct APN details entered)

wifi/mute/gps/bluetooth can be turned off using the drag down menu im not sure how well gps/compass works i never use it but i can say 2.3.3 1.5 is a much smoother version :)

i just installed a compass from d market and it seems to work fine points north an south perfect are u talkin about the compass in the navagation ??

Yes for sat nav and position location etc.

ive just tested mine ive never used it before it found were i am but when i turn around with it it just points back to north should it be pointin at south when im facein south ?

edit for some reason it seems to work now maybe it takes a min to become stable ?

anyone hav a problem with phone switching off by its self an wont turn on till u remove the bat an put it back in ?

Thanks for the offer to help, but my phone did not work with that rom. i remember that there were continuous errors and i could not use it as a phone. I do not think I would be satisfied with the phone even if I could restore it to the LG android 2.1 upgrade (without fastboot). The gingerbread screen layout with the green colour and the 3G/H indication on data seems to provide more user feedback than the 2.1 screen.

nice one!..that's a lot of changes...do you think the next version would fix most of the problems you encounter?

i just installed a compass from d market and it seems to work fine points north an south perfect are u talkin about the compass in the navagation ??
I also have compass from the market. the address window at the top works fine, because its info is from the gps. I installed it using the app my backup for root from the previous setup. Maybe I should delete it and reinstall.

I turned it on just now. The arrow should point north, but was pointing NW. I rotated the phone through 180 degrees and the arrow is now pointing SW. It is not moving around at the moment, but seems to flicker by around 90 degrees. I can not seem to make sense of it - either way it is not a useful compass to help you navigate.

I just uninstalled compass and installed the app smart compass lite from the market. It looks cool, but behaves the same.

It looks like the software is not working properly with the magnetic field detectors.

Thanks for the info about the 2.2 compass.

The drag down menu works fine, I just have trouble getting it to open. I put power control on the home screen. Power control has the brightness button, the drag down menu does not do screen brightness.

On my phone the home button seems to work, but the long press seems more sensitive than in 2.3.2. I usually go to the task manager on first press, then to the home screen on second press.

the comment about the camera is correct. the zoom does seem to work, but the photo is not zoomed.

I am not sure about MMS. I have never ever sent one.
