Root ROOTING For Dummies

When you boot the phone does it go through the sprint splash screen? Does it look different than it was when you had it rooted? What is the software version and such in about phone after you boot it up?

No it doesnt go through sprint splash screen. It did after I unrooted it. But in the root just a white screen with HTC and then to the home page. Yes it looks different because I had the Unleashed Rom on the other rooted one.

Looks like you have current software and radios. PRL is a little old but if it works for you, you might be good to leave it alone. If you need to, go to settings>about phone> system updates and select update PRL. Latest is 60676 I think. Other than that you should be good to go. Just make sure to make a nandroid backup of your current set up and make one before making any changes to your phone. Glad you got it. Any other questions, feel free to ask

nice koolaid glad we got you unrooted and re-rooted. just fyi my current prl is 60677. and like xtremedays said nandroid are your best friend.

I am assuming you are using Clockwork Mod for recovery as it is the default used in Unrevoked. You will need to reboot to recovery. There should be an option for backup/restore. You need to select backup and confirm. It makes a backup of exactly the way your phone is now, kind of like taking a photo of it. If something happens, you can restore the phone to the way it was when the backup was made. Doing this whenever you change your phone allows you to easily return to a working phone if something goes wrong when you flash something.

If you read some of the "after rooting" section of the Rooting Guide, it will explain more about it and give you directions to do it also.

Thank you sir. I downloaded titanium backup. Do I go to the backup option and press each one of the apps and back them up?

I tried looking for the backup procedures but couldn't really find it. Could you kindly guide me to it with a link if possible.

You can also do a batch backup by press menu and select batch then select all user apps and do a batch bacup. You can do the same thing for restoring apps as well.

This list of Apps to freeze appears to be past due for an update. Many of the app names have now changed, and some of the ones listed don't even appear anymore as named, while there are lots of new ones. On this, here are the ones I've frozen so far on my phone:

Amazon MP3 - No thank you.
App Sharing - I don't share apps (I don't even know what that means)
Blockbuster - Seriously, why is this crap on my phone?
Calculator (and widget) - I use a better RPN style calculator

All I can say is that even though its 'idiot-proof,' I had to uninstall/install/reinstall a lot of stuff (especially drivers via windows 7) just so the process would finally go smooth. Thanks everyone who helped. Now I have to deal with backing everything up...but I'm loving it!

Just wanted to thank all of you for a clear instructions for rooting the htc evo. Tried many times, however, each was told firmware was too new. Noticed each time half way thru download zycl? would stop the download. Later found this was in programs and deleted it. After that unrevoked went smoothly. now have wireless tether. Thanks again.

My bro-in-law is finally (I got my evo July 23rd and he got his 3 weeks later) letting me root his. Already downloaded all the new drivers etc. SO excited!!!!! I'll report back tomorrow.

I'm going to go ahead and put this out there. You should really use AmonRa for all your flashing needs from the get go. Just go in to ROM Manager and scroll to the bottom and select the flash alternate recovery and flash that.

I am not familiar with the HTC Desire but if it is similar to the Evo, you might need to flash the RUU through hboot to get it back to stock then try and reroot it. Have you looked at the HTC Desire forums?

I recommend you use Amon RA Recovery in lieu of using Clockworkmod, overall, it's just a much better recovery. If you're using ROM Manager to flash ROM's, go to "flash alternate recovery" and that will install Amon RA for you. If you're not using ROM Manager, then you can find Amon RA Recovery files here:

I have Rom Manager but Amon Ra recovery. When I went to "flash alternate recovery" it is greyed out and says I must have Clockwork. I use Amon Ra manually but is there a way to use it through Rom Manager now or will I just need to get rid of Rom Manager?

Amon RA does not work with Rom Manager. Rom manager is the front end so to speak of Clockwork mod. You would have to do everything through recovery which I and others recommend anyway.

That's what I thought and that works for me. I'm accustomed to flashing manually on my Optimus

2nd Evo...ROOTED! It's my bro in laws. His is only a month old (he dropped the org too much) so it has the newest hboot etc. Had to run unrevoked 3 times. 1st 2 said "root failed. Is your software to new?" 3rd time it said done and dumped me into recovery which is fine cuz it's rooted.

I tried to download/install titanium backup (via Marketplace) and got the error message that said it couldn't acquire root privileges. Also, it said it needed Busybox. Should I have installed that first, then titanium backup?
