Today I Upgraded From My Desire...

lekky

Lover
Hey peeps, today i upgraded to the LG Optimus 2X.

I know a lot of you guys are thinknig about your next phones, so will tell you why I did what I did.

1. The contract I got is in my opinion, way too good to turn down, details below:

Orange
18 month contract

Enjoy the new phone. :)
How do you feel about the speaker quality, the UI, battery life, the overall performance?

I assume it runs on stock Froyo, but hopefully more GB roms will be available.
The rumor is that there is a Tegra 2 version of SGS2, but it will be available only on selected countries.

Lekky what do you think of the phone itself (hardware)? I've been dubious about the likes of LG's past android hansets. I just didn't think they compared build quality and material wise to the likes of my HTC Desire. Then this came out, and I loved it's looks, much more like an iPhone, but I was still unsure?

Also, I have always hated the LG UI as I just felt it looked a little naff compared to sense. But I hear the new one is different? What are your thoughts on that aspect of the phone?

Thanks.

This phone has some interesting looking specs but Ive had a rough time with LG phones in the past so Im kinda steering away from this one. It sounds too good to be true!

Slightly off topic. Williamj1 guess what? Eevek finally made contact on XDA! He is gona see if the GB MIUI is worth looking at!

LG is becoming the next big boy in Android, they made great smartphones before jumping on with Android (though I didn't like its Chocolate and Voyager much), now only if the Optimus 2X or something similar makes its way to Canada but by then I'll probably have upgraded to a newer variant of Desire or something.

Oh and how the hell did you land a 1.5 year contract? Evil Canadian carriers has 3 years, which is really stupid.

European Law is meant to rule out these mortgage type contracts in May so I will wait till then to even think of getting a new phone. So from May we can now get 12 month contracts for a decent price so I will probably opt for the Desire S if Orange or Tesco gets it, but hope you enjoy your new phone

I couldn't resist. I flashed 1.4.1 anyway and its great. But I'd certainly swap to Eevek's if he released a GB one :)

Where did he confirm this? I PM'D him last week and he said he would look into it, but nothing final.

He just said he'd look into it today! So lets hope he likes it enough to release it! I tried XJ's version but I dont think its good as Eeveks!

have fun with your new phone Lekky.
I'm also thinking about upgrading from my Desire.
I can't choose between LG Optimus 2X or the SGS2

I've had some bad things with LG in the past but Samsung is quite good on build quality etc.
The only thing I don't like on the SGS2 like you mentioned is that it hasn't got a TEGRA 2 processor. Although I hope they will make one ^^

Time is against me so I need te upgrade fast! (My Desire has some hardware problems lately (random bootloops every day)).

Does LG put their own crappy software on the 2X?

I want my next phone to either be vanilla Android or have a decent ROM community backing by the time I get it.

In UK 18months and 24months contract is a norm. But Ive heard 12months contract is making a comeback too.
Already for years I've had only 12 month contracts in Holland - every year I prolong my contract for another year and get a new phone with it. I'm sorry if people can't make a choice to take such short contracts.
So, I'm soon to upgrade my Desire to another phone. Still searching for the one...

Agree. Thanks to the strong dev community behind Desire, I don't really have to change my phone to get the latest OS or cool ROMs... :)

Ahh you lucky sod! I can get 12months contract but no phone. Its called "sim free" contract you get more minutes and texts bundled in than you would in a contract with a phone.

Hold off if you can.

Nvidia posted in their blog that their "Kal-El" quad core processor is likely going to be shipping in phones as soon as August.

Phones with this SoC will be the next generation of "superphones" :D

I've read about that, but in the coming 2-4 months I'm interested to see HTC Pyramid and SGS2 (with Tegra 2) in action - public acceptance, sales, performance, bugs, processing power, rooting and developer acceptance.

Also, by that time we are going to be treated an Ice Cream by Google together with their next Nexus in line. The question is how much is this Ice cream tapping into dual-core phones' power?

Not only do we get 3 year contracts, but they wont let you upgrade for 24 months, at which point if you want to upgrade, you don't even get new customer pricing on your upgrade, they calculate it based it on your revenue. So for most people, you end up with a figure real close to full price anyways, and then they want you to sign for another 3 years  its ridiculous. I don't even bother with subsidized phones anymore, it sucks.

/rant lol

You sound pretty happy. I look forward to a play and hearing about it. My partner is up for renewal in 3-4 weeks, so i'm hoping the pyramid is out then. I'll get that and she can get the Desire :) Or failing it, she'll just get the Desire S and i'll get something the end of the year.

My experience with LG has been really good. Right now my gf and I have the Desire and the LG Shine Plus. I got the Shine plus in September and got her the Desire for her birthday a little while ago. The Shine plus actually has the better build quality IMO, and nearly stock android. I ended up switching phones with her starting today though, cause she misses the keyboard from her beat up 4 year old LG Rumour, and I was yearning for a higher end phone like hers. Will see how I like it.

My last phone was an lg shine flip phone and it lasted 2.5 years and still going fine, the ex has an lg voyageur that she dropped and beat up all the time, looked ancient but it never acted up. I've seen quite a few LG phones hold up pretty well actually, so hopefully the 2x is the same.

Which is why I'm thinking about moving to Koodo soon, I can buy phones outright and not deal with fricking contracts and being treated like trash (which Telus does to even their long time customers). I know Koodo is part of Telus but they don't do contracts, and the $40 stay social plan looks good.

Telus recently changed their upgrade policy, it used to be $400 cancelation (plus $200 if you cancel on the first year), now it counts $5/10/15 x months remaining ($15 being an iPhone).

In that case then I'm moving to Holland! Technology is moving too fast these days to keep something for longer than a year-year and half now, it's not the same anymore whereas you used to buy a dumbphone back in 1996 and not needing a new one until 2006.

I just heard about the TELUS change yesterday, i actually think that's pretty fair, which is scary lol they must have someting else up their sleeve :P I'm with robbers only because of my retention deal, they certainly don't have any good phones to upgrade anyways.

Sorry to derail the thread lol
