Today I Upgraded From My Desire...

Not to be picky, but who games on a phone really? I just don't see the appeal - battery life gone in an hour? No thanks...

Phone itself does look nice, I'll be waiting for the HTC Pyramid personally

My thoughts exactly. Hoping the conference on the 12th is for the Pyramid release.

The Galaxy SII, for me, is the better phone. As you say teh ram and screen are superior. BUT, having said that, the screen on teh 2X is pretty damn good, I mean it looks like a huge step up compared to the Desire screen (IPS display is very good, actually the same as the iphone4 but lower res).

Do you mean compared to the AMOLED display or the LCD Display on the Desire?

SGS2 has better screen and RAM but is it worth the 100€ extra?
Are you going to notice the extra 512MB RAM?

Still don't know which to choose :(
It's kinda pathetic that I can't make up my mind regarding my next phone :o

I love the build quality of my desire.

Me too. :)

Today I put side by side Desire, SGS and Arc and looked at pure build quality and materials used.
The most solid of the 3 was Desire, although it feels heavy because of the metallic components used. The phone feels good to hold in a hand.
Arc's materials and build quality are good. The phone is very light though for its size! Despite the curved body, the edges are slippery, so I was afraid to drop it all the time.
SGS was also light for its size but the materials all feel plastic. Easy to hold in a hand.

Don't use that as an excuse to hold off, unless you want to hold off until next year... Any quad core cpu won't be in a phone thats actually available on the market this year..

True. "Production in August" doesn't necessarily mean those phones will be released anywhere near that time.

I'm not due an upgrade until April next year though so who knows what'll be out by then :)

I've got a lens scratched to buggery, silver flaking off the buttons and a cracked case (no it hasn't been dropped).

Time for a move away from HTC me thinks,

Compared to my amoled screen, LG IPS screen blows it away. I'll tell you what too, its nice being able to see the phone in daylight :p

I don't know if its worth that much more, gotta be a personal decision. The reason I took my contract is because it worked out at quite a bit over that price difference, too good to pass.

You may, or may not notice the extra ram lol. I would probably say the typical user won't notice it, the advanced user will (because he'll go looking for it :p)

I do have to say tho, the 2X feels better built than my desire, i think mainly because of the metal. But it also could be because my desire is over a year old now :p

The 2X camera is [i dont have a word strong enough, but it should mean much better] than the desire's. You can expect the Galaxy S2 to be just as good maybe better

Wow, i mean i don't really give a sh!t about my phone right now and it's still perfect. The days of treating it like a newborn is over. You must really give it a hard time as i've not got a mark on mine.

i've droped mine loads of times even down 2 sets of stairs one at home and one a set of metal steps at work and still no cracked screen or broken cover thankgod. poped out the plastic lens cover and get good pictures
my old c905i every time i droped it remove battery and reinsert simcard

a friend of mine went to Caprhone Warehouse and they effectively bought out the rest of his contract so he could sign up with them! He got

Lekky, I'm sorry but I guess I'll this time won't go with your decision.
The more I look up about the SGS2, the more I want it :o

Thanks for all the help though! :D

I play some basic stuff, Angry Birds etc to pass the time on my break. I dont think id ever choose a phone with gaming as a priority, if I wanted to play on the move that much then i'd get a PSP/DS.

hah! That is my decision though!

My thought process is, i originally planned to go sim only and buy a phone. But the overall cost of this deal is less than the phone, so i HAD to take it.

I still plan on getting the Galaxy S2, but buying it outright (selling the 2X to fund). If anyone follows me, they know i NEED a 4.3" screen.

That will still work out cheaper for me, because there is now way in hell i could get a galaxy s 2 for free on

The only thing I'm praying for is that the bootloader isn't locked and that XDA devs will go crazy with it :p
The question I'm asking myself is which of the dual-cores will get a better developer support - the one from LG or Samsung or HTC?

My work will give me a new phone at the end of June. I can pick whatever I want. Optimus, SGSII or HTC Pyramid. If the HTC is out by then, I'll probably go with that one.

My next phone will depend on what HTC decide to do with their bootloader. Im hoping they wont lock it cos I got my eyes on the Pyramid!

I know from several sources the Incredible S has a locked bootloader.
Similarly, the HTC thunderbolt in America was locked, but they cracked that already :)

Not heard anything about the desire s yet, but I'm hoping it won't follow suit :(

------------------

I must say though, the decision to do so baffles me. Everything android stands for is belittled by this, its key principle is being "open". HTC of all people should know of the success of their devices, not just with the everyday user but with developers and us "geeks" too. I can see it might not have too much of an impact on sales, as after all most users aren't like us. But, the fact still remains that it will have some impact, albeit marginal.

------------

And, this brings me onto another point (more relevant to the thread this time). My desire, it is in no way perfect I know. But what I hate most is that HTC are not doing what I want them to anymore. Sure, they are correcting its original flaws, with improved battery, internal memory and a better camera etc. But, they have removed my beloved trackpad, removed my adored physical buttons, and now, they are locking up the bootloader. No more custom ROMS? As if android fragmentation wasn't bad enough. Not only did O2 take about a year to even release froyo, it bricked loads of phones that ran the update.

The things that made the desire so good when it was released aren't present in these new phones. Sure, the pyramid may be dual core, but it still has some things I don't like, especially if they lock the bootloader. And now, upgrade time is looming. Normally, you get a much improved phone, with a whole host of new features. I don't want to move away from HTC, but it seems I will have to make sacrifices from my (year old) desire in order to gain these somewhat minor improvements the new line-up offers. HTC, what is going on?

Agree with you William. I love the physical buttons and trackball on my desire aswell. HTC latest offerings dont have them which is a shame. I dont understand the mobile industry these days. First they ignored the fabulous Xenon flash in favour of shitty LED flash. Now they trying to lock the bootloader? What's the logic behind that? Id love to know!
