Root ROOTING For Dummies

I have never flashed sprint lovers but isn't that a pc36img.zip? That can not be flashed in recovery that is flashed in hboot.

Just name it correctly, drop it on the root, boot to bootloader, it'll handle the rest.
 
Yes it is a PC36IMG.zip and thank you for the proper instructions NOT to flash it from RA 2.3, but rather from Hboot. That made all the difference in the world. :) Now to restore my apps and everything, but it seems the ROM flash went great once I did it from HBoot.

Hopefully this helps out someone else down the road!

Last (hopefully) question. Does Sprint Lovers use the default kernel? If so, can/should you update to the kernel to one of Netarchy's More Agressive builds? It seems like Frenchy and others had a lot more battery success with it.

Evan, it likely comes with htc #15 or #17 you can check this in settings/about phone/kernel version.

You may change it to a netarchy kernel. Kernels are a little more complicated and you should read up on them. They can improve phone performance and battery life if the proper one is chosen and used correctly. There are options such as HAVS. less HAVS, more HAVS, suv, uv, no suv, sbc. no sbc, cfs, bfs and there are aosp specific and sense specific kernels...the link in my sig will take you to common kernels and has them separated from aosp to sense however for details on everything else START here...

You may also try to just use set cpu and diasble perflock and underclock your phone when the screen is off, or whenever you want to underclock it. You will not be able to overclock with the stock kernel so dont try, and dont set setcpu at boot till you know its stable or you'll boot loop.

Thanks for all the info!! I do already run SetCPU and it seems to have made a pretty noticable difference. I guess I was trying to fix the trickle charge issue where the battery drops 6-8% as soon as you pull it off the charger, but when I read the feedback on some of these kernels, it seems maybe it's more "voodoo mental" than actual real data demonstrating an actual improvement.

no problem

Eh maybe it has me in a trance then because i swear my first 10 percent drains almost like my second 10 percent...i use sbc kernels...
 
I rooted my friends EVO and it shows s-off but it doesn't let me go into the recovery in order to unroot or flash new rom.
when i select recovery the phone stays on the white HTC EVO 4G screen.

Your phone can fully boot though, right? There may be something wrong with your recovery image, I suggest using Amon RA Recovery anyways, and this is a perfect excuse to start using it ;)! First, go here, and select the appropriate recovery file (Amon RA 2.3). Follow these instructions exactly:

1) Download the appropriate PC36IMG.zip for whichever recovery image you want.
2) Rename the file to PC36IMG.zip, exactly, being careful to not rename it to PC36IMG.zip.zip or accidentally unzip the file.
3) Copy the file to the root of your sdcard (That mean the top level, not in any folders).
4) Boot into hboot by turning the phone off, then turning it back on while pressing and holding the volume down button.
5) Flash the file when prompted.
6) When done, rename or remove the PC36IMG.zip file, or it will prompt you to flash it again every time you boot back into hboot.

This should get you into recovery.

Hello fellow Android fans. This is my first post, and I have to say that I am a reformed BlackBerry user.

I purchased an Android Tablet from China ($200 and very nice) I was then hooked. I stopped waiting for the BlackBerry curve (Sprint) and bought the HTC EVO 4G. Never to go back to BB!

It sounds like Kooolaid Rooted a newer EVO, I have been reading about rooting now for over a week.

Questions:

1. Does the unrevoked3 still work well for a newer EVO? I have seen mixed reviews on other forums. One talked about bricking the device. It seems like on this board it works well, some folks had to run it 3 times.

2. Still not clear on what gets wiped. It is just downloaded apps and contact info?

I only want to ROOT to get WiFi at this point.

Welcome to the android world! Now get ready to unlock the potential in your Evo. We all started for similar reasons.....most were because of free wifi tether and removing sprint bloatware. I would suggest reading the Rooting for Dummies guide through a couple times. I personally have rooted 6 or 7 Evos and had no issues at all. There are many more successes than there are problems. I have yet to see Unrevoked "brick" a phone. It has had issues finishing the process on occassion but as long as it gets through unlocking nand(s-off), the rest can be done manually if necessary. As to your second question, the only time anything would get wiped is if you were flashing another rom/kernel/theme. During the unrevoked process nand is unlocked, a custom recovery is flashed, and your stock rom is rooted to allow you to use root only apps like "Wifi Tether for Root Users". If you have any issues or other questions, feel free to ask. We are here to help.

Xtremedays, I went through the guide, read it a few times. Wonderful work, very clear. I am working my way through step by step.

I was reading the section on security and the point about keeping the device updated. Once I root I will not be able to take any updates from my carrier unless I first unroot, apply the updates, then root again. Is that correct?

Once you're rooted, you cannot accept OTA updates from Sprint...You'll lose root and have to wait until there is another root exploit available for that update. Cool thing about being rooted is, that all you'll have to do is flash a ROM that has those updates included, and more than likely we'll have those updates available to us earlier than it is officially released.
 
I am getting the evo today. I have had the epic since last sept. and it is time to give that to my daughter and get something better. I never use the keyboard anyway. I rooted that phone with no problems, just wondering if it is just as easy with the evo? I have read a lot about it and watched some videos on youtube. do the new evo's root without any problems? like surfthru, I just want to use the wifi tether. thanks in advance.

Dude, you and the rest of the guys on here are AWESOME!!! just rooted my phone I read what you told me too, and the whole thing took no longer than 5 minutes. thanks for all of your help....:D:D:D:D now off to do my wifes phone.

I was following the instructions to load the HBOOT driver. I never see the failed Adroid 1.0 driver per the instructions on unrevoked.com.

What does install is the Adnroid ADB Interface (see image attached).

Just for the heck of it I stared up unrevoked3 and it found my phone.

So is the Android HBOOT driver really required?

Did you have HTC Sync installed at some point? My computer found and installed drivers for my phone the first time I plugged them in. I manually installed the drivers listed in the Rooting Guide just so there were no issues. Mine listed it as the Android Composite ADB Interface with my phone plugged in as I type this. If it found your phone, you should be good to go.

Welcome to the forum! You are rooted I'm assuming? Congrats if you are! Once rooted, there are tons of things you can do....You can download root only apps, flash kernels, and flash custom ROM's. I suggest you give the "After Rooting" section a read in "ROOTING For Dummies + Extra's" Also you can find every ROM/Kernel available here.
