Root Droid X OFFICIAL Gingerbread on May 10 ?

Doesn't matter anyway... least for a while... we a rooted leak... it will take a while for someone to root the OTA gingerbread, unless we can do what we did to go to Froyo and copy su over to xbin... but something tells me its not gonna be that easy... :)

I agree, I think the best bet to getting the OTA rooted is not taking the OTA from Verizon and waiting for a version of the OTA to be rooted and then be able to install that. Something just tells me there will be a new bootloader with the OTA and it will me near impossible to root the OTA if you take it there will not be a way to go back and take a rooted version.

That and it looks like a few Roms for the GB Leak should be dropping very soon!

I'm thinking they're saving the best ROMs for the OTA version as that's the one the majority of people will end up on anyway. But I'm happy waiting until everything is sorted out myself.

Here's my thinking. I would like to know if the OTA is sbf'able back to .340. If so, I'll take the OTA (so that VZW has me as having taken it.), then sbf back to .340, then restore gb rooted and modded.

If the latest we have now is the OTA, then yeah it will be sbf'able obviously :p, but if what we have is not the OTA, then most likely we will see a new bootloader with changed keys and we won't be able to sbf........unless we have the sbf for that :D

Anybody else's head feel like its full of wallpaper paste this week? Dayum, lotsa choices to make...

This thread just reminded me of a question I forgot to ask. How do I stop my phone from taking the ota when it is finally released to the masses

Simply rename something in the system files... like updater.apk to updater.bak... (be running a ROM will cause it to fail easily) it will download the OTA but fail because the files are off. I'm just gonna debloat some of Gingerbread leak and it will fail the OTA.

Boy did I learn from my Eris NOT to take the OTA right away. I feel certain, regardless of what's thrown out there, that we will see root pretty quickly. But I won't budge from the leak until that happens. The leak that I'm on is honestly stable enough that I could have it on my phone the rest of it's life and be content.

Just out of curiosity, why is it important that VZW have you on record as taking it?

Incidentally, I doubt they track upgrade status. Very few tracking systems actually care about upgrades (since you could attempt the upgrade and fail many times), they monitor active user bases. So you're already in VZW's system as running Gingerbread - if they monitor such things.

This stems from P3Droid's post that told everybody to turn or burn. I don't know if people inferred or if he said this, but the gist was that VZW tracks whether a phone is rooted or not by seeing who took the OTA or not. I don't want to dig up that post to find out and I'm honestly not concerned either way.

Of course it ignores how some people are never given update messages. A friend of mine had to do a manual check after not getting a notification for a month. I saw someone post here a couple weeks back about getting an update notification and it was for the update most of us got back in December.

I kept track of all the drama, and P3's indication seemed to be that Moto has built tracking tools into the kernel. That means it doesn't matter whether you accept the OTA or not, the kernel has the capacity to determine root and tethering status.

I would be very surprised if VZW dumped any money into a tracking system based on whether you accepted the OTA. It would be a poor tool indeed, especially when they have this nicely locked down kernel that would be so easy to implement real, valuable tracking methods into.

But then... I don't know anything more than the rest of you. Just worked with R&D in some organizations, and getting management to spend money on projects is hard enough without the proposals being for half-assed tools that don't provide good information :D

Here's my take on the GB release from VZ.
Now, keep in mind, I am not drunk or on drugs. :) Just having a good day and in a positive mood.
I think the upcoming GB update from big red will have a newer kernel and bootloader, and, it's totally gonna be un- wait for it -locked! Hell yes! The phone is end of life almost anyway. A good amount of people have already upgraded to tbolt or some other device. Why would they care at that point right? ...right? {{crickets}}
Well, this is what I am going with for now. So, don't be bustin my bubble and tell me it aint gonna happen, ok? :D

Rock on brothers and sisters!

It already is end of life, I believe end of life date was 3/31/11.

I thought that you would probably have followed that ordeal. Anyway, I am with you. It is utterly simple for Verizon to implement a phone home feature when you are on their network. How hard would it be for them to simply have your system info sent? Checking to see who took the update as a measure of root seems archaic and unreliable.

I understand your logic. You think that by taking the most recent OTA verizon won't assume your a modder because they assume modders don't get the most recent OTA, correct?

Well here is the problem with that logic. I have about 6 friends with android phones still on 2.1 because they are so clueless, or don't care either one. But basically I have a couple friends who have updated, and the majority is still on an old OS. So basically what I am saying is I imagine there are thousands and thousands of people who have no clue they are not on the newest OS, and thus would be in verizon's "watch list".

So if that truly is one of verizons methods to watching people it will be an epic failure.

Bravo. Well stated.

I was just in a VZW store trying to convince my girlfriend to upgrade to the Droid2 Global (she wants a keyboard) and when I brought up the end of life thing the people that worked there pretty much had no clue what I was talking about, and when I mentioned that the X reached EOL on 3.31 they laughed at me and said no it didn't. I wanted to punch them in the face. I just wish that I could talk to a Verizon employee, be it in the store or on the phone, that knew more than me for once. They are the most useless reps out there. I go to an autoparts store and get plenty of good information, I go to VZW store and get laughed at cause they don't know what I'm talking about. I swear they all just work there for free ipad/iphones and free voice plans...
