3dEvo: Pre-release miscellany

In my opinion the casual buyers don't really follow the upcoming products once they have made their purchase. If they have a Nexus thats the phone they are keeping for 2 years. You have to consider ppl on forums make up a small percentage of total buyers, others dont really care. My wife only looks at phones when she's ready to replace her current one and she picks based on form and color. So having another phone that comes out 3 weeks after theirs makes no difference.

These are probably common knowledge, but I haven't seen anyone mention them:

You can get the same trade in allowance that RS offers at Sprint Corporate store.

The RS trade in does not necessarily need to be tied to a new purchase. You can trade any device at any time for a gift card. But, if you hold your old evo too long, the trade in price may be lower.

If Sprint is pushing the Nexus like crazy now (5/23) that means that people who buy it now have until 6/23 to decide if they want an E3D.

More than likely, most people who got the Nexus are likely to be happy with the Nexus, unless they have technical problems. It's still shiny/new.

I like a previous poster's theory of Sprint having to wait XX amount of days between a phone releasing and a phone release date announcement. I'd actually like to put an addendum to that. It doesn't make any business sense to do that, anyways. While I don't think the E3D necessarily makes the Nexus obsolete, it certainly could be seen as counter-productive to release a phone and then immediately release something that could be seen as better immediately after it. Sprint invests money into the phone R/D. That'd be like throwing away money. So, instead of letting the Nexus be overshadowed by E3D, they're doing a media blitz to try to promote the underdog, then rolling out their heavy hitter in a sudden fury.

And maybe they're also taking a page out of Apple's playbook. No, not the play where you say the users are holding it wrong, but keeping hush-hush about it and then suddenly say...here it is!

I think you're right about the media blitz. It sounds like they're really pushing the Nexus in KC and there were like 5 twitter posts about it today from the normally quiet Sprint Twitter. I hope you're right about the Evo 3D getting an Apple-esque launch, that would mean that I don't need to fret about not hearing an announcement yet.

Now that I think about it that actually makes sense. Dropping it as a bombshell would really make waves and it would quickly sell based on namesake alone.

This: HTC EVO 3D and EVO View 4G shipped RUUs leaked is also encouraging news that points to an earlier release date.

Come to think of it, the evo 4g is more than popular enough that a simple price drop would be more than enough for them to fly through remaining stock, so the fact that they actively continue to support it with gingerbread means to me that they believe that the evo 4g has plenty of life left in it. So I think once the evo 3d is released the evo will drop to $99 and will continue to sell well into the end of the year and maybe into 2012.

There doesn't seem to be any shortage of new phones coming out so my bet is they let bb/rs sell evos for cheap until they are gone. i was slightly amazed to see the epic for free at bb this week. once the 3d drops nobody is going to want an evo.

Thats true but an evo 4G at $99 is a pretty good deal for the casual person but like earlymon said they will probably just introduce an "EVO Lite" thats a little smaller and cheaper than the E3D with newer hardware than the evo 4g to capture sales of those that don't want to spend $199 on an E3D. That would be kinda funny if they called it evo lite.

lol. well the hero 4g may or may not be coming (kingdom).

So far as I recall, the only thing the Kingdom was missing compared to the Evo was the smaller screen at 4" but qHD (and missing an HDMI/MHL port??). So, I'm also interested if they'll keep the Evo name or resurrect the Hero - the Kingdom is a step up from the Shift, but that doesn't mean anything... so - with a faster processor (in capability and clock), I dunno about Evo Lite. :)

I lol'd at "Evo Lite" :-p

Like themuffinman, I'm at least hoping for something around Wed. with Oprah's show. I spoke with 2 sprint stores today regarding preorders, and one told me they thought it'd release 2nd weekend of June, the other even mentioned the Oprah event and Nascar coverage, and said they thought it'd be out first or second week.

At this point, even if it's going to be a bit longer than that, I just want to know. So much bad information out there, and my guess is that neither of those stores actually "knew" anything, they're just simply guessing like the rest of us.

Yeah, at this point i'm more frustrated with the lack of information from Sprint more than the actual phone in my hand.

Agreed. If I knew when it was being released and how much it would cost, I could set aside my money and wait instead of trying every day to find more info about it. At this point, I'm likely to get so excited about the phone that I elevate it to some sort of god status. Then I'll get the phone and be so disappointed that it wasn't really worth getting THAT excited over, ya know?

I think the "Kingdom" will be a Great option for sprint, like the EVO Shift is now to the EVO 4G. I'm not sure about "EVO Lite" myself. I think that they should give it the EVO badge, as its certainly worthy... in an attempt to expand the EVO's awesome line of phones. Maybe the EVO Hero. /s

It's worse than just a lack of information, it's the abundance of wild guesses and misleading everyone. We can't even get Sprint and all the retail stores at least be able to say " Within the first half of June" or something similar in unison.

I went to Best Buy today to pre-order the phone. The manager there was pretty friendly. After telling me I was the 3rD person today to pre-order the phone, he told me his "Sprint contact" told him the phone is scheduled to be released at the end of July or beginning of August. Really now???

The reason for this apparently is that the Nexus S 4G is selling so well that they don't want to bring a new phone out and decrease the sales.

Heh. If I have to wait another 2-2.5 months for this, I'll wait an additional four months for when the quad cores are expected to be marketed.

I did it with the Verizon/Thunderbolt IE first pics August, release March. I can do it again. I don't think I will have to, but I'm up for the challenge.

I think EVO 2.5D sounds better :p

Perhaps the FCC is what is holding it up?

That's a good question. I'm also wondering if the hardware supply shortage that is impacting Apple (forced them to delay their iPhone until September) has any impact either? Could also be software related, they could by trying to include the most up to date versions of Android and Sense, and they need to make sure it isn't a buggy release. Or as someone else said, it could be Sprint toying around with us trying to drum up customers for the Nexus S and trying to get as many ppl to buy that before they muddy the waters and announce the Evo3D.

Honestly, there are just so many unknowns we'll never know until someone eventually leaks the info, or they officially release the date. Seeing how tight-lipped it's been thus far, I don't anticipate any date leaking in advance.

Saying "Summer" does give them flexibility in case things are holding the release up, however I don't see them releasing it any later then July at the LATEST. Beyond that and they limit their opportunity to steal more customers away from Att/Tmobile and to further challenge the new iPhone.

I made a desk stand for my phone out of a piece of cardboard and some sticky tape!

I saw on the Phandroid news page that Evo 3D will have a locked bootloader, so no rooting. I wonder why HTC have implemented this?

The rooting of the Desire, for instance, isn't doing anyone any harm, it's no worse than taking a Vista laptop and installing Ubuntu. I've never read of a booted phone being able to do "illegal" stuff that the handset maker didn't intend. Not that I've ever rooted, I'm keen to try it out though.

Well there were no evo3ds at the all star race this weekend in our luxury box...but tons of branding everywhere for it. Should be interesting what they roll out for the Coca - Cola 600.

I've pointed to your moved (and edited by me) post - maybe see my reply and then also that whole thread.

Is the MPAA behind all of this? Srsly.

OK, so here's my take. Sprint just said coming this summer, which is about 3 months long (9 if you live in Texas) so that gives them a lot of ground to play with. First saw the Evo "sign up for updates" page in I believe it was March (maybe April) so by that reckoning I would expect a July or August release.

I hope I am dreadfully wrong...

Fellow SA native here...
3 months? try 3/4 of the year, minus an occasional freak ice storm.
