Flash away friend. Also most roms you flash have the bloatware removed so if you are flashing on dont even bother removing bloat...

So...I freaked out that I ruined something (even worried I may have bricked my phone) when I did all of the above stuff earlier today, so I un-rooted using the RUU method. I am now back to stock and I feel a bit better that I know my phone will be in good working order for now. I would eventually like to re-root again using another method that doesn't require me to install all kinds of other apps to do many of the different processes. If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them.
 
awe man you should have stayed rooted. it is really super super hard to brick your phone. i know that there are warnings all over the place about bricking it, but that is just people just covering the asses. there are always a way to fix things. this forum here is awesome and there are some great and knowledgeable people here who can help if you need it. i would say root again. the advantages for being rooted far out weighs you bricking your phone. at least now you also know how to unroot your phone. if you can do that with no problems then you should have no issues rooting and flashing.
 
So I did the whole power button & vol. down button and when the white screen pops up it still says "S-OFF". Does this mean I am still rooted or did I screw something else up?

If you didn't flash the s on tool you are still rooted. At least partially. Flashing the ruu restored all your partitions to default but security is still off so you just need to flash a recovery and then a rooted rom and you are good to go again

How is the S-ON tool flashed?
 
So am I in limbo right now with S-OFF? Does it hurt to stay this way or should I go through a specific process to get back to S-ON?
 
since you still have s-off, just install a custom recovery. use this one PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip. this will give you amon ra (i would strongly recomend this one) as your recovery. you can get others from ref #1 of my sig.
1.download it and rename it. just erase the "_RA_2.3" part in the name. you just do not want to name it PC36IMG.zip.zip as windows hides extensions.
2.transfer the file over to the root(no folder) of your sd card
3.go to hboot (power off then press and hold power+vol down)
4. hboot will scan and ask you if you want to update, select yes.

you should be good to go

now you can either unroot(i would not recommend it) or keep it rooted and flash a custom rom.

O.K. I will give this a try in the morning, I am burnt out for today. I will reply back tomorrow and let you know how it goes. Thanks for all your help!

O.K. I followed all of your instructions and it worked just fine. Now I am just trying to figure out what all that exactly did to my phone or what state my phone is in. Am I stick in stock mode? Am I still rooted? What should I do from here? These are all the questions I am asking myself.

ok so it looks like you are still rooted. being s-off. everything looks good. i would rename the PC36IMG or delete it though or it will continually scan and ask to update it. did you verify in terminal emulator that you have root access by typing su? if so then you are still rooted. also i would now make a nandroid backup as your previous one is from clockwork mod and will not work with amon ra. nandroid backups are your friend.

O.K. so this is what I get when I run Terminal Emulator:

export PATH=/data/local/bin:$PATH
$ $su
SU: permission denied

So I am assuming I am not longer rooted. Is there anyway to get the S-OFF back to S-ON at this point or should I not even bother trying? What would be the benefit of having S-OFF or S-ON at this point?

I have also deleted the PC36IMG from my SD card. What exactly did that do when I installed that earlier?

Im pretty sure you just flashed a custom recovery, you are almost rooted again except you have an unrooted rom is what i believe is going on. Please verify you have clockwork mod recovery or amon ra recovery by going to hboot and selecting recovery and let me know what happens. If you do we can go ahead and flash the s-on tool THEN run the ruu in the proper order this time

Yup you are almost rooted again. You have s-off and a custom recovery (amon ra 2.3) but an unrooted rom. WHich way would you like to go? Unroot or root we can go either way from this point.

Well a few things firsts...Am I in a pretty stable condition from the looks of everything as it stands?

I would like to root so I can have some control, but I like the look of the stock phone (ie: themes, icons, wallpapers) and if I do root I would like to stay as close as possible to that look and feel. I do want to get rid of all the Sprint bloatware, I do want to get passed the 30fps cap (another whole set of questions on that) and I would like to do what ever over/under clocking needs to be done to get longer battery life.

The other thing is would it be smart rooting at this point and me not really knowing the steps that got me to this point. That was my whole idea of un-rooting and starting from scratch with the factory setup.

Is the current state pretty much the process of rooting the "old-fashioned" way without all that unrEVOked3 stuff? If so I like the idea of being able to do it that way without having to download all kinds of apps and different things that are involved with that process.

So I guess in the end I really want to be rooted. My other problem is I need to do this whole process to my wife's identical phone...that I haven't even touched yet (still in the factory setup like when I bought it). So I would like to complete that process as painlessly as possible...and not the unrEVOked3 way.

Oh the other thing is should I delete that folder I told you about in the earlier post for clockworkmod that is on my SD card?

I am so sorry to have said so much, I feel like I am a real pain in the neck asking you all these questions, but I don't know any other place to go and I really do appreciate all the help you have given me.

just didnt want ta leave ya hangin...

in short you are stable, just need to flash the stock odexed rom that is rooted, its simple and you will be done.

Unrevoked3 is the easiest way :), if you dont like it try looking into autoroot over on xda...?

that file isnt 100 percent useful but i would throw it on the laptop and take it off the card if ya want to get rid of it, i wouldnt nix it completely

30fps cap was done away with long ago, unless you have an old evo with original software...?

Can only underclock on stock kernal, if you want to overclock you need to flash a custom kernel.

I'll elaborate later...
 
Well the sticky has I believe the best UN rooting method. Biggest Reason being because every one here is familiar with it and can help u along.... u need not install and apps on your phone however u do need to get the driver on your PC.. then u will be a click away from being rooted.. then after the first your wifes will be done start to finish 5 min. Cause you will already have the drivers
