Truthfully with the snail pace of Samsung regarding its support, I will never buy another Samsung smart phone. 2.2 JUST came out for their existing line-up. The GPS issue was bad enough.
I have to agree regarding the current crop of verizon phones. None of them are better enough over the DX to be worthy of purchase. They all have somethings that end up being major dealbreakers for me. The Tbolt is a thick phone and the 4.3 inch/1.67 ratio makes it look fat IMO. The Charge looks even more bloated. It's also made of really cheap looking plastic and is quite a rip off.
I thought that might change with the DX2. I went to a verizon store to check one out. Even though my contract isn't up until next year, I was considering buying the phone outright. $450 for a dual core phone with qHD resolution on top of everything I already love about my current DX seemed like a reasonable price. Plus, I'd be able to give my DX to my wife, allowing me to save her upgrade and use it when a really killer phone came out.
But I was so disappointed with the DX2. Forget about the hardware or build quality or anything like that. You won't even consider such things once you take a look at the screen. It looks terrible. Everything is so pixelated. I took out my DX to compare screens and it wasn't even close. The DX looked much sharper with better shadowing and shading. As a result, it actually looked like the higher res phone to me. I'm a very visual person so this is a major deal breaker for me. Very, very disappointing.
The only phone launched this year that I would even consider trading the DX for might be the Incredible2. It's the only phone with a display that looks as good (perhaps even a little better) than the DX in IMO. I was also very impressed with the form factor and build quality. It one sexy little phone.
I'll eventually get a new phone this year. Perhaps the SGS2 if and when it comes to verizon. But I'm very happy with my DX. Seeing these other phones in action only served to make me appreciate just how great this phone is. It's gonna be hard parting with it when I finally do upgrade. And I don't think I'll ever sell it. The DX is my first smartphone -- a product that has transformed the way I communicate and digest the world. For that, it will always have a special place in my heart.

Hopefully an X3 comes out. I love the screen too much to ever go smaller again.

Actually, with the news that HTC is no going with unlocked bootloaders I an going to have to move to them.

I won't be moving away from my Droid X until December 2012, so there is no sense in trying to identify a particular phone model that I will be moving to since there's no telling what will be on the market by then. It would be more productive to talk about what features I hope to see in my future handset.
Ideally, I would like to see Motorola develop a "Droid X3" that would maintain the same physical form factor as the Droid X. This way I can continue to use the same multimedia/car dashboard docks that I have currently have.
Hopefully, by Christmas 2012, we'll be seing phones running 1.2 to 1.5 Ghz dual core processors. The Droid X and the Droid X2 both have 512MB of Ram. Hopefully my fictional Droid X3 will come with 1024MB.
A front facing camera would be a nice touch along with 4G LTE connectivity. I live and work in Alabama so it's not like I'll be among the first to see expansive 4G networks so 4G isn't as big of a deal for me as it might be for some of you living in more metropolitan areas.
They can keep the on-board storage at 8GB, but I'd like to see support for the new 64GB micro SDHC cards coming out.
USB Host Mode (USB OTG) would be great also... expecially if it can support USB Mass Storage devices. Atrix-style laptop/desktop docks would be a nice touch also.
I'd also like to see better support for Bluetooth pointing devices. Especially some kind of remote for when my device is connected via HDMI to my television.
I would also like to see a lot more of my data move out to the cloud. I use a weight-loss tracking app that I have to update on both my Droid X and my Motorola Xoom seperately in order to keep them in sync. Hopefully, Google's foray into Cloud storage with Google Music will expand to allow us to sync specified folders from our sdcard partitions up to the network automagically.
All a bunch of wishfull thinking, but nothing here couldn't be accomplished by December 2012.

Jaiotu - 2012 is a LONG ways off... you have much more patience than I do. For now, there really isn't a phone on Verizon that is quite worth upgrading to IMHO. DX2 is the closest, but it's got a lot of release bugs, and isn't THAT much better than our DX1's honestly. I'm hoping the GB OTA (once rooted) will be enough refresh of the phone til something truly worthy of upgrading to hits verizon.... like the SGS2 or Targa/Bionic possibly. For me, dual core, nicer 4.3" display, upgraded camera, FF camera and 4G are all things I am looking for in my next phone be it Motorola, Samsung, or whatever. Right now the SGS2 looks to be the best looking future phone that may possibly hit Verizon in a few months. But who knows. Til I see one of these phones operating in person, it is really hard to tell for sure what I end up with.
My next phone hasn't been announced yet. It might not even be on the drawing board. I'm not being especially patient, just practical. I want my next phone to be 4G, but my area won't get 4G service until the 2nd or 3rd quarter of 2012. My current contract runs til July of 2012, so I'll wait to see what the hottest phones are then. There will probably be quad core phones hitting the streets and I can sit back and chuckle at everyone who is upgrading right now while they complain about how they still have a year on their contract..... ;-)

It's mostly here already. The Galaxy S II is 1.2ghz dual core, FFC, 4G, 1gb memory and USB OTG.

I can see how it's plausible to wait until end of 2012...even if it seems like an eternity in the tech world lol
Right now it's looking like SGS2 since the bootloader is not locked and the form factor is not bad at all.
I was also considering "Targa" but for now that is just a speculative piece of technology.
Either way, an unlocked bootloader is a MUST for my next phone.

You're right...lol. Thats one reason why its still on my wish list for this year. Will it be 4G, LTE for Verizon tho... With AT&T doing LTE, there would be no real incentive for me to stay on Verizon except the possibility of unlimited data plans. Would it be LTE or HSPA-whatever on AT&T.

I just cant stand the sh*tty quality and feel of these phones, I love the fit & finish of the iphone. I hate how buggy the android system is as well. I never ONCE had to reset my ipod touch cause it was frozen, I have had to do it MULTIPLE times on this POS android/windows bull. Laggy at times (I dont even have much of anything on my phone) just is typical Windows crap

I love it. So many people think iOS is so polished. ha
Anyway, I think most of us are in agreement that not much is better then our Droid X right now. The Galaxy S2 is a gorgeous phone, with power out the @$$, but the plasticness of it is a turn off.
Someone please make a phone with the power of the Galaxy S2, the build quality of Motorola, and the unlocked bootloaders of HTC(or Samsung)
I really wish Nokia could make a few Android phones, their hardware is awesome

I have no idea what my next phone will be, since it isn't out yet. I have over a year until my contract ends, and nothing currently available is better enough than my DX to make me wish my contract was up sooner. Probably nothing with a 3D display, at least. My eyes must be getting old, but when I play with a Nintendo 3Ds for a few minutes, it makes my eyes hurt, even on a low 3D setting. And I won't have 4G in my area for a while, so no big rush for me.

I think the reason you have so few responses thus far is because most of us DX users don't see a compelling reason to switch yet. I know I don't.

I'm on a 1 year contract which expires in July so I'm up for an upgrade. No more 1 year contracts so I'm trying to decide whether to buy the Droid Charge at full price or to upgrade and buy the SGS2 or Bionic at full price
for you id say get the charge full retail since its cheaper than the other 4g phones, and then use your upgrade for the bionic or SGS2 since those will most likely be more expensive

my X is as solid as any iPhone i've ever used...i think iOS is the overall more polished experience sure...but i know plenty of iPhone users who have had nothing but problems with their devices...
and don't even start about when you get the run around from AT&T when your phone has problems and they tell you there is nothing they can do for you you have to find an Apple Store
i LOVE the iPhone...i love Apple products in general...but don't think that you can just jump to the iPhone and expect that all hardware/software bugs will just disappear...

That makes sense but I'd like to grandfather my current data rate. So I think it makes sense to use my upgrade now before the tiered plans take effect (I know some people don't care; I'm not looking to have that discussion).

unfortunately I don't have an upgrade until 2012. So I will be sticking around here in the OGX forums until then! When that time comes I expect some siiiick new phones will be out ready to be taken advantage of.

How about instead of flat out bashing Android, you post your issues in a thread and see if they can be solved. None of my Android phones have ever been buggy on stock firmware. Roms are a different story.
iOS is worked on by developers who work on Mac OS which has been around for how many years? Compared to Apple, Android is STILL an infant. And just a fyi, Android and Windows are quite different. Putting the two in the same category just shows your ignorance.
If you are not happy with your android phone either ASK how it can be made better, OR simply leave AF without badmouthing Android. People here enjoy the operating system and have the phones for a reason
