Root Simple update to GB 602

Here's how I upgraded from rooted GB 596 to the GB 602 and retained my data.

Obviously your mileage may differ. This assumes you are rooted and on a rom based on the stock rom. Not CM7, OMGB, OMFGB, MIUI, etc. Users of non GB roms should not restore data, unless they're prepared to take the risk.

Not rooted? (stock GB) You can't make the recovery or Titanium backups and can't restore data, b/c you don't have root. You can still use this guide to upgrade, but just the first section. You will lose data, but your apps can be downloaded in Market.

Running some other rom? (not on a GB-based 596 rom) You probably shouldn't restore data (second part of this guide), but can still use this guide.

• Copy z4root and d2bootstrap to sdcard. Google them and download them if you don

The TBH App says to install the AIO 2.3.340 SBF file in recovery then without leaving recovery install the 4.5.602 AIO.

Is that basically what the OP is saying in less words

I tried that and it didn't work. I also didn't format data/system in between installs either, so that might be the problem. However, I also don't feel like retrying it right now.

i doubt anything from this update will get pushed into CM7 except for maybe the radio update...

CM7 is not based on the Blur builds that Motorola makes in any way...

Install 602 AIO

I am in the process of making a backup and going to try and load either Liberty or DSX over top and just restore data but was looking for someone that has already done it and a working method.

FYI, if you're on stock rooted odexed .596 then you can simply take the OTA update and you will keep root. I've moved on to the D3 but the DX that I gave to my wife took the update while still being rooted. I verified by doing a D2 bootstrap recovery and I didn't get any sort of error message.

Scared to try this. For me, it probably would take more time to get back to stock anymore. I have a lot to unfreeze and have to restore swype and probably a couple of other things.

I'd like some more confirmation that this will work.

Tried this.....I could manually do the download (never had a notice that there was one) and everything would look good until the phone rebooted, then the install would fail about 1/4 of the way through. It has had no ill effects on my 596 deoxed root. I tried it again just to see, same thing, 2 fails. At this point after reading the official Motorola Droid X forums ( I usually stay off there lol) it doesn't really seem that I am missing much by not doing the update. Unless an easier way comes out, I am not going to bother.

what's so good about .602??? faster 3G??? naaaaa unless something really major got updated then I will do the update but so far with the ROM suhi my phone is running Fantastic!!!

Colchiro's instructions work perfectly. The one question that I have is that I browsed around a bit with 602 before restoring my data only from 596 backup just to see what was different. Then I restored. I can't recall exactly, but it may be that some of the 'newer' menus are not retained when data restoring. For example, when I was in settings...sound, I swear that I remembered an option to get a notification tone when battery charging was complete. That option doesn't appear anymore in my restored version. Do you guys notice anything 'old' about the new install after doing a 'data only' restore? It's got me thinking that it may be worth it to do a clean installation of all my apps again from 602 fresh. But, before I go through the effort, I just want to ensure that I'm not misremembering something.

Yes I did verify. Under "about phone" it shows .602 and the .13p baseband. And like I said earlier, I was able to bootstrap afterwards as well, which told me that I maintained root.

Just to be perfectly clear, I wanted my wife to have a mostly stock experience so before I gave my X to her I SBFed, and installed TBH's two-part rooted odexed .596. I did NOT freeze or remove any apps. Nor did I install or run any apps that require root except z4root and D2 bootstrapper (to install .596). Then when she received the software update message, a few days later I figured, what the heck, so what if she loses root, it not my phone anymore I was a little surprised that it worked but it did.

I'm sorry that this has not worked out for some of you but I figured the worst that could happen was that the install would not take. If my advice ended up forcing some of you to SBF, I'm truly sorry.

If you guys are still having issues installing .602, then try this:

Official Gingerbread update 4.5.602 (rooted and ready) or Stock.

No problem. I was planning to SBF so that I could get 602 anyway. Just figured I'd try the OTA first since it is easier.

Same thing here, you lose root. So I SBF'ed back to .340 and it still had the .13 radio. FYI. I did not stay there long went ahead and updated with TBH .602 and all is well seems to have fixed my issue of the data/cell service dropping out and having to reboot to get it back.
